GW sells a lot more Un-Spikey Marines than the Spikey kind (now with skulls!). Hence, the Un-Spikey Codex gets more attention than the Spikey codex (now with even more skulls!). Of course the Spikey Marines get more love than the Spikey Space Elves, but then again, the Spikey Space Elves tend to find love on their own (and with less skulls).
In the end GW writes rules to sell models. When models with spikes sell more than those without, you will get a great codex. Solution: buy as many Spikey Marines as you can to help get the wheels a rollin'.

Unfortunately, this somewhat haphazard release method means that they will never achieve much consistency, across the full range if they continue in this manner.
Yeah, the SM Codex sets the basic pattern for other Codices. And it's unfortunate that GW ended up with more Codices than what they could properly support each edition. So paring things back and controlling archetypes makes some sense moving forward.
As I see it, at the end of 3E, GW had dug themselves into a hole with too long of an edition with too many rules and too many Codices. 4th was GW's effort at trying to find a way to dig out, and with 5th, I think GW's pretty much figured out how 40k can go forward.
So when you compare with Fantasy, they're notionally one step ahead, as it took Fantasy didn't really get straightened out until 6th Edition. Of course, really, it's really the same, as there was a stealth 3.5 version when all of the "Trail" rules were in place just prior to 4th coming out.

I just feel sorry for all the armies out there with no dead models.. What are they supposed to do when they die? the rules just don't tell you what to do..

Since it's a well known fact that the ork 'dex is broken, then it should be obvious that what needs to be done is to not have the ork models die. Sure, they'll still suffer wounds and the like, and those wounds should be inflicted on the models themselves, but they should never "die".

The age of man is over; the time of the Ork has come. |

Techboss wrote:I need someone to help a slow out. I picked up the SM codex today and I can't for the figure out how GW produced something like the SM codex, which looks pretty solid all the way around, after producing the junk that is the CSM codex. Well, maybe my initial impression was wrong, so I check various units in comparison to one another. In general, the SM units are cheaper or more effective at the same slot as the equivalent CSM unit. Am I overreacting or is the SM codex clearly better than the CSM codex?
What is CSM codex, precious? My Codex: Fzorglebliterator Kingdoms is totally tits! Rock!

I think you are overreacting, unless you don't want to use oblits or lash. Orin other words what Abadabadoobaddon said but without the humor.

Heh, yes indeed HBMC! Thematicaly speaking that dex is a mess, what makes Chaos chaos?
Cults? (don't even exist anymore)
Rebels? (Had their codex yanked for no reason)
Lesser Demons? (got genericized and nerfed to the point no one plays them in the CSM list anyway, and put into a WHFB+= 40k dex?, troops that dont score?)
Greater Demons? (Uh no one plays these with demon princes being what they are)
Chaos dreadnoughts? (A unique chaos unit that... do they even offer the kit anymore this is such a bad unit)
Possesed? (No one even paints these because of their absurd random powers that are,... meh, including scout, that you get AFTER they set up?)
Landraider (Same cost with no machine spirit)
So what are we left with?
Chaos Marines
Terminators
Cult Marines
Obliterators
DPs
Raptors
Defilers
Chosen
Predators
So, it's the spiky version of the marine dex, with less options (Read Marine Dex- ATSKNF +Defiler and Oblits). Sad, the only thing to like in the CSM dex IMO is the wide variety of troop choices, but is that chaos or as good as the marine dex?
Not even close!

I play Alpha Legion.
My two daemon princes of strategy use their tactical prowess to trick enemy units into moving into big clumps.
Then my elite Alpha Legion terminators who also happen to be covered in heavy weapons shoot at them with plasma cannons.
I then proceed to claim objectives with my special Legionnaires whose veteran skill is T5 and Feel no Pain.
It's fluffy and competitive!
