Browsing Dakka: more fun than work...

I'm more of a painter myself - I've probably played less than 5 games in the 10 years I've been into Warhammer. I keep meaning to play more - It's just that I don't want to turn up to the local GW etc until I've got a finished army I'm really happy with, I just never seem to get there.....

I like the building and converting aspect myself. Painting is a drag for me, almost as hated as cleaning metal models of flash, mold lines vents and anything else that makes it look like crap.

I love painting and converting.

Only played 2 games back in 4th ed so I am a little undecided about that side of the hobby.

I don't particularly enjoy painting, building and converting, but I very much enjoy the fuzzy feeling you get when the model is finished and on the table. Makes it all worth it...

I enjoy the modelling about as much as the playing.

Sometimes building and painting gets to be a bit of a drag but that's probably because I don't pace myself. (I tend to buy huge piles of models and I then I have to hammer through them because I have too much to do. My '09 project (7500pts of marines) is going to be finished this month.

I'm sick of building/converting/painting.

I really just like to play at this point, though I do admit that I enjoy looking at my painted armies every once and a while. Still, I can't stand getting there.

Magnus: But I know what's best, bawwwwww! Emprah: Horus, tell Russ to bring Magnus to me because I said so. Horus: Emprah wants you to kill Magnus because he said so. Russ: Fine. Emprah's always right. Plus Ole Red has already been denounced as a traitor and I never liked him anyway. Russ: You're about to die, cyclops! Magnus: O noes! Tzeentch, I choose you! Bawwwww! Russ: Ah well. Now to go kill Horus. Russ: Rowboat, how have you not been doing anything? Guilliman: . . . I've been writing a book. Russ: Sigh. Let's go. Guilliman: And I fought the Word Bearers! Jonson: I did nothing! Guilliman: I did more nothing that you! Jonson: Nuh-uh. I was the most worthless! Guilliman: Have you read my book? Dorn: No one likes that book. Khan: C'mon guys. It's not that bad. Dorn: I guess not. Russ: You all suck. Ima go bring the Emprah back to life.

To be honest, as I get older, less and less.

I only play 1 game a week, lasting around 2 hours or so and find that is more than enough. Mainly its an excuse for a chat and a beer with like-minded friends. Pretty much half of our gaming time is just spent shooting the breeze about the latest geeky stuff.

I paint once or twice a week. As much as anything its an excuse for a little "cave time", and a chance to relax without having to watch the gak the wife enjoys on TV.

I browse t'interweb while I'm bored at work - spodding for toy soldiers isn't going to get me in trouble with the internet police at work, unlike other things I could be looking at!

I buy the occasional hobby magazine and black library novel for light reading material when I've got nothing better to do.

The rest of "the hobby" (tweeking rules, building army lists, assembling, converting, building terrain, etc., etc.) really don't interest me at all, they're just necessary evils.

It really is a pretty minor part of my life.

Although it ranks slightly better than "work" in the list of things I want to do with my time!

Browsing models: Fun when new stuff is coming out
Buying models: When I actually have money to buy stuff it's either my birthday, Christmas, or tax-return time. Since I have to be smart (for me that is) with my money it becomes tedious.
Building/painting models: My favorite aspect of the hobby.
Converting models: I generally only convert stuff for 40k and it is enjoyable.

Looking at MY painted army: Feels good, not sex good, but good.
Looking at others painted armies: Fun when they are painted well, but makes me sad if they're better than mine.
Showing off my painted army: Fun I usually get compliments and that feeds my inferiority complex

Friendly games: Fun If I'm playing a friend then I have a great time.
Club games: Not so fun. The guys in my home town are generally idiots.
Tournament games: Fun I prefer tournaments because I meet new people and play different armies.

Reading others stories: Fun I like to see how people shape the history/battles with their word power.
Creating stories for my armies: Some fun. I usually just don't think about doing it.

Checking Dakka: Fun, nearly crack addictive. I spend too much time on the forums and in the articles.

Fantasy: Empire, Beastmen, Warriors of Chaos, and Ogre Kingdoms

I prefer building and converting models to actually painting them, and I enjoy the gaming side (though I've not had a game in a while).

I also dislike spending money :p

A lot of the hobby has to do w/ the people you play w/. If you don't have fun it's no longer a hobby; it's a job.

Very little. I get some joy out of painting and conversions, but that's minimal compared to the amount of time they take.

I'm not going to lie, the only part of this hobby I enjoy is the painting and modeling. 5th edition stinks and is boring to play, and I stress out when I play with toy soldiers because the rules are SO DAMN BAD.

So go find someone who likes playing something else and play that with them. Where's the problem? There are many "tighter" rulesets out there, and you can even use GW figures with many of them...

What is the greatest joy in life ?

To CRUSH my enemy, drive him before me and her the lamentation of his women!

Yeah im a tourney gamer so its all centered around that, I enjoy painting and paint to a fair standard but thats just a means to an end.

I love list building, concocting strategies, trying to second guess what my likley opponents will bring to the table and how they will react to what I have.

I love friendly games with competitive gamers who want to win but still realize that its a game.

I love going to the bar afterwards and discusing the after action reports of the toruney with my friends and my opponents especially the opponents who beat me.

I love the social nerdgasm of hanging out with 100 or more fellow gamers for two - three days of beer hazed carnage.

its all about the tourneys for Big Troy
