It also seems to happen with GW's paints. I am extremely displeased with the quality of their metallic paints (like dwarf bronze, and whatever "gold" colours there are) because of very bad coverage, while on the "2nd edition" paint sets, the gold was easily applied over black.

The same for Blood Red, coverage on white is simply weak. I am enjoying quite a bad streak of paints, out of about 3 of each one I mentioned none of them gave the same coverage as the previous set.

doesnt affect me much, i use 90 percent vallejo paint. as long as blood red, camo green and a few other colors stay, im fine.

As a proud owner of a few pots of Ral Partha colors, I know the sting of lost colors (nobody can have the last 1/4 pot of Paladin blue...). My approach has always been to take colors from many ranges, so I'm less impacted.

Seriously though, I love vallejo colors, but between inconsitent pigment, the "shake till your arm comes off" requirement, and the nozzles that get clogged on a whim... I'm getting a little annoyed. What are the cool kids using these days? Reaper masters? P3?

I use mostly Vallejo now, but I do think it's kind of wack that they are discontinuing so many paints. I remember being a bit disappointed when they discontinued Beaten Copper last time.

And any reason yet why they are replacing all the inks with washes?

Fiery Orange?
Brazen Brass?!
BLEACHED BONE!?!
::insert incoherant ranting here::

The brass is a key color in my Necrons, and the bone for my Tyranids (is there a `nid army where it isn't?). I did just happen to pick up new pots of the orange and brass, since I'm getting back into the swing of things, and the last time I had opened my paints was over a year ago (not pretty) and am in the process of restocking. May have to make sure I get a pot of the bone too, and possibly another brass.

I have great luck putting Blood Red over white. The main scheme of my marines is black armor, blood red powerfist. I'll take the time the paint the first white, then paint it red, because it comes out so much nicer.

I've pretty much moved away from GW paints. I've been using Reaper Master Series paints and with a recent retailer opening up in Cincinnati I now have access to Vallejo Model Color and Coat d'arms paints as well.

Three words,

Valleyo model colours

I switched 3 years ago, the only things I use from GW are the black and white undercoats, boltgun metal and brown ink.

Best decision I've ever made........

I started switching to Vallejo, and then switched back to GW for all colours except metalics (Vallejo metallics work very well) as I couln't get used to the 'watery' consistency.

You answered your own question. GW is becoming synonymous with the words "dense" and "greedy".

Some of the paints can be easily re created, but you’re going to have to buy 2 or more paints in some cases, which is probably exactly what GW is planning. Every since there re-launch of the “bitz” program it’s more then obvious GW is just gouging the ever-loving crap out of us. What’s worse is that people still defend them.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

...I just know they're going from inks to washes again because washes are cheaper, so they can make more off an inferior product... I got a few extra pots last night just in case; atleast I'll be able to finish my current armies.

The problem with the paints though is that there are a plethora of substitutes. GW paints generally are in line, sufficient that I'm ok buying them to support the store. This is not the case with their terrain and "hobby tools." But they have to have the needed product. If they don't have it Vallejo, PP, Citadel, Testors, Tamiya do (beginning to see the problem?)

I spoke to a Blueshirt (so take it for what its worth) and the paints will disappear on 9th June.

The whiole ink range is being replaced, however the new inks are matt rather than satin finish. According to tests he did during a full timers meeting at head office the new inks are better.

Dumb question... What's the difference between an ink and a wash anyways?

Toowoomba, Australia

Was at my local GW last night buying x5 terracotta, x3 tanned flesh and x2 chestnut inks for my lizardmen before the line runs out and asked about the inks.

GW stores have a listing of exactly what paints are being phased out.

29 Feb is either the day they are stopped from being stocked in stores or they are not receiving any more from UK. This is the date for Australia.

I was told ink ranges are to be replaced with repackaged inks Not washes and will have a new mix so expect some variation at least (why I bought the ink).

So get buying the paints you need!

If it is anything like the old 2nd edition era paint sets, the washes have more of a standard satin style finish than the glossy ink finish that you get right now.
