Which is fair enough Osbad.
I see the Gaming Space as an incentive to generate loyalty. The Wargames Market is not an easy one, just look at the rate FLGS go under. It might sound mercenary, but I like to know when my business is appreciated. For example, I game in my local GW (soon to start doing it at home) as it is a free venue with a good selection of opponents. This to me is an incentive to buy from them. Sure, if I don't the shop is likely to remain open, but FLGS are not so lucky.
If you have a choice between two shops, one offering a discount, the other gaming, consider which you use more. If you game at home, then go with the discount. If you don't/can't game at home, then I would buy from the store that facilitates my enjoyment of the hobby.

If I can get a better deal EASILY I will buy that way. Otherwise, I go through the FLGS.
My store has a Points program that basically amounts to 10% off gaming purchases, so it's hard to argue with.

I feel like I should make some sort of gesture as a "thank you" for letting me use their tables to play, so I get at least a blister every time.

I try to buy something small every time I go to my LGS, a blister pack of something or some comics usually. To get one or two items every week or two isn't bad, and on a single item the saving I'd make off the price online is offset by shipping and handling charges.
That said though, if I am making a larger purchase I simply cant ignore the savings from online stores.
The thing is, the LGS gives me a place to play many games that well, if it went out of business, I probably wouldn't be able to play much, if at all. Many of those same games are so expensive that I feel forced to find cheaper ways to collect them.

Another reason to shop locally is that the local store is an incubator for new players. More players means more potential opponents that I will meet around town at various times throughout my life. It's important to take the long view. I work at a book store and we give tons of free books to kids every year, in the hopes that they will become lifelong readers and buy lots of books from us later.

I'll second the breeding pit theory as well.
I used to run the Veterans Evenings at my local GW about 5 years ago, and my gaming group all come from those days, with welcome new additions every once in a while. They are good for all sorts of gaming, from the friendly style I prefer, to the more competitive side of things which can be fun once in a while (though I cannot fathom why would you play that way all the time).
A bit of new blood keeps things fresh, as not only do you have a new player to go up against, but a new army or two. With my lot, there is always at least one of us working on some new project, so it is rare that things get stale. And if they do, we can always wheel out an older army for a bit of fun and variety.

I don't make much of an effort, at ALL, to buy something everytime I am in my FLGS. But when I go in to shop, I make it a point to do just that. Every year my FLGS holds a February tax sale. Inventory redux, most of it is to just move slow moving items out the door. I've only made it twice in 8 years. This last time, I walked out with a 1200.00 receipt.
I may hit the occassional sale, but by his commentary, the owner of my FLGS is pretty convinced I've done "my part". Oh yes, I pay where I play.

when i am not at university i tend to play around a friends house (after GW cancelled Vets night (over 16's night) we moved to friends house e has an attic conversion with 2 gaming tables, tons of terrain and their is about 10 - 15 of us that go round there so their is always someone to play with a good range of opponents, all of my FLGS are GWs and i must confess after the treatment you seem to get from a GW lately i don't buy things from there unless it is something that i want on the day of release (like Codex's or Horus Heresy novels)
whilst i am at uni i play at a GW and as much as its great that they have a venue to go and play i still don't feel obliged to buy stuff from them just because i play at the store, i make a few purchases but its mainly just glue and the odd paint i need to replace in my mega paint set. At this GWs gaming night everyone is over 16 barring a couple of people which is nice as i can get on with a friendly game against i wide variety of opponents.
My apathy towards supporting the stores has lessened over time purely because of how i have noticed that GW wants to push 'regulars' out the stores as much as possible, the manager 90% of the time detests us being in the store playing a few quiet games in the corner or sitting around the painting table, painting and talking, which is odd, and refuses to let us play if we do not paint a new model towards finishing the army each week, of course this is not taking into consideration the fact that some among us (the people that have jobs/are students) don't have a great amount of time to devote to painting and it has now devolved into us actively avoiding days that he is in purely so that we do not get hassled about new releases/why we are devoting more time to playing than getting armies finished (i'm of the opinion that stuff will get painted when i want to work on it, for example atm i am enjoying working on my iron warriors so i am not going to force myself to paint my high elf army just so i can play with it as then my hobby becomes too much of chore to do)
still thats my 2cents on it so i really fit into category #2

99MDeery: WHAT a tool that guy sounds like. Someone needs to ask him why he's got gaming tales in there at all; sounds like all he needs is one to get the local kiddies hooked. I mean seriously, why bother having tables at all? Hell, he could more product into the store and in front of customer if he just made a tasteful display in the resulting space if he took out hte tables. I mean, if you are going to operate toward a purpose, you might as well maximize your potential. What an idiot. He's cutting his own throat.
