A valid point. I guess if you've been using those offbeat bits of wargear all along, then any trimming down is definitely a loss for you. I can't and won't try to deny it. For me, with my own priorities, I consider it a small loss, and that the new style of options (as seen in Eldar, BA, DA, Orks and Chaos) gives enough scope for customisation. But that's just me.
Combi-grenade launchers do exist, but not in the Marine dex. I was just using them as a kind of iconic "useless weapon."

Didn't they actually release a chaplain with thunder hammer and power fist? That kinda makes sense now, no?

Crozium arcum (spelling?) and power fist, chaplains always come with the later weapon

Ah right, I saw a conversion from that to a Salamanders character with fist and thunderhammer just cause it looked cool.

tegeus-Cromis wrote:Oh bs. What kind of wild and crazy gear do you see on loyalist Vet Sgts, eh? Combi-meltas, mastercrafted chainswords--is that what you see? No, you see PF + BP, and in 5th, you'll see PF + bolter or sometimes PW + BP. The "flexibility" has always been mostly illusory. I welcome the streamlining.
It's to get around people taking Vet Sgts with master crafted thunder hammers and terminator honors. You could get a CSM Champ with master crafter power fist, mutation and spikey bits I think. Other armies had similar over the top combos to make their killy units more killy. 5th edition is about masses of troops, not characters or specialized troops. It's going to be real boring as far as I can tell.

I don't believe that's the reason, to be honest. Such units have never been the real game-winners in 4th and, at least from what I've seen, are seldom used. Fluffbunnies don't use them because they "feel" cheesy. Powergamers don't use them because they are really not very good. PF + BP does the job in 4th (Termie Honours is a given, since you need it to unlock the PF), so why take anything else? The simpler answer for the change is the one GW has been giving: simplicity. Fewer options means its easier for new players to understand, easier for the devs to handle, and easier to put out minis that represent the options the unit has.

I dunno, I still kind of liked the armory. I would have liked it a lot better if they repriced or stripped out some of the crap (bionics, combi-letter opener etc.) and put in some heavier weapons. Maybe you don't need a jump packing chapter master with a lascannon, but something to make better use of that BS5 than a storm bolter would be nice.

Storm Bolters will no doubt become twin linked bolters as in the Chaos Codex, which gets rid of their assault capabilities.

You couldn't be more wrong. I was out of the hobby when the previous version of the Chaos dex was in use, so I'm not too sure how it was there, but in 3rd ed, loyalists had SBs where CSMs had TL bolters. I don't see the SB going anywhere.

Oh, right I just assumed Chaos got the Storm Bolters on rhinos like SM's did in the old codex
