Hey so I'm curious, what army making programs does everyone use for Warhammer 40K,

I used Armies of Immoren for Warmachine, and I think any program would be hard pressed to measure up to the ease and functionality of EasyAT-43

But W40K a much bigger game than either of those, so i'm wondering what other people use before i try and find something on my own.

I play so many different games and armies having them all in one place is the most convenient factor.

Army Builder for me all the way. Handles all my 40k, fantasy, necromunda, and any other system I dabble in. It handles the rare times I need printed lists for warmachine and hordes as well.

Army Builder for me. I've certainly gotten my money's worth out of it, especially if you get a friend to split it since it comes with two liscences and you can always buy more. It's great in situations where you're looking over someone else's list, or don't own other army's codeces.

Even beyond that, there are so many games it covers you have a wide range of uses for it if you ever think to expand. I started with 40k for 'nids, moved to Eldar, then Orks, now WHFB Dark Elves, and now looking at PP stuff.

you're actually paying money for something that you could do for free?

i use excel. it took me about a minute to write a little spreadsheet for myself. if i forget something i have my book to look it up it. i tried to use armybuilder once, but i wouldnt build the army that i wanted and insisted that a hive tyrant couldnt have two sets of scything talons. i turned it off after that.

If we were to play each other in a tournament, not only would I table you, I would murder you, your family, every woman you ever loved and burn down your house. I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live?

Personally I use the ones with Carbon in the middle.

when my maths fails me (or run out of fingers and toes), I reach for my calculator.

For writing up a "Formal" list, so my foes can check my army, I type it up in a spreadsheet (This is usually the point I find a maths error! )

A spread sheet and your codex, cant beat it.

just make a template, save it and you can make dozens of lists in minutes, its fun to just play around with fantasy lists that way.

Back in my day points were totaled on an abacus and we used a stick to write in the sand. Had to play games fast, before the tide came back in.

All of those are solid solutions, paper and pencil obviously works fine, but it's easier to do quick corrections and points fiddling in a program.

It's been years since I used Army Builder, and I'm not sure I want to go back to it, the interface at the time seemed a little meh, though it could have improved since.

It does strike me as odd that one of the most popular if not the most popular game, produced by the biggest gaming company in the world (excepting Wizards of the coast which doesn't quite apply) has such a lack of fan built, decent quality, army list creation software. Considerably smaller but equally complex and upgrade option based games like AT-43 have incredibly well built programs available for free. Hordes!/Warmachine has two or three of them.

I'm not so lazy as to be upset by this, I just think it's quite strange.

In any case I'll stick to paper and pencil for now, and maybe excel when I need a list for something more formal, at least until something better turns up.

I've done my fair share of pencil paper armies, but I did break down and buy army builder and haven't gone back since. Takes a little while to figure out how it works to make the things you want but the resources are there, and the few bugs it has with new codecis get worked out fairly quickly and in situations you need that something it won't let you do right then there is a Generic item you can throw in and name to hold it's place.

For Apocalypse games holy crap is this program awsome.

Hmm, that is interesting, but I hear it's been around for awhile and still on edition 1. But I'll give it a shot and check out their website. How much does a license cost?

I use Army Builder when I am at home to throw around ideas really quick and add and subtract large amounts of squads in a very short amount of time.

To finalize all my lists I just use paper, pencil, and codex as there is always the possibility of math errors in Army Builder.

I've used Excel for a long time now.

I used to use that wood-stick and paper method others have referred to, but I figure if I screw up some points costs, I can always blame the PC if I use Excel!

I took the time and created an eldar army maker in Excel.
Each unit type (troops, fast attack, etc.) has it own page with each of the units that belongs there with all stats and options available in drop down menus that have the prices integrated. I just choose the unit, number of troops, and upgrades. The entry automatically calculates the price for that unit. Then I just copy/paste that into the main "army" page and it adds up points for me.

Being a true programmer, I am lazy and generally only have the chops to some pain-in-the-bum thing once. So I sat down once and made an intelligent sheetset that lets me build an army in about 10 minutes.

I've thought about branching into chaos marines, but haven't cared enough to make another army specific creator.

Second that. For a tournament I will use a computer and type it up purty and print multiple copies. Then when the math is wrong I can still blame it on the computer some how.

@ karlfranz:
Spare time would be the kicker on that one. The army maker itself took me a weeks worth of lunch breaks to get set up. With 2 jobs and all the fun girls and games i try to squeeze in between them, there's not much space left to type up walkthroughs. However If proper interest arises I probably will do it. In the mean time, any eldar player interested in having the creator, just let me know. I will be happy to aid my fellow craftworlds in crushing the Mon-kiegh.
