i decided to put my ogryns back around my artillery so when he tries to drop in he will have to deal with a whole squad of 3wound models

Guard- 2500pts
Dark Angels- 1750pts
Orks- 1750pts
Empire- 2000pts
a good soldier obeys without question, a good officer commands without doubt

some times you just have to straighten your cap and die like a guardsman-anon

Why commit your best assault force back by the artillery? If I was your opponent, I would change my deepstrike location once I saw your deployment and leave the Ogryn isolated and essentially out of play. As an IG commander, here are some simple things to keep in mind when doing your mission planning:

1. Tanks (or artillery) without infantry in close are dead tanks IN RESTRICTED AREAS. If you play with alot of terrain on your boards, I would consider leaving an IG squad in a position from which it can provide effective fires in two directions: down one of your enemy's main avenues of approach and protect your vehicle. A piece of woods is excellent for this. Deploy the squad in the woods so that it benefits from cover. Make sure the special weapons can cover your enemy's approach and can see your own vehicle. Don't discount lasguns (thats right, lasGUNS) in your direct fire plan either. Lasguns, especially when rapid firing, will achieve target effects against even terminators.

2. Remember the principles of direct fire planning! As a guard commander, your application of firepower is what wins you battles. I've included them just in case you haven't seen them before.

Principles of Direct Fire Planning
1. Mass Effects
2. Destroy Greatest Threat First
3. Avoid Target Overkill
4. Employ Best Weapon for Target
5. Minimize Friendly Exposure
6. Prevent Fratricide
7. Plan for Limited Visibility

So what is the point of all that? Simply this: don't build your plan around what your opponent MIGHT do. Instead, consider your mission and the terrain and build a tentative plan and deploy accordingly, keeping possible contigencies in mind for what your opponent might do. Once your opponent has committed his pieces, either through deployment or deepstrike, then react accordingly. If you build an exceptionally good fireplan, you might find that your opponent has unwittingly committed a key piece right in the middle of your engagement area and ripe for destruction. Fight the Enemy, not the plan--either your plan or his!

Take care,
Mike K.

Daemon Hunter Inquisitors with at least 2 Mystics are the best! Being able to nominate any unit within 12" to get "free" shots at a deep-striking unit never gets old. You can also give 'im a psychic hood to deal with Chaos Sorcerors using the Lash spell, in which case I recommend taking a Ld10 lord...

Hey so I thought I'd update all of you on this with some practical real-world experience from this weekend:

I just came back from a friendly RT and I gotta say this dude's totally overrated. That's not to say he won't do something, but in my games? Meh. He spent all my games hidden in cover so no one could shoot him. Nobody got close to him either because I was able to shoot them or because they were content to outshoot me (I fielded a cityfight list so nothing really ranged beyond 24").

The worst part was that nobody really used deep-strike... until the last game that is! I went up against a marine drop pod army with a Fear the Darkness Librarian.

Sadly, I could never roll high enough to stop that power going off (you have to beat, not tie the score).

As for the mystics? Well as it turns out 4D6" ain't what it's cut out to be, my rolls averaged between 12 and 15, once I got 19 but I consider that generous! This simply wasn't enough to reach the enemy drop pods and whenever I nominated my ordnance for the 'free' shot it almost always deviated.

So er, yeah that's my 'review' if you will. My circumstances were relatively unique in that my Guard list wasn't standard, but I'd like to think my handling of the Inquisitor w/ Mystics was. If anyone else has actually tried this (not just theoryhammer) I'd love to hear from you!

If you think about it, having the chance is better then watching everything go south. After playing a game with them I to noticed a few things but was willing to stay with it because of the over all effect it has on the game. Tourny is going to be three to six games of which is a good chance that your going to be facing some list that require a bit of each item in the ret and of the lord. Mystics keep units from getting to close, melta gun in order to work needs to be how close? You might be getting 12 to 15 but your keeping said units off your back. Another point is that your hood will give you a chance to stop something that the enemy might have lined up. Lash, str10 Nid bolt, fear, you could go with this topic. Do you really want to just see if your tank can take a Str 10 bolt?

As of now I have worked a full ret and inq lord into my list. I know that some of the guys are going to just be standing around but the over all effect is what I am looking for. That Evasor is going to keep units at bay as well or your enemy is going to watch a 18" move/charge/dead module. Main thing I am still looking at is either a ranged weapon for him or the null rod. Null rod has it place and should help keep my unit on the board until its removed. Though the question for me remains if the null rod will finalize itself or not.

Null Rod will stop a horde of things,

Eldar powers,
Lash,
Nid powers
SM FOD--if tig drops in he could be looking at a str 10 demolisher cannon shoot.

You just need to find out what all is going on at your store and see if its worth putting this unit into play.
