Whatever afterlife the Dungeon Master went to I want to follow when it's my turn to go to the great plane beyond. We all know the afterlife has a great gaming base now at least. For now though I'm just gonna try and keep a good one in this world to honor one of the greatest gamers to ever live.

I might be wrong, but I think Citadel Miniatures started out making figures for D&D, and White Dwarf was a D&D magazine.

That is sad. I started playing D&D in 81 while I was just a kid of 7. I discovered minis for D&D at 12 and never looked back. I kept playing D&D at about 19 with a few a return to it for a year or so when I was about 24. I met Gary a time or two and always found him interesting. Very sad to hear him go. I worked with a Guy in IL. who has a crazy Origins story about Gary and another guy ending up staying with him in his hotel room due to my buddies boss's insistance. Apperently Gary relaxed and slept in the buff and it did not really matter who was present during these periods. A funny story to be sure! RIP Gary. Now you have a whole new audience to teach a game too.

I owe a lot to D&D. Not only has it provided me with untold hours of entertainment and really gave me an outlet of imagination, but D&D is actually responsible for me learning to read. When I was a kid, my parents though I might have some kind of learning disability (now people just think I’m slowed ) because I was seriously lagging behind in learning to read. I had managed to cover it up fairly well since I could memorize things really fast and if a book had pictures, I could more or less recount what was on that page due to the pictures. As it turns out, the issue wasn’t that I couldn’t learn to read, it was that I just didn’t really care. All of that changed when a friend of mine in 3rd grade got a hold of his older brother’s D&D basic books. I finally found something that I really wanted to do and in order to do it, I had to read. It was almost an over night change as I devoured the rule books and later on any other supplement I could get my hands on. This of course lead directly to a love of fantasy novels and lots of other things but I have to recognize that D&D has played a very significant role in my life and I’ve very grateful to it’s creators.

My favorite play on Gary Gygax was a Simpsons episode where someone introduced themselves to Gary and he said, "Hi, I'm Gary Gygax and I'm..." rolled a d20... "pleased to meet you!"

Like many others, if it hadn't been for D&D I wouldn't be here. I was 6 when I first saw D&D. My brother and I had a teenage boy watching us when our parents went out and he told us all about D&D.
My brother asked for the basic set and we never looked back. Haven't role-played since "92, but there were a lot of fun nights playing till then. Maybe I can find my old boxed set...
RIP Gygax

I was given the Basic D&D box set when I was just a kid of 7 years (you remember the Red one!) and bought all of the box sets not long after, until a friend introduced me to Advanced Dungeons and Dragons when I was 13. I didn't actually put the game down until I was nearly 30... so nearly a quarter of a century of fun.
And like all of you, without D&D, I wouldn't be here (I played the WFB Roleplaying game 17 years ago).
I know the old heads will remember the Saturday morning cartoon Dungeons and Dragons. It had all the classic AD&D characters, a Dungeon Master and Tiamat. It was fantastic.
There aren't many people that can say that their idea spawned Roleplaying games, Saturday morning cartoons, TV movies (remember Monsters and Mazes, that horrid creation), books, PC games, video games, card games, and movies. Not bad for a guy who had a kookie idea in his mid-30s.
Thank you Mr Gygax, wherever you are.

Ahh, D&D started me on my path to rpg/miniature madness and I haven't stopped since. I remember when a friend a mine just gave me the basic set in elementary school, played with some friends and they were hooked ever since. Real life seemed very dull, with D&D it was fun escapism that fill stories that we still say today. Where else can you use words like ethereal or corporeal? Gygax could be credited with being the granddaddy of all gaming that started off an industry where there was none. Hell, we would still be playing chess and stratego. His adventures seemed to be the toughest but also the craziest fun as well. I hope they gave him a viking funeral as a send off.

That was Futurama. I emailed Gary after seeing that wondering if they flew him out to California. He said unfortunately, no. He did the voicework over the phone. We also had a Gygax shrine at our WotC Retail shop in Mall of America. One of the items was a clock with a characiture of Gary from Dragon Magazine taped on the face. I took that clock and got it signed by Gary and still have it to this day. His comment upon seeing the clock was "Hey! This is fun!"
I'll miss the oldest DM. He always had a smile and a glint in his eye when you talked gaming with him. Photo of the last time I met with him:

I guess I'm a little backwards - I started with 40k nine years ago and only played my first D&D game a few weeks ago at my gaming club. It's a helluva game, wish I'd gotten into it earlier.
It's sad news. When I mentioned it to my regular GM, he said: "Man, I wish I could get on a plane over there right now. I'm a level 20 Paladin!"
Too soon, perhaps, but I couldn't help chuckling.
Godspeed, Mr. Gygax. GG.
