funny seeing this board now, since cheese is cooling off with a suspension after multiple reports from people.

And I do.

And boy oh boy does he. Pages and pages of stupid people and misspelled signs. You don't think he got his astronomical post count by posting content did you?

That's right WG, I said it! What are you gonna do, ban me?!

I'm not a big fan of that. I accept that I am using a free service and am subject to the terms of service, but parents are usually idiots. If you monitor your child's internet usage (which you should), and you see your kid going to a site you personally find offensive because of your beliefs, the site should not be responsible.

Working under the understanding that Dakka wants to have kids on the site, and wants to keep anything offensive away-that's cool, I abide by that. But I also know that means this site is somewhat fake to me, or at least I am somewhat fake on the site. I'm not suggesting we start talking about religion to see how many people we can offend. The point is that if you are here, you are here for a hobby. I've learned a lot, seen some great work, and also get great inspiration from using Dakka, and that is what makes me think twice about any post. There are countless times when I write a post and decide to not post it because it doesn't add anything to the conversation. I think that is where people go wrong.

I disagree with many things people say, but unless it is topical, or has to do with the hobby-I try not to post it. I've never gotten a warning-so I must be doing something right! I do like that similar statement in which you ask yourself if you would do this if your parents were present. That still works for me and I'm 30.

There is a difference between posting appropriately and not posting appropriately.

The latter usually involves spaming, flaming or trolling threads for no reason other than to annoy other members or using profanity etc.

Strong view points and robust discussion have always been a strong point for dakka, but kids do read this stuff and Russ and then yakface have asked that things are kept to a modicum of decorum.

@ Ozymandis... be glad it is in 1 thread.

And beware the coming of Dakka Advice Dog, coming soon to the DCM forum.

Irony +1.

I can confirm (from my many sojourns with the mods) that DCM's don't get Preferential treatment. I admit I once did think that, but I realise now it's a load of rubbish.

However, I have found certain Mods to be a little too suspension happy, and it has directly reduced my desire to become a DCM.

@Gwar: Tell me that if many noobs posted in as... abrasive a style as you generally do, they would all get away with it?

I don't think there's any purposeful favoritism going on here. I think that no matter where you are, there is a small bit of subconscious favoritism, because people like/get familiar with certain things. It's kinda like that thing where in small churches a guy gets a girl pregnant, and the girl gets looked down upon and asked to leave, but the guy suffers nothing. I mean, it's not like he's pregnant. That example probably had nothing to do with anything.

I think that if a person were to post prolifically, and often in, well, let's just say a less than helpful and friendly manner it's more likely to get attention than a poster that posts rarely, and usually isn't being a jerk. I'm guessing the Mods rely more on user alerts than they do reading every single post.

As for actual favoritism, let somebody said, you don't know who is being given private warnings by Mods. It's possible that most people step out of line, get a warning, and go back to posting constructively.

And another thing.

I just got back from my suspension, and what the feth? I come back to a pile of posts bashing me for making a (really bad) joke about the marines?

You ever read the threads on religion that I've been involved in? You see the mockery I got for it? Did those people get suspended? Hell no.

I'm seeing favouritism towards quite a few unpleasant people here. Why am I being singled out? What have I done to anyone? I don't start flamewars or troll people intentionally.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

im neither a DCM nor a senior member.

i do get warnings, allthough, after an argument with a certain DCM (who im not going to name) the person was thrown off the site (for multiple offences)

Also, sometimes you just need to find the right mod.
some of them couldnt care less, allthough most of them are willing to help if you ask them, rather than making a thread about it to draw attention.
