Try GTA4 if (if you're old enough of course). There really isn't anything pro-American in there. More like "the american dream sucks".

And Thompson had it coming. I hope somebody will beat some sense into the anti-gaming group here in germany too.

Yah, perhaps you'll be able to see the actual political symbols for Germany in WWII games. I always thought censoring history was kind of silly.

You know, I've heard of people being concerned about violence, sex, Nazi imagery, and all sorts of things that have been in video games. American content is a new one, haven't heard that one before, I've got to hand it to you.

Well they make up about 5% of all games so I think we should sound the alarm. Though having played some of the games mentioned it seems that kittenslayer's definition of pro-American is a game where Americans are in it. Much like God of War is pro-Spartan propoganda, or Mario, pro-Italian.

I have heard that complaint before on some programs on History International and Nat Geo Channel in which terrorist sponsored websites had mods to play as "freedom fighters" and kill US Soldiers. I can understand their perspective, but a kiwi having a hard on to kill a close international friend is a little weird.

You can do it via mods in a couple of different games. Or in some games, like the battlefield series, you have the option to play factions that were at war with the US (Axis forces in 1942, or Vietcong in Vietnam).

There was an interesting trade off with some counterstrike players that I heard about. Some guy out there (I'm lead to believe they were Americans but I wouldn't have been surprised if they were Israeli) made a counter strike map that was supposedly a rather accurate map of one of the Iranian nuclear development sites. The "counter terrorist" objective was to capture some scientists in the facility. Apparently a month or two after that map got widely circulated, some guys in Iran made a map of a near by US air force base (in Israel I think) and the objective there was to recapture the scientists that had been kidnapped from the nuke site.

It's exchanges like this that really warm my heart as a gamer. People on both sides of a politically charged climate where real war is a possibility are showing their sides via games and having fun with it instead of killing each other.

I don't think I've ever played a game where I was hoping to kill "x" type of person/citizen. I have to marvel at the kind of ignorant thinking that goes on behind that.

Oh please, when you people a world war 2 game set in Europe, of course you are killing Germans. So there's something wrong by calling killing American soldiers on games "killing yanks"?

If you can support your country invading other another country under lies, you shouldn't be suprised that people tend to want to kill your soldiers on games.

The difference is that I don't buy WWII games to specifically target Germans, much like I don't play Mario to specifically target turtles and mushrooms. In Battlefield I choose random and enjoy playing on any team. The only hope I have is to have fun.

You on the other hand specifically want to target a specific people, and that is disturbing. I'm not suprised that the Taliban et al would want to, but you aren't an Afghani, Iranian, Palestinian, or Iraqi. There are people in the US that are also adamantly against the conflict, but they don't long for taking head shots on soldiers.

I think you may have a problem and should seek help before you hurt yourself or someone.

Ignore him guys. He comes from a 'country' that has more sheep than people.

(I'm an Aussie, so I'm allowed to say that about our backwards cousins to the east! ).

Anyway, back to Wacko Jacko (not the one who likes children, the one who wants to protect children). He wrote a 15 page rant (best word I can use to describe it) on why he shouldn't disbarred. Highlights include:

1. Claiming the judge isn't a judge.
2. Invoking Goodwin's Law and comparing the Florida Bar to Nazi Germany.
3. Quoting whole sections of the Bible and virtually claiming to be on a mission from God (minus the musical talent).

He also has it in his head now that he's going to bring criminal proceedings on the members of the bar.

I think he's lost it...

Seriously though, I don't think he ever had it. He just happened to be a convenient mouthpiece for some small hate groups that managed to get some support via fear mongering. The world is a better place without that sort of crap in it.

Isn't it scary when people start playing games because they can kill Americans/Germans/Cops/Middle-Easterners?

Yes, ithat actually does sound very scary.

I would never play video games because I can "kill"/attack some specific group or nation. I even came to the conclusion, that personally, I prefer games with more fictional antagonists, like I dunno, A.I.M. or some secret made-up government agency.

also...
Oh please, when you people PLAY a world war 2 game set in Europe, of course you are killing Germans.
(fixed your typo btw.)

It's not killing. It's a frickin videogame. That is exactly the kind of thinking which invented terms like Jack Thompson's favourite "Murder Simulators."

I don't want to start a Troll-War here, but I have to ask you kittenslayer: how old are you? Because I can't shake that nagging feeling that you're in that kind of age where you're not even supposed to play Call of Duty or Medal of Honour and stuff like that.

Old post, but no I did not lie and yes I never played. I have never played pro American football, pro baseball, or pro hockey. I've played amateur in various forms, like high school teams and leagues, but never pro.

And I know you don't mean to say that the pro version of sports is the same as the amateur leagues.

kittenslayer - I have to wonder what your problem is?

You (I assume from your posts) have an intense ideological opposition to western military engagement in the middle east. Fair enough, you're perfectly entitled to have that opinion. However, you seem to have developed a rampant xenophobia regarding the nations involved.

This is an international forum. Everyone here is an individual with their own thoughts, ideas and ideals, brought together by a common interest in gaming, modelling and painting.
If someone says something you don't like, fine, tell them. If its serious or abusive, tell a mod (its one of the reasons they're there), but please don't make invective, sweeping generalisations about people.

Its seriously counter-productive and lowers the tone of the debate. This is supposed to be a thread about age restrictions and/or censorship of video games, not america-bashing!

While you sleep, they'll be waiting...

Have you thought about the Axis of Evil pension scheme?

This is actually a bigger thing than you might imagine.

There are companies in the Middle East that produce games specifically so you can play as a Palastinian and kill Israelis and Americans. They see it as a responce to western games where you kill Arabs. Major disconnect here is that the games being made in the west are being made to be fun - who you're shooting at is rather immaterial - yet they see it as us acting out a fantasy, and thus make a game that responds to us.

There's one that has the start of the game show the real-life massacre at a Mosque by a Zionist terrorist. You then take up the role of someone to hunt down the Zionists. These are messed up games allowing kids in that part of the world grow up thinking its ok, normal and cool to kill Jews/westerners. It's very wrong, and very scary.

Now I think that the big JT has a right to be stopping those kind of games, as they are actively creating hate and tensions. To a lesser degree it could be said that (for example) COD4 demonises Middle Easterners, however the game is not designed to create fantasies wherein you kill the people that you may have a political disagreement in real life.

Now that is what should be called a murder simulator.
