I have used bullets for things before with no bad side effects. No small children or animals were harmed in the making of these models (well, not many, anyway.

)
I used a batch of .22LR slugs (JUST the projectile - not the case or charge or anything that would go bang.) as the missile loads in a 1/72 scale battlemech (actually a metal/plastic die-cast robotech thing.
BT name was "archer", but the missile racks were empty when I got it.) I made up a frame that would hold the slugs and epoxied them in place. It worked well.
I've also used a USED (as in already fired, expended and safe) .38sp casing with the primer (fired) removed and resulting hole patched in a vindicator conversion (as the back end of the round being loaded into the gun).
However, ALL of these parts came courtesy of a mate who was a firearms instructor and reloader. I did not attempt to remove slugs from live ammunition (although I do know how to safely).
There are, however, safer and easier ways to do it. Go to a model store and look at the rockets/bombs and missiles.
