Dawkins is just a symptom of a larger problem within the Christian community. The Christian movement, and in particular the evangelical movement have allowed their fringe element to become their public face which has created a negative perception of Christianity (also marrying themselves to a political movement didn't help) and marginalized many more moderate Christians.

Which is itself one of many ways in which the new ubiquity of media has caused a great many people to believe a great many rather crazy perspectives on life are far more ubiquitous than they really are.

That said, there really are a lot of fundamentalist Christians in the world, and far more people who are sympathetic to their cause. There is this crazy assumption by a lot of the more vocal social progressives that their position is clearly the right one, and that it is based on fewer (and less grandiose) assumptions than the conservative position. This just isn't so.

For large chunks of the United States, and the world really, things like gay marriage are not immediately presumed to be morally virtuous. Yeah, guys like Jerry Falwell are caricatures (and they work on TV only because of that fact) but their views are not nearly as far from the mainstream as might be believed. The difference is that, unlike more run-of-the-mill moralists, guys like Falwell truly believe that hate in the name of virtue is no vice. Sadly, this opinion is shared by most of the more vocal advocates on the Atheist/Progressive/Liberal end of the spectrum (exe. Hitches, and occasionally Harris).

BloodofOrks wrote:
Hopefully in the next decade we will see Christians rejecting more extreme leaders and getting back to actually working to make the world a better place. Seeing as my Dad will be working as a Priest in the next decade, I can only hope for the best.

I hope for better as well. Sadly, at the moment, both sides are becoming increasingly militant, rather than less so. I think a lot of progress hangs on the economic crisis. If the Democrats can pull off/claim responsibility for a recovery, then I would expect the resultant trust to ease the ire of most of the moderate voters in the nation.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

Nope. Me too.

Here's an article I wrote about the decline of British pop music in the 'noughties' that won me ROTD Student Music Writer of the Year.

Your faith in those things being illusions is no different than their belief in them and your absolutism in your belief is no different than theirs. On a personal level it started well and ended badly- started off graduating college and then university, meeting and marrying my soon to be wife, the birth of my firstborn son, but ended with a divorce, no access to my son, a nasty period of unemployment and a poky room in a filthy house with criminal housemates.

I live in hope that the very end of the decade will be the springboard to a much better next one and with a good job and a place of my own again things are almost in place....

But in terms of music and culture. Nu-metal at the start, and reality tv, reality celebrity culture, retro fashions that seemed to show a society desperate to be in any decade but this one... some really depressing things there!

Well the 00s for me started on a pretty terrible note. My long-time girl friend broke up with me in late 2000, I was a temp and then just as things were getting back in place came September 11th. Honestly I was deeply depressed about that for a solid year.

Since then I've finished grad school, started a new career I love, spent 2 years in the Caribbean and now finishing 2 years in China. And bought a place, and met a great girl.

But for my country and the world...

Bush's 'election'
Bush's war
Bush's reelection AFTER Abu Grahib broke!
Katrina
Financial crisis
Climate change

Geeze.

The future scares me.

I wonder if this is what 1929 or 1939 felt like.

Its been a boon for us here in Brisbane.... now the drought is broken, we've had 2 mild summers, 2 cold (for Brisbane) winters, heaps of rain this year.
Fewer mosquitos, the canetoads have dropped in numbers and to top it all off world temperature went down by 0.6 of a degree last year after being essentially flat for the last 5.

Also I made a killing on European carbon creditspre financial crash.

Agreed. The only thing more pointless than trying to argue with someone who lets a cult from the stone age do his thinking for him is perhaps trying to hack through the varying opinions about the 5th edition wound allocation rules. I'm out.

I know man.

"I.. I know my time has come" Tethesis said with a gasp, a torrent of blood flowing from his lips.
"No! Hang on brother!!" Altharius could feel the warmth slip away from his dear sibling's hands

Tethesis's reached out his bloodied arm to Altharius's face.
"I..I have one final request"
Altharius leaned close to listen, tears welling in his once bright eyes.
"make sure th..they put my soulstone in a tank... it'll be... real fethin' cool"
"Yes, you're gonna be the most fethin' cool tank!!" burning hot tears streaked down Altharius's face, as he held his brother's soul in his grasp.

The 2000's kicked ass, they were just setting up for the better 2010's when we get the benefits of the 2000s.

The 2000's will be good when we get to the 2020's and we can finally turn the globe into a massive superhero battle FAA, City of Heroes/ Villians style. Until then the iPhone is pretty cool.

There have definately been some blows, Terry Pratchet's illness and the invention of Kotaku, for example but Steve Jobs, Charles Petzold and company are all still around. Don't forget the epic battle of Facebook vs MySpace and DARE I SAY IT ...

A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!

Well next year is 2010 and I have a feeling things might improve, with the every other decade thing.

The 1960's: I wasn't around but I probably wouldn't enjoy myself what with the lack of Warhammer, D&D and death metal.
The 1970's: D&D kicks off, good music starts to happen and afros.
The 1980's: Pretty lame except for the Bay Area Thrash scene.
The 1990's: Grunge music, nuff said.
The 2000's: The worst to date with all the emos and scene kids with their crappy music and stupid sideways photos. I'm gonna celebrate when this fad is over.
The 2010's: Will hopefully be much better.

That's because change in music is the only thing to have far reaching and long term affects to societies. I mean who even remembers that 9/11, Pearl Harbor, or Vietnam stuff?

People only talk about the serious, important stuff, after all.
