Why on Earth would it matter that it’s a conviction or not? Are you somehow assuming that someone can only be bigoted if they aren't really convinced about their bigoted opinion. I would have thought bigots would normally hold particularly stong convictions about their bigoted ideas.
Look, here it is. I don’t know if you’re a bigot or not, there’s a lot of reasons people end up opposing gay marriage and they’re not all bigoted. Michael Steele recently argued that gay marriage will result in higher insurance premiums for small businesses… so that isn’t a bigoted reason, just a stupid one.
But lots of people will naturally assume your opposition is a result of bigotry. This is, to some extent, a bigoted assumption and at least a little ironic. Gay folk the world over have had to learn with these kinds of unfair assumptions, and so will you.
