The appointment also has to be confirmed by the US Senate, so it isn't just a free ride into national politics. Interestingly, the Senate has only refused to confirm a appointment 5 times in US history. And only once since Senators became publicly elected officials. In that last case the Senator was from Illinois, and was denied admittance due to allegations of corruption.

On the Daily Show last night, Jon Stewart pointed out that 3 of the last 7 IL govs have gone to prison. Assuming Blag does, that's 4 of 8. He points out that only 48% of murders go to prison - so statistically, you're more likely to go to prison if you're elected governor of Illinois that murder someone.

Illinois has corrupt politicians? Geez, next thing you know, someone will say that Louisiana does........
