The appointment also has to be confirmed by the US Senate, so it isn't just a free ride into national politics. Interestingly, the Senate has only refused to confirm a appointment 5 times in US history. And only once since Senators became publicly elected officials. In that last case the Senator was from Illinois, and was denied admittance due to allegations of corruption.
