Ok, my thoughts as a scratch builder/ kit basher

Well, for a start I think that if you are going to a GW style tourney, there should be a large element of Gw mini in the build. This however is tempered by the fact that some Judges are more lenient than others. It comes down to what is said on the day and what the rules are.

I have to say that over the years I have seen some awefull ideas made spectacularly well and conversly some great ideas made with Fists of Ham I'm lucky enough to live close enough to WHW to play there as my main venue, so I get to see all sorts of random goodness (and badness). There are lots of people out there that think it is enough to stick a few random bitz to a 'model' kit and that is 40k enough, when it looks baggins. There are a lot of people who can scratch upto GW standards, and well done them I hope to keep seeing their work in the P+M section. However, just because it looks fantastic doesn't mean that it will pass muster at all tourneys because each will have it's own min specs on GWness. Not ideal for all, but the world we live in.

I hope the thin skinned nature of some of the posters (general poke at the entire forum) goes away, as oppinions will differ for whatever reason

I kinda sit on the fence on this one. I believe that all models in the field must fit the scale and spirit of 40k. Warhammer is probably 70% atmosphere for me, and it has been since I saw my first battle reports in White Dwarf probably 14 some odd years ago, but I do make exceptions in that it doesn't have to be a GW piece to make it field worthy.

If you put the time into it, it can make a great field piece, even if people would pick it apart at tourneys. Heck some of the most amazing conversions, sculpts and scratch builds I've ever seen come from these forums and they probably wouldn't make it past a judge.

The stick in my craw through, comes from proxies. A well made LR made from a cereal box? Awesome. I wish I had your patience ... but a can of primer proudly declared to be a Conqueror? No thanks

I guess in short, convert or scratch build away, just put some time into it. I'm sure most of us have had days when someone tries to fight us with an Eldar army made from a bag of Starbursts and a block of wood from outside of the hobby shop. If theres no love then its just 3 hours of rolling dice, and thats not fun for anyone (Unless the Starburts beat you, in which case it was probably fun for the other guy)

This is ridiculously OT, but before me and my brother got our models we would play all proxies against two other guys who had most of their armies. I use macaroni as grots. They were regularly wiped out by small blast templated.

If you must use proxies, make them the right size.

But public opinion, because of the tremendous urge to conformity in gregarious animals, is less tolerant than any system of law. When human beings are governed by "thou shalt not", the individual can practise a certain amount of eccentricity: when they are supposedly governed by "love" or "reason", he is under continuous pressure to make him behave and think in exactly the same way as everyone else.

Eh, my problem has always been, personally, making thousands of Cadians look different. I have a GIGANTIC IG army (closing on a whole regiment) as I've made a point to use bits etc from a lot of sources so that they all don't look the same. However, all of them are very obviously Cadian IG.

In fact, as I type this I'm trying out some of the much feared Doc Thunder et al female Cadian bits to make a flamer wielding cadain guard chick. And in all honesty, she's scarier then the screaming head men. something about that smirk while aiming a flamer...

Ironically, some of them I'd be surprised if anyone noticed.

"Wait, why does gaurdsman #4013 have a ghetto booty peeking out from under that flamer tank... ZOMG IT'S A CHIXOR!!!!"

Ah, the delicous irony of the internet.

I'm going to go ahead and flip this around on you and give you guys my PoV...

I work hard on my models. I love to convert, alter, and change models, as my two main armies are Death Guard and Orks. When I see someone put his model German Tiger with a glued on HK missile on the table I want to light it on fire, throw it across the room, give a primal scream and run over and jump up and down on it until not 1 single part is recognizable.

This is a visual hobby. Winning games is awesome, don't get me wrong, but this hobby is about my Army of Awesome fighting against your Army of Not-So-Awesome. The aesthetics matter. When I made my looted wagons, I kit bashed 3 GW kits. It frustrates me and disappoints me, and it definitely detracts from my enjoyment of the game when someone puts down a cereal box with glued on guns. Does everyone have to kit-bash 3 kits to make one tank? No. But, in my opinion, everyone who plays in this hobby owes it to their opponent to attain some measure of aesthetical parity, just like everyone owes it to their opponent not to cheat. Is scratch built, proxies, et al cheating, no, but for me, they're just as bad.

Notice the parity portion, where your Zeppelins fit in. Praetorians=Victorian Imperials, Zeppelins=Slightly latter, but still appropriate parity for the theme.

I find it interesting DeathGod, that you assume my conversions are bad automatically. I'm actually quite good converter, and I wouldn't dream on plonking down 'a cereal box with guns glued on'.

For example, the zeppelins I'm currently building will have the basic airship shape made out of a 2 litre plastic bottle. However the cupola will be constructed from various chimera, russ, and city of death pieces, the turrets will be of Forgeworld origin as will several other bits and pieces such as fuel tanks and so on. The engine at the back will cut out of plasticard, and duely adorned with various games workshop components. Not only that, it'll be mounted on a Valkyrie flying base, and well painted.

Yet you tell me you find me using such a model insulting?

So while he mentions his opinion appropriateness you still jump on him for his opinion about your modeling ability? That just doesn't make any kind of sense.

M2C, do you troll on every W40k forum? So far, every thread I've seen you post to, you've been picking fights with people.

Nope, I am normally pretty positive, you have just caught me in threads I am not positive in.

Frankly M2C, I'm on your side. though deathgod did kinds sound like he was gunning after someone, everyone should chill out and look at the point he was making. which is a valid one...to some extent...
