Mine went together pretty easy once I figured out there was an up and a down on the chassis. The flat thing you were sanding. The triangle post/hole thing in the arms throughout the box were a little off here and there as well... made posing some models tricky.
I was surprised at the scarcity of mold lines, and the plethora of flashing on the metal models.
Edit:
Also I suggest building your pods in stages...
I'd put the base together- the base, the center post, the fold down doors. then pain that. You can also assemble and paint the engine at this point
I'd paint the 6 spokes/arms individually.
After getting the base done, I'd add the individual marine housings. You know, the things that look like the harness from a particularly potent roller coaster, glue them down, then paint them.. you'll have to slip the peg under that center post and fit the tab into the slot in one motion.
If you assemble it entirely first, good luck getting a brush into everywhere.
The Vanguard are top heavy, you'll likely end up torqing their legs/junk they're posed on top of, to center their weight. At least two of mine were by default leaning a touch too much off center, and fell over if you blinked at them hard. Stick a little ball of Green Stuff in their jump pack hole as well.

Awesome mate, thanks for the advice, I was really leery of attempting the Vanguards in particular since they seemed perched really really high off the base, looks like i'll be using extra sprue clippings as base weight then

I built three of the fethers one as a thunder fire cannon and the other two for the top sponsons of a tower of skulls.
My tip use very strong clamps to get the barrel together and zip kicker to set the glue.

In the image isn't he holding the auspex with his left hand?
(This isn't just nit-picking i am generally curious to find out which hand it is in)

I havent actually built this model ...however I am nw thinking of using the treads for some orky conversion stuff and gettign rid of the rest or just sellign the entire thunderfire cannon
It should however be noted that my wonderful Pedro Kantor model on his one shoulder pad has a divot in it like god was teeing off on his arm, or like another model at the warehouse (possibly the terribly mold of captain cortez ) shot him with his bolter. Instead of being a cool dent and actually look like he has been raked with gunfire, its this single shot like he was standing in the middle of nowhere and some guard sniper was like wow lookit that idiot take em down !!
