sebster wrote:Because 'left wingers hate authority' is a silly generalisation, with absolutely no value in politcal commentary at any level. The 'left wing' is very diverse, for every anarchist campaigning for the end of the ruling class, there's a economic authoritarian arguing for state control of major assets. The idea that 'the left' is some uniform political movement that can be given as broad a description as 'hates authority' is very, very silly.
Yep. "Left-wing" is an extremely vague term, almost to the point of uselessness. Look at people saying that Hitler and Stalin were complete opposites, when their policies were far closer to each others than they were to, say, those of Bill Clinton (fairly "centrist" overall).
It's about as silly as saying they all want to make fried food illegal.
Hey, I didn't say that.
I've also seen people claim all kinds of qualifications they obviously didn't have; PHDs in history when they couldn't form sentences, I saw one guy claim a degree in middle eastern studies that kept saying Iran was an Arab nation. Just all false appeals to authority. I guess if someone feels they 'know' something to be true, they don't really care how they get someone else to believe it. Or something, at the end of the day it's the internet and you just expect other people are going to be ridiculous.
I pretty much ignore claims of degrees on the internet for this reason. On the internet, everyone has a PhD in whatever's being discussed.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.
Kind of reminds of an argument between Captain Rands and The Lummox.
Lummox was a natural born gobshite. You name it, he'd make it up. This particular incident, was when Lummox (who fits the bill. Tall, obese, highly questionable hygiene) claimed he was going to Sandhurst to do Officer training of some kind. Due to his vast bulk, he was ridiculed for such a blatantly outrageous lie. He would never survive basic training.
Capt. Rands was joining in. So Lummox claims the role he will be doing doesn't require basic training, blahblahblah.
Long story short, turns out he has described the Captains role in the Military to a tee, and is STILL arguing the toss.
But hey, Lefties quite like authority. Dunno where you got the hating it bit from.

There actually are a few positions in the military that don't require any basic training, but I'm pretty sure they're restricted to the direct commissioning of professionals (chaplains, JAG lawyers, and Doctors).

Edited for absolutely no reason at all. Well, maybe for the lulz.

I don't think Librarians would like the comparison to Lawyers, unless they have turned to Chaos, then they might be proud of the comparison.

How in the name of nine fething hells did the title of this thread suck me in? I feel like the hippie facing the nun in the graveyard, who just tore off her disguise and said "Ha ha! I'm the bus driver!"

I can't believe I know what that's in reference too.

Yeah, left wing, like right wing, is alright for a descriptor if you're talking about politics at the most general level, and not about the politics of individuals. It's sensible, for instance, to say that left wing values are more common in the city than right wing values. Any more detail and you get into trouble with the variety of left wing and right wing views.
Hey, I didn't say that.
Yeah, that was a bit cheeky on my part

In a way, the fact that nobody knows anyone else's qualifications is a good thing. Appeal to authority is too often used by people to win an argument by default, and with everyone on the internet having a PHD in google, at least here there's a strong motivation to look up what people are saying to see if it matches reality.
“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Commander in chief ?
The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
