openoffice.org -> calc because it really is free unlike excel though any spreadsheet program should work fine. Some day I may pony up some $ for army builder, but that means buying less minis so not as likely.

I use the 'archaic devices' and Excel... somehow blaming the computer over and over for every loss I make tends to be..tiresome..

One thing to keep in mind is that just because the particular program you are using lets you take something doesnt necessarily make it legal. you still need to know what your codex says is allowed for any given unit.

amazing, isn't it?

I'm there with you. Seems when you go through it the slow way you know your army better.

I used armybuilder 2.x for the longest time.
Pros:
-easy to use
-can make fiddly changes easily, like playing around with options to fill in those last magical 15 points or whatever
-printouts make very nice armylists, with full stats and everything

Cons:
-found a few bugs, annoying things you wouldn't notice without 100% familiarity with the codex
-occasionally, they misprint the stats, and you either feel like an idiot after having played games with an unnecessary handicap, or like a dick if you were unknowingly cheating

Since they stopped updating armybuilder 2.x, and I have no desire to repurchase armybuilder 3.x, I've switched to using excel.
Personally, I think it's a better option. Yes it's not as fancy, and can take a little bit longer. However, you become much more familiar with your codex, which makes you a better player overall.

That's just me though, half of my buddies use armybuilder, while the others are part of that ancient clan of "paper" and "pencil" users

wait wait wait wait... huh..?

I also use these archaic devices... mostly because it's hard to make a spreadsheet during spanish, calculus, and physics.

Also, pen and paper doesn't crash.
