Again, you state obesity and not washing is "common" - care to back that up with any facts?

Of course you don't because you don't have other than your "personal experience" from our small part of our large world.

PS: Read the OP again and nowhere do I see a mention of smelly gamers.

PPS: Let's just start throwing out as many stereotypes as we can.

Maybe we should just start talking Eugenics - then you wouldn't have to deal with smelly, fat, socially inept gamers?

I remember when I was overweight (up to 108kg) I used to sweat a horrendous amount.
Even with heaps of antiperspirant/deoderant.

But I showered twice a day to keep my smell to 'Manly funk' rather than 'This smells worse than fart'.

Since I lost the weight I barely sweat anymore.

I have put on a few pounds since I got my truck and stopped biking and walking all the time. I have definitely been sweating more than I used to, showers make all the difference, and there is nothing wrong with smelling like you unless that smells like fried beans and pork bellies.

I have a very different problem. I can't gain weight to save my life! I'm eating even more than I usually do to try and gain weight during the off season (I play rugby) but I just can't! I am of normal weight but I really need to gain some weight If I want to be more competitive. I play wing and I am pretty fast but when I see a Monster 200+ pound prop bearing down on me I am sick of getting run over when I attempt to tackle him. I wish I could gain weight as easily as some of these other gamers.

I hear massive amounts of protien is supposed to help with that. Start drinking Steak and peanut butter shakes. Every 10 minutes.

That's correct, but my empirical evidence is in no way invalidated by the fact that I haven't met every person in the world. Considering that about 30% of gamers I've ever met are obese,( and by that, I mean more than a little chubby), and almost every one of them smelt, I would feel fully justified in saying that obese gamers seem to have an aversion to washing. You may disagree, but considering that any evidence you would counter mine with would be empirical as well, my evidence is just as good as yours.

And you just had to bring the nazi's into it, didn't you? Ever heard of Godwin's Law?

We're only the second page in for crying out loud. If you can only go two posts in a discussion without calling the other side Nazi's, and using an argument as tired as, 'blah blah, you only know what you've seen therefore you don't know gak' , then to be honest, you strike me as nothing more than a pretentious fool trying to act clever.

And if the first reply that springs to your mind when reading this is something along the lines of, 'Ah, I said eugenics, not nazi's!', then you really are one.

About to eat your Avatar...

The thing about most professional rugby players is they are extremely muscular, far from our linebackers in the U.S. which usually resemble a form of brick wall.

If you are skinny by natural default I can't imagine it being healthy to try and bulk up past your natural limits. I highly doubt your body would appreciate you forcing it to be bigger than it has the natural potential to be.

On that same note we might as well be watching robots play a lot of these sports with the expectations set by todays viewers. People are not massively strong, or quick, or even agile for that matter. We have used tools to be "better" than a natural runner, or sheer power-house, nowadays though supplements seem to be commonplace and they have become a way to exceed your natural limitation. If I wanted to be unnatural I think bionic arms would be my first choice, a six pack and the ability to tackle people of the a slightly larger size is simply no match for this.

Your evidence is hardly a fair, unbiased random sampling. Perhaps just the gamers in your area are filthy? Gee i've met plenty of smelly people who aren't fat. Looks like my "evidence" conflicts with yours.

Lets just get the facts straight:

You are making a personal attack against me, and not my argument, because I brought up Eugenics. The Eugenics movement existed in America prior to the formation of the National Socialist Workers Party. Look it up sometime if you haven't. Hate and ignorance exist in every culture, they still exist today as is evident in this thread.

What I was trying to do is make the point that this thread is absurd. It's nothing more than a bunch of people talking about how they find fat people disgusting. It really, truly is. The OPs "musings" are nothing more than his pretentious ramblings about how disgusted he is by fat people and how he is better than they are. He just can't "understand" how people let them do that to themselves. Is it that he can't understand or he doesn't want too?

A lot of the comments in this thread echo that, and then stereotypes just started getting thrown around:

Gamers are fat, smelly, socially inept, etc, etc, etc.

This is nothing more than a hateful thread bashing on overweight people using blatantly untrue stereotypes.

The moderation needs to lock this thread and delete it.

I await your reply where undoubtedly you will once again start implying insults. Oh wait, that's against the rules of this forum. Oops.

I will say, however, that it has served an excellent purpose. Once I had to pick up some plastic glue and I happened to be hanging out with my girlfriend. Now, she's been a close friend forever, was aware of my gaming habit, and the relationship is reasonably serious, but the fact that she didn't dump me after I showed her around a store full of skinny 13 year olds and less skinny 40 year olds arguing over the true nature of Slaanesh, I knew she was a keeper. (not Of Secrets, either)

It would be nice if gamers could rise up and throw off those negative stereotypes. Some of them are already falling (I've seen girls in the store! OMG!).

