Getting there man! You have made some progress. Glad you are still posting your progress.

I am finishing up a squad of guardsmen as I write this. I finished a hellhound, commisar and a heavy weapons base since you were last on I think. Was beginning to think ya bailed on your goal. Glad to see you haven't I am excited to see them finished. I respect that you are batching a big amount, so I will have to wait like everyone else.

Ya gotta love the ink stage. It really makes the models come to life.

Are you gonna do any armor for this army? Falcons and the like?

Anyway keep it up.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I have a Fire Prism, Three Wave Serpents and a Falcon, which need some conversion work before painting. I also need at least another Falcon for my intended list.

EDIT: List is here

Hopefully I'll have enough Dark Green Ink and Flesh Wash to finish the job!

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Okay, it's time I updated again properly. A lot of this is for my own reference, so bear with me repeating myself.

I've done:
Scorched Brown Undercoat
Dark Angels Green Undercoat
Brown upgraded to Bestial Brown
Details and Helmets picked out in Fortress Grey (to help yellows stand out)

So, now I'm up to Stage 2 Green - see pic for comparison (it should be obvious, but the one on the left is Green Stage 2):
As I mentioned before I globbed some Goblin Green into a quarter-full pot of Dark Angels green, and here's the result. After this stage is done they're basically at what I would consider a tabletop standard, but that's nowhere near good enough for me! 24 more to get up to this stage.

That is Hella good for table top quality!! Would love to see what your display quality is. Please take a large group shot of your army when you are done. Would like to see them all together. Nice work keep it up!

The army? Gawd, I'm only doing the Avengers, but yeah, I'll get it all up on Dakka eventually.
I'd like to have it all done by mid year, but I'm working full time + doing four university units externally this year. Hurts my free time.

Fortunately this is most of the troops. Here are the approximately six other things I've painted; apologies for the flash photgraphy, I just ran out of sunlight.

Here's the Warlock I've been using as a Farseer - the first Eldar model I ever painted!

Here are the five Fire Dragons I mentioned; they've been living in my car lately, and I've been painting them during breaks while at work (which involves driving, waiting, pulling apart laptops, and more driving). The one with the brown rim on the base was the original - I think I've done a pretty good job making the others look the same so far. Not that you can tell with the flash. The paintjob is slightly... chunkier, due to the heat in my car, and the resulting misbehaviour of my paint.

Nice theme, although I see that the DA's are based with different materials, giving them a bit of height. Any particular reason for that?

Also, besides the different weapons, how are you going to differentiate your Dragons from your Avengers or other models like Guardians? I'd suggest the classic sashimono-style back banner, maybe sculpted in different shapes for different squads?

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

I love the Wood Eldar idea and the colour scheme. I'm also painting up some Dire Avengers but i've used the standard colour scheme and I only have 10. Anyways I'm just onto the exarch and the rest just need to be based. Good luck with your Avengers

You've just got to love the Space Elves

It should be fine. DAs are predominantly green with yellow sashes.

FDs are Scorched Brown / Dark Flesh / Bestial/Snakebite, with only green guns, and red Spirit Stones running up the helmets should make it simple enough. Bright yellow gun barrels too.

... Guardians?
Maybe one day. They don't really suit Wood Eldar tactics.

The resin bases are not for a height advantage, don't worry. They just look cool. I'd have put the Fire Dragons on them too if it wasn't such a pain with slottabases.

Excellent stuff man, I can never get myself in the proper mood for speed painting, but I salute those who can.

I like your color choices as well, the greens and browns are indeed very "wood elf"ish, and it works for you.

Ahhh so...

I hope that Pathfinders are on your list since Guardians aren't...

Also, are you planning to do the WE Dryads as Wraithguard? I thought about it, but they just didn't fit the theme of my exodites.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I'm not afraid to say this is a cheesy army. This initial 1750 point build is 30 Dire Avengers, 10 Fire Dragons, 2 Farseers and 6-7 Grav-Tanks.

See? This list has changed a little since then, but it's the same model composition.

Once I get these done I'll, ah... 'branch out,' so to speak. But I'm determined not to actually replace any Eldar models with Wood Elves - the Dryads as Wraithguard is a great idea (definitely cheaper!) but I'm deliberately avoiding too much elfiness. It's hard enough to uphold my 'I hate Elves' standpoint with Eldar on the table, but I can at least table anyone who challeges me on it. Dryads are sufficiently not-elves for me to consider it, but then I'd have to give them guns... get rid of their stupid faces, stud them with spirit stones, make the look a little more wraith-bone-y...

Your list looks like fun, I love the DA "spam" idea. I agree that two farseers really makes the list when you're Dooming two units and Bladestorming the Avengers. That's like 58 shots with rerolls on the wound... devastating!

