Me and a few friends were at GW Belfast last Friday night and were hoping to make this a more regular occurrence for much-needed practice for Q con it would be good if we could organize amongst ourselves some time to meet up.

Which in turn avoids the crush of Thursday's as kids generally become very annoying don't get me wrong I'm not biased but there's a time and place for everything and Friday nights seemed to be relatively quiet and I'm sure the store could do with much-needed business at this time so who's up for it

Hey folks...

I'm from the Dragonslayers.

Just wanted to let people know info for 40K at our weekly meetings and Q-Con:

We have 40k every Tuesday and some Saturdays in the QUB Student's Union, with 2 giant boxes of scenery, beginner armies available to borrow and as many tables as you want. Club web site is www.dragonslayers.org.uk. Unfortunately, we do have to restrict attendance to 17 and older. If you want to join, just come along and ask for "someone in charge", if there is such a thing...

Q-Con will have tournaments in quite a few tabletop games, including 40K, Babylon 5, DBM... There will be really good prizes (full army boxes etc.) which are well worth the entry price, but specific details of these are not finalised yet. If you are interested in Q-Con, you should check out www.q-con.org.uk and don't forget to pre-register because we may have to cap attendance.

Thanks,
Loquerion

Ps. If you are interested in other forms of gaming, we have everything under the sun, and are always happy to try out new games...

Yeah if you guys are gonna practise for Q-Con you may as well check Dragonslayers out. Slayers do run Q-Con after all. I've had my first game of 40K there recently and can attest that they are 40K n00b friendly! There are generally a good number of players there and two gaming tables set up. Been going to DS a while now and they have always had a good amount of scenery.

I think Replay in Bangor run a gaming club on Saturdays for the Bangor people. But Replay have some discontinued 40K stock, so its worth a wee look to see if you can find any gems. I got an old school chaos space marine lord there! For the Plague Father! hehe

Hopefully this year's tournament can build on the success of last year, Although signing up at the minute isn't exactly brilliant with only 11 people so far but I'm sure in time things will pick up.

It's good to see them incorporated this into their activities it has never really been a strong point in the past bearing in mind that games workshop only got involved for the first time last year organizing the tournament and it seems that Q con are only too eager for this to happen, Which fills much-needed space at the event on the day it will be interesting to see how well fantasy is supported.

Well, Games Workshop's involvement in Q-Con this year and last is mainly due to a shift in policy overall with regard to the company and local scene. They are now far more involved in getting into local tournaments and community stuff; and it's definitely worth approaching them if you want to run any events of this nature - The expertise, support and tournament logistics they can provide is difficult to find elsewhere.

As to filling space at Q-Con, it is a genuine point - Space is finite and at 850 attendees it's getting tight to fit everyone into the building with enough stuff to keep everyone ammused... but one complaint we are proud of is that there is always so much to do that people have a hard time fitting it all in to one weekend.

We do have a brand new venue which I don't think you've seen since the last time you were at the event. It's got about 4x the space, but it is spread among 4 floors - This is a good thing though, because it means we can segregate different gaming types (to avoid noise and interruption), but still keep the strength of the single event.

Ultimately though, we run the event to cater to the gaming community of Belfast, no matter what games they want to play. Whatever the popular games are - We'll always support and run them, but if you don't see something you think would be good, or want to run something yourself (like a tournament or a one of), then look for game submissions on the web site - We are always happy to see this kind of support.

Don't get me wrong we are very lucky for Q con, but it needs to be said it is a cash cow for slayers in general . I do not object against that so of course it's going to be in their interest to try and cater for everything and everybody. which is good as in the past Q con lost its way at less than that needed to be learned very quickly. Hence everything everybody seems to be the policy now.

Northern Ireland is its own worst enemy in regards to our hobby, with the lack of activities now with games workshop getting involved, but be under no doubt it's still a cash cow to them as well. Which is the way it should be because after all their a business or at least they hope to be. Unofficially it's unofficial Northern Ireland GT and we'll be there just like last year to reclaim the title or at least just to take part would be good enough for me. Hopefully I shall see use all their

Q-Con is not a profit making event for Dragonslayers. It is a major loss making event for Dragonslayers.

Q-Con charges £10 entry for the whole weekend (3 Days), and £1 entry to secure a place in some competition games (to stop people taking spaces
in a prize winning game, then not playing). This makes Q-Con to our knowledge the least expensive weekend games convention in the entire of Ireland or the UK.

After all income is is accounted for (ticket sales, competition entry, exhibition stall hire) - It costs another £3000 MORE on top to run the event...

