I have to disagree magickal. With orks the skin is one of the most important focal points. (green tide is not because of their clothes) That is why it pays of to do it with more colours than just basic tausept, wash, tausept, Iyanden.

I must say for me it is a bit much too (only use 3 skintones, no wash on my orks skin) but the skin is very important!!

So very true! I had it at just those 4 steps and kept looking at it thinking "this just isnt yellow enough to pull of" it really does need those last highlight. Every step is important!

I think it looks great! My own orks are blue and stand out nicely against a green tide. Yours are definitely Bad Moons! I'd go with a complimentary shade of blue or purple for any warpaint that you do, just to help the yellow stand out.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Okay.
I will allow you to disagree with me THIS time.
Do not make a habit of it.

; )

Maybe I misspoke.
If you want to do every model to a high standard, then -by all means- you're DEFINITELY on the right track.
I used to be that way before I started playing 40K (and in my first few years of it). Then, I realized how little I actually get done between limited painting time and being a SLOW painter.
I've hit the point of "above table top" for rank & file and a higher degree of work on characters, tanks & other eye-catchers.

So, I was thinking in that manner.

Like I said, though, it DEFINITELY looks good.

the yellow looks great. But please make the most of it by having some cool fluff - e.g. is this a mutation of the normally green skin algae, or an accidental side effect of an especially insane painboy's experiments, or body paint to impress/intimidate someone, or what?

And has it had an effect on the army, e.g. are they despised by green orks? I can certainly see them being outcasts from normal ork society, and overcompensating by insisting they're a superior new breed of orks, and fighting in a slightly unususal way (maybe obsessing on a particular troop type or refusing to use a particular troop type)

Well in my original post I explained why they are yellow.

As for the effect...I'll have to think on that.

And now, for all your eager viewing pleasure, the nearly completely test model. I say nearly because theres little bits of touch up and some more dry brushing on the basing, but otherwise, finit! Oh yeah, can someone help me with some tips on nice, gnarly, grungy, grimy, dirty weapons?

Sooooo, what do you all think. Keep in mind it is ONLY a Boy, and on top of that, a Boy from the AoBR set. It's not perfect, it's not my greatest work, but it is definitely of table top quality and a horde of these coming across the field will look sick! You can be sure that the bigger models will have more minute detail.

I think the blue is too bright. Maybe thin it a bit more and leave some yellow basecolour showing through... Also use a black wash on the brown and grey clothes. It looks excellent after that (see my blog in the sig)... as a last note the black should be made using a dark grey and then a black wash. That way it does not look like primer as much...

Still a fan of the skintone, but the rest of the ork has to match that quality!!!

Great idea! I like the color you chose for your Orks. And the blue paint just POPS which to me is a good thing - it offsets the sickly algae color of the Ork's skin.

Very original! And very useful, especially if you play against other Ork Players.

I think that Ork looks alright. I've never been a fan of the bright green orks as it looks too cartoon like, I personally use catchcan green on my Orks

I had to register because of this paint scheme. I absolutely love it! If I were to field orks i would paint them the way you do it. That's absolutely Perfick.

That's not because I'm Swedish...

I would have said black but I like the way you have applied only thin-ish stripes instead of big blocks of blue. I like it as an accent. Looks rad!

Hey, been following this thread with interest.

I still think the metal looks too silver. Linking it to the earth tones of the model as a whole would really tie it together. I mentioned before mixing in brown to the Boltgun Metal; give it a go, it really works, especially with some washes applied afterwards.

If I'm being pedantic (and I am, in a positive/suggestive way), I think the trousers should be brown. I'm a big fan of limited palettes, and I think the black looks overpowering. The blue could use some highlights (if you have the time), but this should be the boldest colour on there. The black increases its competition in terms of eye-time.

I think they look excellent; the standard is great. An army of these will look fantastic. I'm only suggesting some tweaks, and they are totally subjective anyway.

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

id have to say great minds think alike. Because for my Orks i was wanting something different as well. and one of the color themes i thought about was yellow skin. im kicking around many "lighter" skin variations and that yellow looks great! it still looks orky at least you didnt go with like orange or blue skin.
as for the ORK weapons, two ways. theres a post someone put up about there nurgle army and he has some AWESOME rusting techniques he uses on everything (which im stealing lol) or washes. washes are perfect for dulling everything. best part they fill in cracks and lowspots and give minis ever more a cool look. scratch the hell out of that choppa and then wash it. might look pretty "used"

Again, very nice. I would rather you did not thin out the warpaint, but keep the color and narrow lines.

As for ugly weapons, the easiest I know of is a black base coat dry-brushed with boltgun metal.
