It's not 40k related, but where would gaming today be without him? Chainmail was one of the earlier fantasy miniature games, after all.
Dungeons and Dragons was my gateway game, and his passing has saddened me more than I would have expected.
Hope he's got that +1 mace to defend himself against drunken robots now.

Yeah he did a lot of cool things during his life time and definitely brought fun into my life via his games and creative talents. One of the most memorable things I can think of is how he lent his voice to the D&D: Online game as the dungeon master. It was neat to actually hear him say all those lines and really put his heart into it through out the adventures as opposed to some B rated actor.
Cheers for all the good times.

I honestly have to say I'm a bit emotional about it.
If not for him, in all likelihood none of us would be playing these games, though some of us would still be historical wargamers.
My favorite story about him was during the 80s, when D&D was subject to many accusations of Satanism and other such garbage, and he was on a TV talk show (like an opposing viewpoints type thing) with some idiot was attacking the game, and he said that the only people who could possibly have any problems with the game would have to be people with prior serious psychological disturbances.
So the idiot, realizing he’s being out-argued but defending his idiocy, says something like “But couldn’t such a disturbed person use the game to harm themselves or other people?”
And Gygax says “Yes, but couldn’t the same disturbed person also use a chair, any chair, say the one I’m sitting in now, and bash someone over the head with it? So now let’s all ban chairs, because someone might get hurt.”

The God Xagyg has lost his avatar on the prime material plane today. All of Greyhawk, nay, all of Oerth mourns this passing as if its soul has been removed from its core. In many ways it really has.
I havent roleplayed in about 8 years.
Tonight, I will sit down with my original 3 D&D pamphlets and read through the wonder he gave me when I was quite young. Its the best way I can think of to remember him.
I hope he goes to the place where he most dreamed of, because I knew he took me there twice a week for nearly a decade.
He deserves that much atleast.

Gamespy Interview, 2004:
Gamespy: "I hope this doesn't sound morbid, but what would you like to have written on your tombstone? How do you want the world to remember you?
Gygax: "I was gonna say, 'Better here than Philadelphia,' but I think somebody already did that. [Laughs] I would like the world to remember me as the guy who really enjoyed playing games and sharing his knowledge and his fun pastimes with everybody else.

D&D was an incredible leap forward in gaming. I think it’s creation was more than just a nice past-time. It really is a brilliant piece of work. It has influenced and inspired other games beyond it’s own game system. And even into the realm of books, movies, media, and more. We might all still be playing Monopoly and Checkers if it wasn’t for Gary Gygax.
I hope an award is given to Mr. Gygax in his memory. As the co-creator of D&D (and solely responsible for many of it’s creations) he has touched the lives of nearly everyone on earth. It’s an accomplishment that is truly remarkable.
I mourn your passing Mr. Gygax,
