cool ideas. i really like the glowing lighning claws. gives a eerie and powerful feel to the model. its a nice focus to draw the eye into the rest of the mini too. from outside to the armor and finally the face. i think painting is fun too. i started painting harlequins way back in second ed. and it has taken me along time to get away from the bright color schemes i love.(while those worked on eldar i fear my templars have to be more subdued colors) but i am now starting a black templar zealot army. i alway have trouble coming up with nice matching color schemes, thus i envy someone with your talent for using colors with restraint and making striking paint jobs nonetheless. very nice work. i have p3 color called murderous magenta which i really seem to like and i painted bronze and black with it on my assault marines (who look really cool cause they are bare chested and have zealot heads.) but my question is do you as a professional painter think that is good color combo. i really wanted to utilize white too. or citadel ice blue too on diffetent units. any ideas guys for helping me have a cohesive color scheme like master bursley here does?

I'm not a "master" lol but thanks for the compliment. As far as your BT zealot guys.. I'm not familiar with the "murderous magnets" color, but it sounds like you want to keep them dark. I'm all for it as you can tell but as an added bonus, it makes fleshy head stick out in a good way! Take some pix and start a P&M blog for those guys and I'll be sure to drop by and give you my 2 cents.

Ok since I seem to be trying new stuff on many models I have changed the title of this blog to WIP STUFFZ instead of my chaos build.. Gonna be doing a bunch of cool stuff here in the next couple weeks and I expect the fiber optics to be in any day now, for my glowing eyes WITHOUT BATTERIES tutorial! oh yeah! Opened up my Assault on Black Reach box and decided to work on this guy for a little bit. Here's as far as I went tonight. The pic may look dark but I assure you the light source was front left fluorescent light 6" from him... for reference the base is Scorched Brown.. go ahead.. hold your paint pot up to the computer monitor

Nice Marine, interesting concept. I'd like to see a bit further on this one, it looks like it could be a very impressive model.

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.

We laughed - knowing that better men would come,

He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags. |

and a little more work done.. calmed down the high tones a tad... did a basic flesh tone since the dark head was making me QQ. the shoulder shield design is my initials... This guy does not belong to any particular chapter.. Just painted him to paint... you would be surprised with what you could come up with if you just grabbed a mini and painted it how you wanted.. no codex guideline... JUST PAINT! heh.

Got my Fiber Optics in! here's the First test.
Not as bright as I thought, the shorter the line the less light it absorbs and this light is 1/8" after cutting. But I plan to do the same treatment to the shoulder lenses.
But I think I'm happy with how bright it is, because scale wise is just about right, almost just looks like a glob of Blaze Orange.

Drill the barrels out and you've got a winner
The two most recent pics don't look as good as previous ones. They have way too much black in them, don't show any detail.

I'll drill out the barrels eventually but its still 50% incomplete...
And about the paint... if you see my chaos guys.. I'll be doing most of my models with the "low light" fx... I always see the same thing when people paint with few exceptions.. color all over, ignoring areas that would normally be shaded.. hard lining..and the need for more depth range is there and thats what I try to do. I like dark colors more and it fits with my guys...

Hmm. Fiber optics certainly never occured to me. You got a coin-cell/led in the base or something? Doesn't seem practical... are they just exposed at the rear, hence the rear lighting working so well? Very interesting indeed. Okay, I can see something under the left arm of the sergeant. Is that connected to the eyes or just there for effect?

No battery.. if you look at the first pic above.. the fiber is wrapped around the left shoulder to get exposed to light, then enter the armor under the left arm. I just show the light from the back in the second shot to show off the glow. And it was really quick to do once I found a way to get the most light and length out of the fiber.. I like the glowing eyes but I wanted to never have to buy batteries.... Easy as.... -drill body -drill out eyes all the way through -feed fiber through eyes -cut flush DONE!

It's very effective in the photographs, will have to try it myself to see what it looks like thru meat-eyes though. Don't think I'll make it to CA anytime soon.
My job supplies me with all of the coin cells I could ever use. Well, maybe not EVER...

yeah if you have coin cells then you will have the best effect. just have to feed the fiber through the body under the base. then have a small led in the bottom to power the Fiber to 100%.. glue the fibers in a bundle and wrap a sliver of foil around the area where the LED and fibers touch.. then you can have 1 light source with as many fiber optics as you want.
I thought about this when a friend was using this for his train. His train had over 100 lights all powered by one LED.
would be awesome on tanks and stuff.. as you can buy fibers as thin as hair and it would basically be as bright as an LED that big.
That's it! I'm buying a tank tomorrow! B-4 someone else takes the idea... I'm sure whoever does it will be the first any have seen...
the possibilities... interior lights... ahhh.
Also if you want to sell some of those coin cells let me know

The problem is finding a small enough switch. Those little 0.5mm plastic box switches for boardwork usually come in rows of eight or so, and they're a dead pain in the arse to saw up. I REALLY don't think it's practical, actually. Not on 25mm bases. Not to mention the pain of wiring from base to head. Pinning is monotonous enough.

maybe not practical for models you actually play with but for display I think its worth the time and work.. for me anyways.
I'm always looking to do something new.
PRACTICAL or not.
and switch wise I I just plan on having a coin cell with a piece of plastic or paper to slide in between the positive on the battery and LED.
I know... not practical lol.. and whats so wrong with it.. too much time? I spend so much time painting.. spending twice the time to get a better effect with my lighting idea is easy mode. But maybe I'll be the only one to do it.. I hope anyways.

Well, yeah, centrepiece models are different. I'm slow enough at modelling/[painting as it is. Or maybe I'm just busy all the time.
Perhaps I'm just spend too much time on Dakka. I really need to get into painting my Eldar, after how brilliantly they served me today. I've got some Paypal bucks, so I might have a think about using them on some grav-tanks...

Yeah on single models its too much work if your playing with them.. but tanks and anything big enough would be cool.. like afshinbb said about doing the barrel on the heavy weapons.
just a matter of hiding the fiber... hell if you're good enough with green stuff you would only have to drill the single piece i.e. head or gun, then GS the fiber to the side of the mini all the way down.. or dremel down the side and make a channel for the fiber..that would work on plastics and metal.

Wow that is allot of stuff you have there! I look forward to seeing it once you paint it.
I wanted to let you know that I love your painting, and it really inspires me. The low light scheme on your chaos guys in genius, and the rest of your models are top notch.
Also one last thing. Im liking the fiber optics. That's something simple enough I could use it if I felt the desire. All in all its very nice.
Keep up the good work.

wow the defiler was a pain in the butt to put together lol but its ready for primer. I plan on having groups of 5 troops for each of the armies.
For now I'm working on:
Chaos Defiler
WHAT SCHEMES SHOULD I DO FOR THE TROOPS BELOW?
Tau Crisis Battlesuit
Tau Fire Warriors
Cadian Command HQ
Catachan Jungle Fighters
Eldar Guardians
Necron Warriors
Grey Knight SM Terminators
Tyranid Warriors
Tyranid Genestealers
Still need:
Inquisitors
Sisters of Battle
Dark Eldar
Soon: Hell Dorado Daemons Collection 30mm
keep an eye on this as I will update as I finish each group of troops.
