*Wonders how a bigger base lets you kill more models in CC*

well you get to contact more enemy models, meaning your kill zone is much bigger stopping the enemy from removing models so that the rest of you DE unit cannot hit them. it's probably the best way to tie opponents up that you can't win against. with my guard if i'm in CC with a bunch of termies (chaos, and marine termie captains) i remove all death before powerfists strike from the front, so that none of my squad is in base to base with the enemy. thus the powerfists don't strike, and i have time to position my men to destroy the termies when they do win. unless i already have guys there to counter them, then i let em' wipe the guard unit, and i mow em' down on my turn. it also works for a charge if done correctly (but i rarely ever do that right)

i use it on min e, but they are more of hold the line guard. i think it could work well for any guard army because it really can help in a bind and is even better if your bad at making moral checks. also it's only 5pts per command group (only the officer can have it) so it's not a bad buy, being able to rally under half and all

I've run several drop lists, and Iron Discipline is usually well worth it. Your troops will die in droves, but it's often hard to kill a whole squad of guardsmen when there are so many squads dropping in. Try to get a couple officers to drop in towards your edge and they can rally people as they fall back.
Also remember your troops can continue to fire as they fall back, as they'll be doing it a lot.

Not really a point eater. Light Infantry has useful and genuine strategic purposes.
Give it to, in this order:
1. Heavy Weapon Squads.
2. HQ units.
3. Everything else.
Infiltration in a Guard army is not about getting closer to the enemy. What you use Infiltration for is to deploy after the enemy. Being able to place your HW units and HQ units after you've seen where the enemy has gone so you can effectivley deployed HW units in good fire lanes/make sure your HQ units are out of sight is definately worth paying 30-50 points per army for.
It's a good Doctrine.

Not only that, but it lets you make better use of what cover is available on the table, especially if deploy in quarters. Plus, it's free movement for the guard, which is always a good thing.
The problem is, though, that if you're using light infantry, you probably need to start with a larger chunk of your troops on the board. If you only have a handful of units on the board to start with and plan on dropping in the rest, those few units that start on the board are going to get swamped and wiped out pretty quickly (potentially).
