It doesn't hit me as an outright racist statement; I read that and saw social commentary before racism, but it definetaly can be construed the other way around. Oh well.

Dakka. You need more of it. No exceptions.

I have to say... I agree with shuma..... I too say racial jokes, I call my brothers down right racist names. But Im not a racist person at all. I love black comedians simply because when they bash white people it makes laugh. In that context it is totally fine to say things like that. If I were standing in the line at the DMV and some black dude started talking to me like that Id get pissed and words would be said. Really it comes down to, IMO, a time and place for it type deal

Comedy can be a way to air topics which are repressed in general social life. For example, Billy Connolly did a series of jokes about colostomy bags, which while horrifying were reportedly found therapeutic for colon cancer sufferers.

Other such topics include sex, death, scatology, in-laws, the government, rich people and racism.

However there is a difference between making jokes about racism and making racist jokes.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

And it really is a fine line to tread. In this day and age people are so overly sensitive about so many things. And believe me I dont mean this in any kind of racist way just an observation about human mentality. I am sure everyone has noticed it is considered acceptable for anyone who is not a straight white male to freely throw racist slurs around like nothing is the matter. It is rather amusing to me actually, it wouldn't matter how jokingly he did it, or how against racism his comments were, if a normal average white male uttered a racist word he would be outcast immediately. It is actually one of the most stereotyped and bigoted outlooks in the world- "if he says it he must be racist because he is a white guy".

I'm straight white male and I got into a thing about guidos about an hour ago. It's context, which is what racists and idiot apologists don't understand. The method by which a word is used is far more important than the word itself.

But maybe you'll understand that when you grow up. Or you won't and you'll vote social conservative.

My point Shuma was that people overreact because they don't take context into account, they simply here a person say a word and immediately make an assumption about the persons character. And what does my age have to do with understanding? The most immature person is the one who believes they don't have anymore growing up to do. I am sure I will be learning new things and growing up to the day I die.

It's the way you toss around the persecution complex of the token white male. It speaks to a severe lack of world experience. If a normal average white male uttered a racist word, he would be a normal average white male. The world would keep spinning.

I think you are over analyzing my examples. I am not trying to say that white males are persecuted either. I am simply trying to point out that a word from one persons mouth may be deemed acceptable to the public eye, but from another persons mouth it could be taboo.

Racism in America is the reason I don't bother with the headset on xbox live. Honestly, do you guys punish racists by putting them on there? Or are there really that many?

Live is pretty bad. But it functions much like a forum give someone a voice with much less in the repercussion department and they are bound to says things simply trying to get a rise out of people.

K, logical I guess. But it's funny how i don't hear many of my british counterparts touting the same words in an argument on xbox live.

Funny, like every player from the UK i've ever played has been a foul mouthed racist. I just figured everyone on live spoke that way.

Cognitive dissonance. You don't hear it because you don't hold the belief that your countrymen are unusually racist.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

No it's just the times I get called a "dirty jew" over xbox live aren't usually times I hear a British accent in sync with the same line.

Yep. That would be cognitive dissonance. You only hear the slurs that offend you. And only slurs said in a non-English accent offend you.
