Yeah, I'm not a big fan of either them or Wal-Mart.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Wal-Mart should stop being blue and instead be red.

Just to piss off Green Day.

If you don't know (or care) who Green Day is, and you don't shop at Wal-Mart, then it just doesn't matter!

This has nothing to do with walmrt being noble. This is only about money...and walmart trying to avoid a possible law suite that would follow. This started with an Evanessence CD years ago...that had some very small bit of bad language on it...the lady who got the CD from walmart sued for millions and won....saying something about how it was negative for her kid or something...and that the CD didnt have a parental advisory on it. Even though the Green Day CD does...From that point on Walmart never carried a CD that required that advisory.

I could be wrong but could it be that it was forcing Walmart to sell the Cds the way they were written or not all.

In which case they have the perfect right and my support.

It’s an interesting issue, whether a store has complete rights to sell whatever it wants and nothing else. Sure, they own the store and if people want stuff the store isn’t selling they can go elsewhere. But that often isn’t practical, in many cases there’s only one department store in town and if you choose to drive to the next town more often than not it’s owned by the same company.

Because there are plenty of times where the law has recognised that a store is not just a private business that can trade as freely as it likes. If you’re the only barber shop in town and you put up a ‘Whites only’ sign you better believe that’s gonna get ripped up real fast.

Now, I’m not suggesting a store should be forced every knickknack and bit of crap that someone might possibly want, but if a store has a near monopoly on trade in an area, I’m not convinced it is good enough to say ‘they can sell what they want with no obligation to the community at all’.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Mmm, even if Wal-Mart was doing this purely for ethical reasons (and they might be, I don't know) you have to limit words like noble to really impressive sacrifices and forgoing sales of a Green Day CD isn't going to impact Wal-Mart revenue all that much.

I mean, lets assume the new Green Day album is the biggest hit of the summer, one of the biggest album of all time, and sells 10 million copies. Let's assume Wal-Mart controls half of the CD sales in the US. Taking a profit per unit sold of $2, Wal-Mart would be giving up $10 million. Which seems like a lot, until you consider total Wal-Mart revenue is just a tick shy of $100 billion dollars.

When someone gives up 0.01% of their income out of principle, it's not really that much of a big deal. And then you have to remember Green Day's new album will sell nowhere near 10 million copies, Wal-Mart owns nothing like 50% of total music sales, and the Wal-Mart markup is unlikely to be anywhere near $2.

This is why I never buy from wal*mart.

The whole damn planet has a skewed sense of what censorship is. Greenday especially isn't out to offend people. Companies need to stop seeing black-and-white and realize there's a gray area Greenday fits into very well. Personally, I'm not a fan of Greenday at all, but screw wal*mart, they aren't bad guys.

I hate Wal-Mart, they are taking over the world.
I actually like the new Green Day cd, and their other works.
Wal-Mart can sell whatever they want. If they don't want to sell a cd, fine.
This story will only start giving more retailers the option to choose what they carry or not. Which will mean it'll be harder to find items when you need them.
So they should sell the cd to help me not have to look through 5 stores cd racks to find a cd.

I'll agree and say screw Walmart as soon as you understand the difference between censorship and free enterprise.

Censorship: Government Gmen stick electrodes on your for days on end and keep you in prison until they are bored or you die for writing that, and no you can't publish it.
Free Enterprise: Your great keystone work of art is absolute garbage and I'm not going to lose money because you're delusional. Peddle your wares somewhere else hippy! (ooh channeling Cartman again).

You should be supporting you local record shop anyway. Would you go buy your Warhammer stuff at Wal-mart (supposing they carried such) or you lgs? Local music stores are going out of business because everyone flocks to Wal-mart and Best Buy to pick up their cd's.

Of course, this whole discussion is useless. Everybody buys cd's off iTunes nowadays.

I don't have a LGS, so I would be happy to buy from Wal-Mart, which is on my way home from work. I have some very nice FGS but no LGS. My personal opinion on Green Day's complaint against Wal-Mart is them just trying to cash in on the media's coverage of them whining.

mcfly, I don't buy off iTunes (not keen with having to install intrusive software needlessly just to buy stuff from a store), but I do buy almost all my music on online, so close enough.

youngblood, I have no LRS either. I am lucky that I have a Used Book store in this area.

ASDA is part of the walmart group i believe
They sell every record there, doesent seem to be a problem with PA stickers slapped on records.

i dont see how it would annoy anyone though, the music is hardly fething playing in the store.
If any backwards stores out in the states sell decent music (hardcore, hardstyle, jumpstyle)

next time someone foes into a walmart in the US check for any CD's like hardcore heaven, hardcore extreme etc etc.
they have explicit lyrics in them, but no PA sticker

It's good that Green Day refuse to censor themselves, but to complain that stores won't sell it is wanting to have your cake and eat it.

That is basically my thought. I think that is great that they want to stick to their guns and refuse to create a clean version that Wal Mart will sell. They don't want to create a version that they feel will compromise their artwork. Perhaps it might encourage people to shop local stores. The idea that Wal Mart should "have to sell" their album is kind of immature though. The whole reason that we look at standing up for one's ideals is admirable is that it is hard to do sometimes. You have to expect to get dinged a bit.

All and all, its a non issue

I don't interpret Mike's words as "They should have to sell our art". I think he's saying "If they're going to sell a piece of art, they should do so without changing it."

oops, didn't get this far... but I agree with Envy..... at least sell BOTH. Let the consumer decide what version they want to buy. For the groups that won't let their music be censored... well within 10 years hardcopy music will be as dead as 8-track anyway.
