Okay. Seriously, now.
I was just pokin' fun at that. It seems that Hrud are one of the biggest topics on the net to annoy or excite people. There seem to be few "fence riders" on them. So, I thought it would be amusing to bring them into the conversation, since everybody is talking a bunch of sh** anyway.

this is all conjecture because there is no specific answer.

Tthe CLOSEST we get to an answer from the codex is where is states that it is HYPOTHESIZED that snotlings used to be brainboys but devolved (not a direct quote).

The only thing it specifies is that nobody knows.

I remeber reading an article in the old Armageddon codex about Orkimedes, the ork behind all of the attacks on Armageddon

“Battle Brother Maynard, bring forth The Holy Orb of Antioch!”
Book of Armaments (Chapter 2, verses 9-21)

You got to look at the newest Codex first an foremost to see where GW is going with it. Fluff changes easily depending on the whims of those who write it. You can't go back to the original codexes and treat them as canonical scripture.

If I was GW I'd keep my options open.

Brainboys a dead and extinct race = boring

Brainboys as a race that could one day come back = fun

Brainboys as some hidden race that will one day wake up again = Necron 2.0

Brianboys = Slann = gay

Brainboys as an terrorized and enslaved race that could one day rise up against their overlords = Waaghh!1one

Snotlings as the Brainboys seems to be the best option. The Snotlings are are described as childlike, and none are recorded to have lived past the age of 9 (they are killed off one way or another). They are simply children imo. Baby brainboys terrorized from a young age and never allowed to mature (physically and intellectually). What would happen if they were allowed grow in an environment that would nuture them physically and intellectually? And how would they look? I think it would be cool if they were cross between an Ork and gretchin physically. This could spin off into a more civilized ork sub army. A counter to the orks, like the dark eldars ... but gooda.

Just because I love you Malfred.

Excerpt from page 6 of Waaargh the Orks! (my apologies for any words I screw up, I'm typing this quickly):

Imperial scholars have speculated that on the Ork world of origin (wherever that might have been), there existed an ancient race that was indirectly responsible for the spread of Orkish society. Difficult as it is to believe, this ancient race was extremely intelligent, and rose to dominance over the other Orkish races in just a few generations. They understood and developed technology and even created the legendary (and summarily lost) Ork Standard Construct Templates. It was this race, historians argue, that must have initiated the Ork expansion into space.

Now a physically underdeveloped slave race, the Snotlings are thought to be the only living remnant of this lost race. The sudden rise of super-intelligent Songtlings can only be explained as the result of a catalyst. Snotlings are symbiotic with fungi, which they cultivate and eat. It is believed that these fungi gre in the underground cave-systems of Orkoid culture and caused genetic mutation in the brains of these ancient Snotlings. The Snotlings raised the fungi for food. Over generations, a diet of this fungi stimulated the growth of the Snotling brain to its full potential. Later, the fungi was cultivated by the mentally enhanced Snotlings.

According to legend, the intelligent lost race of Snotlings, known as the Brainboyz, were still diminutive, so they bred a race of less-intelligent, but tougher, larger and more brutal creatures to do their work and fight their wars. These were the Orks and Gretchin.

Gretchin probably represent an intermediate stage in the development of Orks. The Orks were put to work cultivating the fungi. Unfortunately for the ancient Snotlings, the Orks also nibbled at the raw fungi as they collected it. Their masters took no notcie, unaware that their own intelligence was the result of this peculiar diet. Over a few generations, the Ork brain was enhanced enough for the Orks to rise up and overthrow their masters.

The Brainboyz were enslaved and allowed only a small amount of fungi. Slowly, the began to regress to a juvenile level of mentality (even by Orkish standards). However, the Orks neglected the cultivation of the fungi, and eventually it died out. As the fungi became less abundant, the Orks also began to regress. By this time, the greatest advances in Ork technology, culture, and expansion into space had already taken place. Gradually, the Orks reverted back to a lesser mental capacity that was nevertheless superior to the original state of the Brainboyz (thus, they remained dominant). This is the situation that persists to this day. It is difficult to reconstruct this phase of Ork history, the story had to be pieced together from fragments of Ork legends which have only passing references to Brainboyz and give only brief glimpses of a time when Orks were not in control.

With Ork society now dominated by its strongest and most brutal elements, Ork civilization is faced with a major problem: the maintenance of technology. The Orks have found the obvious solution in their use of slaves. Apart from the Mekboyz, who are Orks with a residual, innate talent for technology, Orks rely on enlsaved Humans and other aliens in their workshops and factories. More importantly, the rely on tribute exacted from vassal alien communities. This tribute is paid in the form of armaments and technology. Sometimes whole communities and planets are occupied by Ork warriors, enslaved, and put to work making armaments.

After several vicious and destructive wars, many alien communities willingly manufacture equipment for the Orks as bribes to keep them away, or as tribute to provide protection.

Brain Boyz= Old Ones..... not Slann.... Slann and Old Ones are different now :-P. The old ones created the kork (orks), as stated just about everywhere, and mysteriously vanished (see: wiped out be a disease). Although it would be amazingly funny if the all powerful old ones turned into snotlings.

As far as the fluff Yak found is concerned.... while that may have been cannon awhile back, several things mentioned are no longer so.... like the orks relying on slave planets for technology and weaponry.... because as of now, ork weapons are produced by orks, and only work because orks believe that they should.

I have to agree with the Old ones having created the Orks. A lot of background points to it and the Snotlings theory doesn't quite make sense, one they wouldn't have the intelect for it and two the whole Ork reproductive process (Spores) mean that stotlings, gretchins, squigs and Orks can all be created from the spores shed by one ork

Uhhhh. . .so did you just ignore what I posted above?

And there's no reason that the more recent fluff about the 'Old Ones' creating the Orks can't be reconciled with the previous fluff about the Brainboyz.

It could just be said that the Old Ones created the species and how they developed from there is the story of the brainboyz.

Well, having recalled some ork and necron fluff...

If I remeber correctly the Orcs where created by the Old Ones to fight the necrons. Which would make sense seeing as the orcs are probably the most survivable thing out there and are specifically bred for warfare. The reasons that the boyz can make all the technology they want is because it was genetically imprinted into the mech boys. The same goes for all of the different types of boyz. The painboyz can instinctually perform surgery, and the orcs themselves can instinctually fight.

I think the Brainboyz are definitely the Old Ones. From what I heard, the Old Ones created the Orks and the Eldar to fight the Necrons. The Orks were created because the Old Ones needed tough soldiers who were physically stronger than the Necrons and could easily reproduce. The Eldar were not made tough or strong at all, but intelligent. This was so the Eldar could command the Orks and make powerful weaponry to support their Ork auxiliaries. This might also explain why The Fall happened, the Orks needed no jiggy-wiggy to reproduce, while the Eldar were given the birds and the bees. Anyway, the Orks eventually turned against the Eldar because, despite their slight lack of intelligence, realized that they could destroy the Eldar if they turned on them. And that, is why the Orks are so aggressive.

I kinda went off-topic there, but that is my theory on the Brainboyz.

The Fall was due to Slaanesh, not an ork uprising. Besides, the Eldar were meant as a seperate force to the Orks, not commanders to them. The Eldar were more numerous then and probably had even more powerful psyker abilities, chances are these multiple species were used to make the Ctan fight on many fronts, and let the Old ones try and regain lost land
