I'm probably just making an ass of myself here, but I can't bear it (ha ha).... ....Penguins and Polar bears live on opposite sides of the earth. Still sounds like a fun game. Great job on the Daemons, especially the Tzneetchi ones.

Not for long. The polar bears are riding the melting glaciers south in search of penguin-steaks.

Hey, I've seen these models around! Great to see you are a painting fiend Redbeard!

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

How on Earth are you painting 40+ models in a single day and?? And they don't look like crap like mine would if I painted that many in such a short time, they actually look really good!!

This means you have to take a break and share speed painting secrets.

Fair enough.

Here's how I did it - plaguebearer edition.

First. And, this is important. Get a 1/4" drill bit, and a piece of plywood with about 3 square feet of space on it. Drill as many holes about 1" to 2" apart as you can in it. Put this aside, we'll get back to it later.

Do guys in batches of 20.

Cut the slotta-base off the model, and drill a hole into a foot. You'll use this to pin the model to the base eventually, but for now, make the pin really long.

Prime models white. Then airbrush them their base colour. I used foundation paints for this, to make it even easier to get coverage (the three new units; khemri brown, knarloc green, gretchin green) This means you can basecoat all 20 guys in under 15 minutes.

Next, have a plan for how to tackle the colours, and the order you're going to do it in.

Colourwise, I stuck to foundation paints, partially because the muted colours rock for nurgle, but also because you get good coverage in one brush.

Second, have a good selection of larger brushes. Most important part here: Get some Filbert brushes.

Filbert brushes rock for speed painting. They hold a lot of paint, so there isn't a lot of brush dipping compared to painting. They have a wide edge and a narrow edge, so you can use the same brush to cover big swathes of model, and then turn it sideways to hit smaller details. I used a 4, a 2, and a 0 Filbert for a lot of the work.

Right, so we have that down. Now, paint in the right order so you don't have to ever have to re-paint something you already did. This is partially a trick, but also a skill that requires practice. I've been painting minis for nearly 30 years now, and brush control makes a big difference in how fast you can do big groups of guys. The more often you go back to correct a mistake, the longer it takes.

Anyhow, back to the steps;

Drybrush whole model in a slightly lighter shade that the basecoat.
Use Machrite Red for mouths.
Use Solar Macharius Orange for holes in the flesh.
Use Dheneb Stone for bones, horns, nails, and teeth. (You do this after the last step so that you can just go over the red and orange that will get on the teeth and bones).
Use Iyanden Dark Sun for eyes.
Use Calthan Brown for the wooden sword handles.
Use Adeptus Battlegray for the metal.
Stipple Vermin Brown and Blazing Orange over the metals.
Do the extras on the squad leader, banner guy and musician. And don't forget that one of the sculpts has a nurgling at his feet, so do that a different colour than the guy

Ok, done painting. Now, go down to the basement with your powerdrill and a large can of walnut woodstain (this is, by the way, exactly what 'Armypainter' sells. But they sell a small can for $30, while you can pick up a quarter-gallon at the hardware store for $8...)

Remember the long pins. Put that in the drill chuck, dip the guy in the wood stain, put it in an enclosed box, and spin on high for 30 seconds.

Take guy out of drill using pliars to grab the pin, and put him in the prepared pegboard, from way back in step one. Leave him to dry for 24 hours.

This will leave you with very shiny guys, so next, get your handy can of Krylon Matte Varnish, and spray them, to kill the shine.

Bases:
I bought resin bases. Painting them is pretty easy - starting with a Dark Angels Green spraycan that I had lying around. Use foundation paints to do the dirt, and bubble surfaces. Take your guys, trim the pin in the base to a reasonable size, and pin them to the pre-painted bases.

Ta Da, done. Meanwhile, you should be working on the next unit while steps for this unit are drying

Really impressive stuff Redbeard. I assume you know that at the end of the year you're going to have to take the one big 'glory' photo of everything you've painted in one year...?

I thought you might be using the "dip" method but the guys looked too good (probably the powerdrill for 30 seconds getting rid of the excess dip I see on so many models). I think I need to invest in an airbrush to further speed up the process.

That's exactly it. I first tried just shaking them, but the dip is too viscous and ended up really thick in places. Giving them a good spin makes all the difference.

I use a dowel and just spin them by hand but I'll give a power drill a shot.

My drill is running @1350 RPM. I doubt that hand-spinning can match that. The only thing is you need to make sure you get the pin at the center of balance on the model, because at that speed, if you don't, the pin will bend due to uneven centrifugal forces, and the model can go flying off. (Ask me how I know this...)

Eek! Talk about speed painting, I tend to labour for hours over a single model... (damn perfectionism) and you get a result just as good at a tiny fraction of the time.
Awsome!!!

When you call an intimate moment with your partner "the Assault Phase"

Is that followed by a pile-in move?

That brings a whole new meaning to the term "Hit and Run"

Can that be following a deep strike, or do you have to wait until the next round?

Part of the difficulty in painting 520 models in a year is having 520 models to paint.

I just got a good deal on some more wraithguard for my eldar army, though, so I did them.

New total: 495, 25 to go.

I wish I had that sort of trouble getting 520 models

(I mean, realistically, I probably have much less, but my wallet disagrees)

Fancy demons?

Six more down; some Sternguard for SparkeyG's Ultramarine army. Some of these are the old Tyranic War Veterans, which are pretty cool models.

New total, 501, 19 to go Cracked 500, the end is in sight!!!

How do you know this? (You told someone to ask and noone else did, so I thought I would be "that guy")

In all seriousness, the painting you do is amazing! I am very new to the hobby and chose Orks as my first army. As such, I have boatloads of boys to paint. I have found that painting in batches makes the painting go by much quicker (as you stated earlier).

It appears that you will have no problem meeting the 520 challenge.

Kudos!

It's been a month since my last update. I kind of slacked off this last month, only finishing eight more models...

I painted Squeek, the rat, for a contest at GW's Chicago Bunker:

I did a second Tzeentch Chariot:

I painted the new Blood Slaughterer model:

As well as the new Plague Hulk:

I painted a Squiggoth that my wife got me:

And I painted three Catachan Heros, for SparkeyG's son's Birthday.

That means there are four to go. Hopefully, they'll all be impressive. I've got a FW Keeper on my desk, and a Tzeentch Keeper on order. Hopefully it comes in with time to do it justice and still finish the 520.