Lagduf get off your high horse you started it with the eugenics statement.

OT but that actually predates the Nazis and still exists. Ginsberg made a very interesting comment in an interview the other day about the new for Roe to keep down undersirable populations that receieved very little press.

Apparently 1 in every 3 soldiers in the Australian Army are overweight or obese...

Currently a pile of them are on exercise here in Queensland, Australia with the US Marines... and both groups are going through 5000 cream buns per day, each with enough calories that it takes 10 hours of walking to burn them off....

Whaddaya know? The first thing that sprang to your mind was 'Ah, I said Eugenics, not Nazis!'. Wonder how I predicted that one.....

Yes your statement of experience is different to mine. But that doesn't make it better than mine!

And yes, you brining up Eugenics, and all the usual implied nasty associations is reason for thinking you a bit pretentious in my book. I disagreed with what you said before you brought up eugenics, and I disagree with what you're saying without it. Deal with it. You're going on about throwing around offensive stereotypes about gamers here.

I AM A GAMER

And because of that, I'm fully aware of a large chunk of the gamer population is comprised as I detailed above. I've travelled a bit, and moved to areas all over england. What I've found has remained consistent throughout. Therefore I feel fully justified in claiming that stereotypes have some basis in reality.

If you're already mortally offended by this, than you need to grow a thicker skin, pal. You're on the internet. People may very well disagree with you from time to time. If I was breaking forum rules, the two mods that just posted would already have cracked down. However, the mods on this forum know what is, and isn't appropriate.

In other words:

DEAL WITH IT

Modquisition on:

Gentlemen, this is getting heated. We can have a polite discussion here, discussing the veracity of gamer stereotypes without being insulting too each other and bringing up such topics as eugenics. If we cannot then this thread will be closed.

I think we can also agree there is a difference between being fat and being offensive smelling.

I think there are even store generic differences:
*US GW stores: higher proportion of kids, late teens. These can often have a sense of stench, but other than being physically dirty/smelly from the day, are normal (news flash to you youngins from a parent-if you're a teenage boy, you reek-do something about it)
There are instances of the real stink thief though, but its not too bad.

*FLGS. Older gamers and MTG types. Often the Dark side of the force is strong with this crew. The young ones have the teenage hormones but never learned the whole shower/breath spray/clean freeking clothes thing. Older gamers can be even worse.

Sorry but the MTG/D&D crowds I've run into at FLGS and when escorting ze Boy on his global domination tours when he was younger just trumped most anything 40K related. Mostly normal kids but sometimes it was just absolutely horrific.

Misery. Missouri. Who can tell the difference.

As I stated in my post I would rant the next week and it is here. Saterday I went to my LGS to pick up a figure case and totally forgot it was the Ard Boyz weekend. I did do this 9 hour hurt fest last year and I am glad I did not do it this year. Just to see how things were going I poked my head in to gaming area where the haze of humanity was already building up. Between the complaining, screams for a ruling, Dice being thrown on the ground out of anger and one crunching of a stepped on nid I saw that there was an mythical creature gracing the gamers presence with a gamer that I have never seen before. This rare creature was a good looking women.

Then what came into my mind was what I have noticed the behavior from alot of gamers in the LGS the past few years and looked around and saw that there was a mixture of gamers not paying attention to the game but doing the "It's puts the lotion in the basket or it gets the hose again." look at her. This behavior I relly noticed when my wife use to grace us at out gaming group when a gamer was staring at my wife with a slack jawed, wide eyed look as she bent over the table to pick up a model. Then I went to a tournie and another gamer's girlfriend was sitting watching a dvd trying to avoid verbal or even eye contact with the nerds or gamers were doing the same look at her.

While I know that a woman willing to walking into a LGS is rare and a good looking woman willing to stick around while her worst half plays a game is even rarer. This does not give a gamers the right to stare so hard she can feel her underware burning you sex deprived, pron addicted, dice throwers. I am always waiting to see how many gamers run over to the chair and sniff it after she gets up.

I don't care if dad beat you, or mom didn't hold you enough or that the cheerleaders would not give you the time of day does not give you the right to stare like a chester at a playground like it was a all you can eat buffet. Not only does it creep out the women when they walk in to by something for a gamer's birthday it does creep out other gamers because I don't want to think about the gamer across me dancing in his mom's basement nude with the boys tucked say, "If I was a guy I would me too." It makes me want to go home, burn my clothing and cry in the shower in the featal position.

