Not to dispute the point, but why would sniper rifles bother Rough Riders more than Ogryn?

Snipers are generally in smaller units, so something like a 6 man pathfinder squad would probably lay two wounds on Ogryns. That doesn't dilute their hitting power at all, while the same thing would kill two RRs.

Thinking about combat effectiveness -- it'd be nice if Ogryns were as good as Assault Termies, but it's just not the case. Even on the charge, they get slaughtered pretty quick.

The real comparison, though, is going to be against horde armies. Six Ogryns will beat a mob of thirty Slugga Boyz, though it will take a while. Same is true for any relatively low-strength horde.

Consider, for example, fighting a big combined squad of Guard infantry. Lightning Claw Termies will kill around 1.3 Guard each per turn, Ogryns around 1.1 each. In return, it takes on average 36 Guard attacks to bring down a termie, and 54 to take out an Ogryn.

I stand by my theory that in 5th edition, IG don't need counter assault units anymore. three ogryn cost the same as 2.5 SWS with triple flamers....

If they're shooting at my Rough Riders and not my tanks, my heavy weapon squads, or my light vehicles, the Rough Riders have done their job and I'm playing a slow...

that's fine, but wouldn't you rather have a bullet magnet that also can shoot? Replace them with a HWS or another line squad if you don't want the actually combat punch.

they're only going to shoot your rough riders if they have a reason to be scared of them: if they have berzerkers, vanguard, sternguard, or other high price short range power armor.

Yeah I'm not so sure about that. With completely game breaking, unbalanced units out there like Nob Bikerz, a unit of Rough Riders could be extremely effective. Without sweeping advances any more, a speed bump like Rough Riders can give you an extra turn of shooting at a unit like that, which could mean the difference between winning and losing the game.
