I never encountered disdain for wargaming when I was at school though I think the social aspect of school is more important at some schools that others. I get the impression that American high schools are far more cliquey, judgemental and win/lose orientated than British.

This kind of behaviour is fairly juvenile and pretty much fades by the time you get through university and get a proper job and stuff.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I've never been mocked for playing with little toy soldiers either, but that's because I don't really exist.

Well, it's probably more down to there being quite a few kids in school who played aswell. Nowadays most peoples reactions are 'you made and painted those? cool'.

I must admit that I always had the impression that the activity was 'nerdy' and something to be ashamed of without ever encountering anything against it, really.
The one occasion I remember anything happening was after we'd done a sort of- I suppose you'd call it a Show and Tell, thing but for the whole school and parents- thing about Warhammer. Shortly afterwards one kid in the playground laughed at one of our group with the words "What's that? Is it a Warhammer belt!? Haha!". No, it still doesn't make much sense to me either.
The problem is, apart from that episode we were never hugely overt about it, so I'm not sure if we didn't get any hassle because people didn't care or were more accepting, or they just didn't know.

That said, as an adult I've found that people just don't care, or they're interested, because every person has an interest or a hobby that has had snide comments made about it at some point or another. People have seemed to become quite open about things, and on the one occasion at my office where someone stood up, like the 'cool kid' at school, and tried to mock something 'geeky' that another person was talking about liking/doing, she was shouted down by people saying "grow up" and so on and so forth.

Wait wait , they didnt call anyone geeks , they called themselves geeks and nerds o_o ( the game group is around.... 28 - 40 age group )
they said that when i was quietly watching them play.
"feel free to pull up a chair , you dont have to stand there . wont guarantee watching bunch of old men doing geeky nerdy stuff wont bore you though"

this was when they were playing munchkins i think.

Ha! Munchkin is ace!

Luna's just reminded me of the Steve Jackson Fighting Fantasy books i used to collect when i was younger; I never got any grief for having those at school, although now i'd term them as slightly more nerdy than playing 40k.

No its just sort of unusual to hear people refer themselves as geeks and nerds for example when i was curious and decided to watch them play board games.
Like i said games arnt exactly favored only by the stereo typed geeks, everyone can be free to enjoy it right? Just find it weird why they think i wouldnt like it.

garret wrote:luna are you going to really try to rationalize human behavior?

I guess so , arnt you curious at all? I mean i still cannot understand why getting drunk / getting high and taking drugs is supposed to be fun or cool.

Well, I never understood part of it myself. It's cool to play GTA4 and other video games, but not 40k? It's cool to geek out and know every possible stat about every possible NFL player in history, but not 40k? Where's the line.

I actually never played 40k in HS, but caught some flak for a D&D habit however. Mostly from religion-users who had been brainwashed a bit. As soon as I got out in the real world, however, I got a D&D campaing going on a deployment in the military and we all saved up some serious cash that way. Until I blew mine on chicks.

As far as booze and drugs, it all depends on wher eyou draw the line. Everyone has their pen, draw that line where they deem fit.

Didn't see any of this at school, and I hung out with the 'not cool', D&D playing, unsporting crowd.

Of course, we didn't advertise what we did, either.

I've explained it to some co-workers once and got the response "dude, that's gay!"
My response back was "And what? Watching a bunch of steroid scoffing men running around a field getting sweaty and muddy isn't?"

These days, I still hang with the unsporting nerdy types and we call each other nerd, geek and feeb.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Hmmm, would be interesting to see if there is a correlation between the size of a gamer and amount of abuse you get. Being 6ft 5in and 22 stone, I'm on the side of having none

I remember a few years ago when I worked for GW a group of lads (must of been late teens, early twenties) came in and started playing up. The rest of the staff seemed a little bit confused on how to handle them I had no such problem and pushed them out. Had a short chubby guy call me fat, which in answer to I just looked him up and down and laughed. Sad little chrub couldn't handle that and spat at me, cheeky liitle chappie also said he'd be waiting for me after work. Never found out how that would of panned out as he never came back.

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

It's when those two cross over that things will get really weird.

I get stick all the time for the way I dress, for having really long hair, for the music I listen to. Back when I was in school I used to get stick for playing Warhammer. But I just ignored it. I've never been big or muscly and I would say I'm the hardest person ever but I can only be pushed so far and because everyone thought I was weak and soft they did just that. Then they would get a quick and painful lesson in not judging a book by it's cover.

These days the same thing applies I'll ignore it for a while but go too far and you will find it is hard to run your mouth when you have a New Rock boot being jammed down your throat. All though I have never and will (probably) never throw the first punch.

As far as sport goes i used to play and enjoy various sports when I was younger but with the shape my knees and back are in I just cant do it like I used to. Although a night out with my friends is usually like a work out lol.

I've met some great friends through the hobby and it gives me lots of enjoyment and so I will carry on doing it and as for what people think I really don't give an airborne sexual encounter.

I wasn't saying there was anything wrong with it - hey I collect the werebears from the 80's if any of you remember them. I was merely speculating on a possible giant rabbit becoming a stuffed animal crossover which may be slightly strange.

The thing that really annoys me is that most of the people that take the p*** about me doing warhammer, used to do it, but they stopped because they lacked the patience.

Being bigger usually helps.

Cheese Elemental-Love does not bloom in 40k. Love burns. It gets turned inside out, set on fire, raped, shot with bolters, and beaten with a crowbar.

I wish I knew about 40K while I was in High School. It wasn't until after that I found most of my geek friends ) I went to a Baltimroe Games Day several years ago and was astounded at the people there. It was amazing. Hundreds upon hundreds of people with the same addic... uh.... tastes that I did. Kind of puts things into perspective. So when people give me that funny look I just laugh. I know where my people are.

"Feeb"=person of generally light build that would be blown over in a light wind. The stereotypical 'nerd' who gets stuffed into lockers in the popular media, unable to protect themselves and also generally not socially ept.

Old slang term from the 80s. When I was a teen.
