Compare that with a not full colour, perfect bound 64pp codex costing £12 at retail, which we are asked to believe loses the retailer, distributor and publisher money.
Depending on the distribution chain, there are different ways to split the difference between retail cost and cost of production. On the retail end, (US numbers here, YMMV) it's 45% dirrect and 35% through a distributor, with the distributor getting about 12%. So GW as the publisher gets either 55% or 53%. Subtract off the costs to create, print, and ship to determine a profit. I'd assume GW makes some profit on a codex, but doesn't necessarily have to, as it supports the sale of miniatures. The distributor and Retailer certainly have a gross profit from the sale. Whether we have an actual profit at the end of the year is another question entirely.

Page 46 of the book may have an error. It says that TROOPS falling back may shoot... did they mean units? or just troops? RAW only the troops are shooting it does this in two places on the page
Maybe I was reading it too carefully

Don't usually visit websites that show that type of thing, honest, no really honest, but if it is anything like the mental scaring you get from listening to your parents at it when you and your girlfriend are in the room below then I can agree that it describes the way this topic has descended.
I am waiting for the day Steleck can admit he is wrong and actually be polite in the same post. I've got a few gaming years left so I may see it.

Will totally have to get two of the boxed sets and get those small books spiral-bound so they lay flat. Can't wait, much anticipation.
Costs like 10 bucks at a UPS store.
Don't forget to get the front and back covers laminated. 5$ more.
Priceless.
Skip the lamination, it will cause the covers to split when the corners get bumped. Get the clear covers (a loose plastic sheet that will stick tot he covers due to static) or simply have the outside corners rounded so they don't catch on things. If you are just slightly careful with it you don't even need the rounding or the covers since it is just as durable as it was before it was bound, except the spine is tougher.
and it should run about 7 bucks for a cut and coil (spiral) at Kinko's. Less if you know someone that works there.

GW distributes and retails a lot of its own product (vertical integration) retaining those revenues for itself. The US Workshop is less well integrated than UK, of course.
I agree with you that GW's primary motive is to sell miniatures, however I think it is wrong to suppose they don't make a profit on books. There are loads of other games companies making profits on books.

Any truth to the fluff moving the story along to the "end times"? I can't remember where I read that.
I will wait for the mini rulebook. I have been buying 40k junk for14 or 15 years now. I have more fluff then i care to think about.
I think it is a good business decision for GW to push the fluff. The universe is what sells 40k.

Duuuuuuude ....... you find Lemonparty OK but class the others as a degenerative slide? See, unclear writing like that and not allowing for people's different possible comprehension of your writing is aprime example of how we have so many arguments in YMDC over poor rule writing. I am sure Nurglewhatyamacallit will be around to give a 1000 word post to debate whether or not it is degenerative that no-one will understand - dread to see the diagrams for this though.
Anyway, I am almost thinking of taking 40k up again. Tau this time and some generic marines. Thought 4th had major faults in it that just didn't make me want to play so I just didn't. Played about 4 times in the last 2 years. The more I read about things the more it seems to spark my interest. Reread background and seeing art in one place isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Interestingly enough I had a friend over for dinner last night and pulled out Rogue Trader to look through it - it seemed appropriate on the cusp of a new version to look back at the first. I had forgotten all the hobby stuff and background that had been included in it. Very cool.
My wife mocked me that it was like I had pulled out a highschool yearbook as I flipped through both fondly and with nostalgia.

Yes rending is craptacular in a big way against them. That leaves carnie CC, mental bugs, and a lucky shot from a strength 8 template.
On the positive it looks like the minimum 6+ to hit skimmers is going the way of the dodo. If so all my stealers now have T shirts with "Fear the Reaper!" written in Tau and Eldar on them.
