I still disagree. In countrties where it is legal women tend to get the bad end of things. It would mostly effect poorer people doing what they have to for moneyI simply doubt there is enough oversight/protection for them all. It would be too hard to tell who was a legit and who is being forced to walk by dad/mom and so forth. The sex slave trade would be able to operated more freely. I can already see people saying this is my made/hooker on retainer, she can't speak engligh read or know where she is, but she can quit anytime....after her contract is up...and she has paid the expenses of moving here and room and board...ect.

We can't control half the crap we do, and IMHO it's just at little to open to abuse. Keep things at a few bordellos.

Surely most of these problems could be solved by legalizing, but only within licensed brothels? Randomly send someone round to check that best practise is being followed, no-one is being forced to work there, everyone has their test results and is over-age etc, and slap huge fines and remove licenses for infringements.

I think legalizing certain brothels (much like casinos) could work. But, I would up the penalties for going to a non-licensed prostitute. That would encourage people to go where you want.

In fact, since brothels and casinos both have a NIMBY (Not In My Back Yark) condition, maybe just roll them together at a single location.

I love the way that "certain types of people" totally miss the point on the vast array of social "problems" that we as a civilised and cultured society create to keep our selves amused.

Not one social problem can be solved with the stroke of a pen, or a few States / countries attempting to gain votes or status... they are very complex issues and YOUR disdain is the biggest problem.

Of course there are some in the industry who do not want to be there, of course there are some who are forced to be there, and surprise... there are some there because they love the power / money, and some don't have a clue what they are doing, and some just don't care... there are no majorities, only outside influences.

You have to change the way that children are brought up, you have to change how parents treat each other and their children, you have to change how criminal activities control areas of the industry, you have to change peoples attitudes to morals / drug use / self esteem, you have to change the Local / State / Federal governments reactions and knee jerk actions, but most of all... you have to change ALL the self righteous so called religious soul haters to even start.

You have to change all the sex slave trade that reaches from indonisia through africa and the middle east to ukraine. You'd have to regulate the flow of women who are coming to america to weed out the forced from the willing. Then get them to rag out thier pimps, then try and bring them to trial. I agree with several points in this thread. There's no reason for it to be illegal. Should be legal and regulated. If I remember right Canada's got this going on and do you hear anything bad about it?

Probably not, reason being: No one really cares all that much. It's only illegal because one person threw a fit and I think religion got involved at one point in it's history. There's also never been a reasonable argument against it, two people agree on a service method and payment, things happen. It's like any other transaction. Check some IDs, check some paperwork and you're set. Government taxes it, makes money. Only thing I really think that should be illegal outright is the majority of drugs. Look at the pharmaceutical companies. Make thing, tax thing, get money. If I were a government I'd be all over it.

It's not a rational debate, it's emotional... we, as good people always shy away from the things that we wouldn't do... for example: I don't want to be a fireman, so I think that those who are must be insane (they could get hurt).

With prostitution... ooo no I couldn't do that, they must be on drugs and being forced to do it.

Then steps in religion and the do gooders... then the government, eager for the votes, make laws... bingo... NOW it's anti social.

You seem to think that the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians had no religion. What you really mean is that the world somehow fell apart when Christianity and Islam came to power. What you are implying is that we've had 1,900 years of social regression. I'm not ignoring history as fact. I am pointing to it. In democratic civilizations, the desires of the many always outweigh the few. What has been discussed through this entire post are the amoral reasons why prostitution should/ should not be legal. Therein lies the problem, America is not amoral, the world is not amoral. There are ideas of right and wrong. Those ideas are rather subjective to each person pursuing the idea, but regardless there are things that are viewed acceptable and not acceptable. I think that many conservatives (not necessarily religious) argue that prostitution should be illegal because it cheapens sex and gives even more opportunity to the spread of STD's. From a more liberal standpoint (which is probably what I hold to, but I like being devils advocate), prostitution should be kept illegal because regulating it in a country the size of America would be very difficult. Regulating "working" conditions and how the workers are treated would be immensely more difficult.

Sorry for calling you a boob and fool. I disagree with your (seemingly) haphazard logic, but certainly respect your opinion and the issues you bring up.

I must admit that I am totally against the "business of religion" where the various 'churches' while soothing the brow of those that follow, instil THEIR will upon the masses... one could argue that indoctrination and mind setting were / are ongoing in "creating" majority values, while at the same time becoming very wealthy and powerful and whipping up frenzied outbursts and violence "in the name of God" (please insert religion and icons of your choice).

I also have done the Psych and Socio courses at University and have culminated in a Criminology degree, where issues such as prostitution and drug use abound.

I do not comment as a history buff, but as a subject consultant... and here, I do not have to be impartial... I give my professional AND personal opinion.

My personal commentary may be flawed, hey it's my life... but my professional opinion is fact... I must admit primarily for Australia, but we did also study the world stage in detail as well.

If you have any links to the articles that have provided some good insight, I'd like to read them. The US has had a lot of this discussed due to several of our politicians being implicated in prostitution scandals.

I think that blaming problems on "indoctrinating" religion is a bit of a cop out. No one forces religion on anyone else (at least here in america). Each person can be as open/ closed to religion as he/ she desires (childhood raising aside).

Prostitution as such isn't illegal in the UK. Various associated activities are illegal, such as living off immoral earnings, running a bawdy house, and so on.

Correct. Pimping etc are illegal, but it is Legal to sell sex personally.

Of Course this leads to what I think is a pretty good system, where the Pimps do get prosecuted, but individuals (technically) cannot be.

Technically, they were not selling themselves on the street. My friend said there were guys lined up and down the strip handing them out. You then called the number.

Would it make much of a difference? While there are plenty of places around the world where prostitution is still technically illegal, to my understanding discrete well run brothels are left alone by the police. Sure, streetwalkers and abusive pimps are imprisoned but I'm not that sure its a bad thing.

Basically, if prostitution were legalised for strongly regulated brothels, would the situation change much?