That £3000 is generated by fund raising throughout the year by Dragonslayers' members (24 Hour Gaming Nights, Monthly Club Nights, Corporate Entertainment Services).

Q-Con is planned, organised, set-up and run entirely by volunteers. Most of them students in QUB.

We don't run Q-Con to make money, we do it because we love games.

If slayers does not generate money for slayers then it's not organized very well and for what I see that's not the case.

As stated above we are very lucky to have Q con it's the only convention of its type in the country and the work that's done in and behind-the-scenes by everyone involved shows much dedication and credit but as always money is money after all and Q con as a whole generates thousands, 850 multiplied 10 you do the math.

Q-Con is exceptionally well organised. It is better organised than many of the profit making conventions.

It doesn't make a profit, because we don't want it to. We keep the ticket price to a bare minimum - We haven't increased in it 6 years!

In our experience the line between doing something because you love it, and doing something to make profit is a fairly thick one - Especially in the gaming community. I have a huge amount of respect for people who can successfully merge their passion for gaming and their career (GW, Replay, PONG, The Stack, Etc.), but I don't envy them. It may be a wide line between passion and business, but this makes it an extremely difficult one to straddle. Especially when the need to turn a profit becomes more important than the gamers and the games... This can result in loss of faith and harm to the whole community.

I know Q-Con could be run at a profit. It could present a full time career for one or two people, but it would not be better for it. The need to make money would tarnish the event, and the event experience would suffer as a whole.

So again -
Q-Con is not a profit making event for Dragonslayers. We don't run Q-Con to make money, we do it because we love games. This is one of the major strengths which Irish conventions have over many UK profit making events. They're done for the love of the games, not for the love of the £££s.

p.s whats the min age for qcon

Q-Con doesn't have an age limit in the same way the weekly Dragonslayers meetings do. Some restrictions do apply though.

If you are under 18 you can not take part in the Saturday night activities (pub quiz, disco/club/bar, 18+ rated Screenings), and can not use the bar facilities. All other events however are open to all (there are some guidelines for CosPlay activities and photography, but check the web site for specifics).

If you are under 12 you must be accompanied by a legal guardian at all times. Guardians must be over the age of 21 and only one guardian can be permitted per child under 12. Guardian passes are available upon registration for no extra cost, but guardians can not take part in any gaming activities. This is enforced strictly to prevent abuse.

Look forward to seeing you there

Obviously its better to have GW games supported as opposed to unsupported at Q-Con. GW games have been played since at least Q-Con VII, so from my perspective they always have been incorporated. What you state as, "never really been a strong point" is burgeoning now. So the support given, regardless of what you make of it, has been worthwhile.

The facts speak for themselves space hull has been played for years at the convention by a few individuals nothing than a couple of demo games here and there nothing on the scale of a tournament, there was no one to organize it until games workshop got involved even in the days of noel being the manager, then with his counterpart Steve they had no ambition to establish the tournament scene locally, And compared to the conventions in the Republic which has had an active tournament scene for years.

Ask yourself the question why because games workshop couldn't be bothered for years surely everyone would have to agree, considering the store in Belfast has been open more than 10 years. So we are now at a crossroads, time will tell. But then days glad to see long since gone everyone has a responsibility to support an event such as Q con for the greater good of all. And the convention itself is only eager to see this happen that's all the facts that I am saying.

So of course not much time left for everyone to get their armies up to standard!!

But your facts are wrong! There have been (at least) two Space Hulk tournaments prior to Q-Con XIII, not just demo games. I know because I played in them. I'm not going to deny that support and interest in the GW games at Q-Con has jumped significantly over the past three years. But my point was that it was good that the GW support prior to Q-Con XIII was there. It provided a basis for everything to happen after it. To the best of my knowledge both Replay and GW teamed up at Q-Con XIII to bring the first set of proper tournaments to Q-Con. But prior to that, if you thought the GW tournaments at Q-Con lacked the bottom line is that you did nothing constructive to improve it. Please take anything else you want to say to PMs.

Not sure what you mean by this considering there was nothing there to contribute, ie (GW tournaments) we did support 100% last year, after all by speaking to the manager in Belfast I think he himself aspires for this event to turn into an official games workshop GT every year for both playing systems. And of course naturally we all have to play a part if we want such things to continue so try and be a little bit more positive. And the convention would be a perfect vehicle for them to achieve this so speaking in past tense doesn't really serve much purpose forward thinking and with that if supported the future looks very bright for us all.

so if people are going what armies are they bringing along lists etc. as stated is their interest to meet up in Belfast somewhere to get much-needed practice.
