Kilkrazy wrote:The word chaos derives from ancient Greek and was spelt with the Greek equivalent of K, being a hard syllable.
Most other Greek derived words are spelt with K, such as kinetic. I don't know why Chaos wasn't.
Most likely because it came into to English indirectly via Latin. Latin makes extremely infrequent use of the letter 'K', so it was transcribed as a 'C'. (It's the same Ch as in 'Chemistry' if that helps).
PistolWraithCaine wrote:Beriothien wrote:

I believe the answer to that question is the same reason why we don't call wyches wai-ches. Saying tair-inid sounds awkward to most people.
On a side note. How do most of you guys pronounce lascannon or lasgun? Do you use a long a (lace-cannon) or short a (las-cannon). I think the second is correct and that's what I say because there is no vowel to make the a long but I hear people say lace-cannon all the time.
Lascannon/Lasgun is a short form for LASER Cannon / LASER Gun, so I'd have to go with the long 'A' being more correct - I always use the second. I supposed it would be most correct to break it out and say "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation cannon".

Oops, sorry. I have no idea why I expected "IPA" to be comprehensible without saying what it stood for. Yeah, I'm dumb (or at least way too lazy).
IPA = International Phonetic Alphabet
Linguists use it to write things out, well, phonetically. In theory, it has sufficient symbols to represent every meaningful sound ("phoneme") in human speech, as well as many allophones of those phonemes (other sounds which don't change the meaning... e.g., "t[sup]h[/sup]" for the t-sound in "top" and "t" for the t-sound in "stop"... different, but doesn't change the meaning, at least not in English). If you include a sufficient level of detail, you can write with regional accents, which is just awesome. Okay, I'm getting sidetracked.
Basically, it lets you write everything phonetically while being totally clear to anyone else who knows how to read it, avoiding the hilarious hodgepodges of different phonetic spellings that invariably pop up otherwise. Of course, those are half the fun of these discussions, so maybe it's best left alone.

Chay-oss. AGREE
Shy-mara. DISAGREE. "Ky-mera." Again, it's a Greek word - the CH makes a K noise.
Baskee-lisk. DISAGREE. There's only one K in 'Basilisk.' Bas-UH-lisk.
Ten-zentch. DISAGREE. Tzar. Tzeentch. "Zeentch."
Ka-horn. DISAGREE. Where's the 'a' noise coming from, between the K and the H? Isn't it like "CORN?"
Nerjle. DISAGREE. NUR-gul. Based off pronunciation of ancient Babylonian god of death.
Slay-neeesh. NOT SURE. I say "Slah-nesh," because I like the 'aah' noise better than a hard 'a,' but that could be personal preference.