Now that I have kick these panel van driving geeks in the grapes, a few socially excepted tips. When a good looking woman walks in, a quick one second glance is ok, she walks past a quick peek is cool . No one will say anything since to look is human but to hungerly stare is creepy. After that just concentrate on the game or I can see a Ex Parte in your future . Keep your comments to yourself because you don't know whom is around because she could be someone's sister or better half. For those whom know whom I am talking to please follow these easy rule because if the women feel creeped out in the store the LGS owner will lose their business and you could even find yourself explaining yourself to a cop why you were not going to wear her skin as a woman suit.

Enough for this rant I will post another rant later.

P.S. Remember the three foot rule. Any closer than three feet is invading personal space for women and cops normally resulting an a swift kick in the junk or a being slammed to the pavement. If you do not know what three feet is stick your arm out all the way out and that is approx three foot personal space. So invading that space and asking, "So you like high elves? You want to see my spearmen?" is just creepy.

Forever alone

Well most of the gawkers would be teens/young adults, right? It sounds like you're exaggerating a bit here. I've been to a LOT of stores, GW and Independents, and I rarely see this stereotype. I mean, of course younger people are going to gawk at your wife, more so if she's a particularly attractive woman.

Sounds like your standards are far too high. People stink in large numbers, and your wife is attractive. Deal with it.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Considering you're not hanging around to respond and you tell us you're planning on making a rant every week, so I'm guessing you're treating this like a column or something. Maybe you even fancy yourself as the next Bill Hicks or something. Whatever it is you're trying to achieve I wish you well, but I'll just leave you with a couple of tips.

First up, good commentators earn their stripes by taking on taboo subjects, attacking positions of power, and giving new insight into topics. 'Fat gamers are fat and I don't think they should be' and 'teenage boys are awkward around women and I'm smug about that' is not new ground, it isn't challenging anything, its more like kicking a puppy, and you aren't really saying anything that hasn't been said by countless other internet people before.

Second up, text is a hard medium to make funny. You've got some awkward phrasing in your rants which wouldn't be much if you were just making regular posts but seeing as how you seem to want something more out of this, I recommend you give your rants an edit before you post.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

I am writing these quickly so to refocus my eyes after reviewing endless government documents all day long. For this post, I notice it is not the younger gamers that are gawking but the older one like 35 to 50 year old gamers that are gawking. It gives you the "strangers have the best candy" feeling when you see it.

These rants are me just sharing my thoughts for people to discuss and if people disagree with me that is fine and if they agree that is good to. But a healthly discussion on the issue from the community is always good on these gamer specific social topics and taboos. I do not get into arguements on the forums, just putting my thoughts out there. And if you want know I will make these same comments in the LGS so this is not just a forum rant.

So basically, you state something that bugs you, accurate or not, and then refuse to enter into discussion on it?

If you can't be bothered to discuss it, neither can I. That's the last post I'm gonna make in this thread.

I observed the tournament this weekend, at my local store and was pleasently surprised. There wasn't alot of yelling or rules lawyering, but more important there was only one obnoxiously smelly guy, and a couple of people with dragon breath. The overall ummm tonnage wasn't that bad. Nothing like Gamesday or Blizzcon, just remembering the smells gives me a shiver and a twitching sensation in my nose.

Yeah, same. PU / SU no problem, but the running's a bitch...

That "little belly action" adds up over time. A few pounds isn't a big deal. Until you multiply a few pounds per year times several years.

I'm thinking maybe the summer weather may not exactly be helping. Heat + fat is never a good thing (unless it's bacon, Mmm bacon). At our FLGS the female counterpart of the husband/wife team occasionally makes a trip down the Magic tables with a can of Lyesol. Some people have commented that they think it is rude, but I'm thankful. Helps reduce the smell trauma that I could be suffering.

I watched a good part of the 650lb Virgin on TLC last night. That will give you a perspective into the life of somebody who has changed for the better.

Oh yeah I can't talk crap about the weight (not that I would anyways). Went to the doctor today and got weighed... I'm thinking soda and deserts are off the menu for a while.

Eh it's been a couple years and I'm about 12 pounds heavier and the weight has migrated a bit lol. At 33 years old I think I'm doing ok. I do need to excersise more though. I don't have the energy I had while I was excersising daily.

As to fat gamers, I don't really care. As long as their not bothering me it's all good. Jerks are not defined by their body fat content. Smells on the other hand, make the environment unpleasant and is easily remedied, not so much with a weight problem.