However, a unit of 5 Pathfinders are great backup for them and can help with taking out TMC, sitting on objectives or sniping from cover. Just make sure that you keep some Storm Guardians or a small unit of DA's w/ shimmershield and defend nearby to counter deepstrikers or side-board infiltrators.

I've been wondering what I could use as w-guard in my exodite list. I'd like to use them as a troop selection, but I certainly don't have $100 USD for the 10 models... pricey that for a troop selection.

BTW, why the elf-hate? There's no reason not to love those tree-hugging, daisy-eating, androgynous pansies...

Well, that stage took four days, but I was busy this week.

Today I can start on some details. No pictures yet, but I'll post once I've got a few with the basic details done. Over half-way through my time limit now!

Alright, this is the stage I'm up to... Iyanden Darksun on hip-sash, headcrests, cords and wrist-foot things. I HOPE I finish this stage tomorrow. Dwarf Bronze on clips and icons. Note mostly finished DA for comparison. Sorry about green background, sort of throws everything off....

WOW! I found an Italian imported wine that comes in a 1.5 litre bottle... for just over $10!!!

Glug. Can't remember brand, the bottle is now in recycling bin. I used some of it in a garlic sauce with choy sum and honey, to accompany chicken thigh fillets (I'm a better cook than all of ya!)...

Ahem...

Day the Eighteenth.
All of the yellows and bronze parts have been painted in, and I've done Snakebite Leather on the faces of Squadron B. After I get that done on another fifteen I think I'll move onto the basing. I'd like to highlight the greens a little more before I go on to the inking stage. Must remember to apply Bleached Bone to the barrel sort of bit that runs along the top of the shuricats first.... before the Flesh Wash goes down. Sorry about lack of pictures, but I'm pretty drunk and about to hit the soft thing with pillows.

G'night all... 12 days left and I'm out of weekend again! Aaargh!!!

Day the Nineteenth

Scorched Brown on the relevant parts of the base, Snakebite Leather on their dumb little faces. Applying Bleached Bone to the catapult barrels (not yet started in topdown shot, but now applied to all of Group B) tonight, and will hopefully get all of that all done before Bush leaves office (and update a few hours later, it's done).

Click below for a 3072x2304 zoomable image in the gallery!

I'm still postponing the ink - I want to get the bases drybrushed grey first, so I can clean up any foot-smears. They still need a little highlighting before the ink stage though. Still making good time!

Day the Twentieth.
Quick update, not much to report. Did two layers of grey on all of the bases this afternoon, just fortress grey to go, then Bestial Brown on the dirt.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Day the Twenty-Third.
Didn't do much for a couple days, but spent this afternoon finishing the bases (okay, they still need a light brush of snakebite, snakebite around the base edges, and static grass) and finishing Green Stage 3 (only gobbo green hardlines/highlights and a couple dots of bilious green on spirit stones to go). I went over and Cleaned up the browns that got other colours accidently dotted on whilst doing details / greens. I could probably knock most of this over this weekend, and will be trying to get as much as I can done!

WIP shot tomorrow; completed shot will be posted next Saturday.

Thanks for the comment, Gavin. I had a quintuple-post going there.

Here are photos of squads so far:

I gave the bases their light going-over with Snakebite, and then decided to treat them to a Devlan Mud wash.

The resin scenic bases were provided by Back-2-Base-ix. $6.10 AUD (about $4 USD ATM) for ten.

Looking really good! I love the bases. What do you use for the rocks? They do have a woodlands feel to them. You will have to give us a report with pictures when you play your first game with them. Nice work.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

LAST DAY ALERT!

It's still technically Friday afternoon in the US (although it's probably dark by now since it's winter), and it's about 2215 in the UK. However, here in Australia it's very much 0910 Saturday morning, 31/01/09. I'm supposed to have this finished by now, but I've been very, very busy this week...

I've still got all day though. All day and nine hours and the brits and yanks would't even notice I'd missed my deadline. But in all seriousness, today I will be painting. Music on the stereo, Supreme Commander replays on the computer (so Dakka doesn't distract me), and probably some stand-up comedy on the notebook nearby, to set the atmosphere. I've eaten breakfast, shaken off a mild hangover, and taken the girlfriend to work. I've got my paints in front of me, a couple new brushes... The weather is surprisingly mild... and I'm confident to jinx it with a good old:

NOTHING CAN GO WRONG!!!

I've done the green ink, just got to finish off the flesh inking, flesh highlighting, yellow highlights, and miscellaneous details as I get to them. I'm going to do the last flesh layer first to avoid unnecessary blending later on, and then just finish the models ONE AT A TIME so I don't phase out and miss important details in my usual production-line-attention-disorder.

Then I get to put some static grass on the bases, if I can find the bloody stuff... I've got a big bag somewhere and several containers with lesser amounts. I should be alright.

Don't be afraid to leave messages of encouragement in my absence, but I really can't have Dakka open for the next few hours. Pics tonight.
