I always understood that they were the Old Gods from Necrontyr myth that created all the current races in the 40K universe, but I could be dead wrong.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Grotz were the brainboyz a long time ago, with the Orks as their servants. Then something went wrong and they were no longer as intelligent, their special foodsource got eaten by Orks I think.

But since I don't remember where I found this information, I can't say if it's right or wrong.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

in the new Ork book it sayz the Brainboyz are smaller than the orks and it refers to Orks and gretchin as "their slaves".

they might be the squats.

The brainboyz were thought to be the ones who engineered ork society, creating orks as an army to protect them. However, somehow the orks turned the tables and now the brainboyz have evolved into the diminutive grots and snotlings.

only snotlings. grotz are much smarter.

well, from a snotling point of view at least.

They are just a mythological group of snotlings that ate special fungus that made them smart. they created orks and grots to cultivate the fungus. In truth the Orks don't know much about them and just know that the ork race was created by another. My guess is that the brainboyz never really existed, it is just the Ork way of explaining why their society works the way it does and how that they were not evolving.

This is correct. Here is another interesting point to mention: The brain boyz supposidly "died" or were messed up by some disease (I don't know the reference for this but I think that is what I've heard). Well that doesn't make sense considering Gork and Mork pwned Nurgle back in the day. Mork got down and Gork pushed Nurgle over his back....that's why orks don't get sick.

The brainboyz created the orks to fight, and created the grots to cultivate fungus. also did some kind of genetic coding so that orks would always know how to make guns and fight and be totally aggressive

Da' orks were made ta fight 'n' win!

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the Orks wanted to try the smart fungus the brainboyz ate, but weren't allowed.

Eventually they ate all the supplies but got no advantages from it, thus reducing brainboyz to simpleton snotlings and leaving the orks and gretchin as the intelligent races.

Again, not entirely sure, but I know I read that somewhere.

I think it was deliberately left vague so that the player can pick his favourite option out of:
-Snotlings were puny but supersmart because of a special fungus and a plague/loss of the fungus/other disaster messed them up.
-The Krork were the brainboys, a now extinct type of orkoid that was created by the Old Ones. The Krork created Orks and Gretchin and Squigs and Snotlings as slaves, servants and warriors to help them in their war against the necrons.
-The Old Ones themselves were the Brainboys.

I like the latter options the best, but I like the fact that it's left a bit vague.

Isn't it funny how much fluff is very vague. I wonder if I'd prefer having more concrete fluff. It's hard to say.

Well most is fairly concrete, its just that this is some of the earliest backstory on the 40k timeline. Not to spark an OT debate but its the equivalent of our society's issue with evolution vs. creationism and the origins of our species.

I know. I just meant that all(most) of the more oftened discussed Fluff issues aren't very concrete. But if I think about this a little more it makes sense. Why discuss things we already know?
I hope I'm not helping spark a debate when I say evolution all the way.

Guys read the Necron Codex. Time for me to play smart*...*. There it is mentioned that the elder ones (whoever they might be) created the young races wihch the kork are part of. The Slann are just servants. What you can now argue about is what a ork may call a brainboy. the elders and their servants or just the elders. Why they mentioned that the snotlings are degenerated brainbyoz is out of my reach. Maybe they really were a servant race to grow orcs but we don't know that. Not to mention that sexy orc woman get lost in the past. And I never forgive them that they killed Makari those bastards.

Sounds like a horrid 40k take on the Garden of Eden.

I'm pretty sure that's what it said in one of the old Ork Codexes, if found to be true, I think we have the asnwer.

i just checked my old old old ork codex and it says the brainboyz were assumed to be wiped out by a disease. They foresaw it though and engineered the regular orks with the tech knowhow and survivability that they needed to continue the race.

I think the smart fungus thing may have been a separate backstory piece in the same book but ill have to double check.

There's a lot of obscure fluff surrounding th beginnings of the 40k universe, isn't there?

Like the creation of the Emperor, and where the Inquisition got Digital Weapons from.
