And since Reaper mostly makes very specific metal models sales on each model is probably in the 100s or low 1000s.
So no, their prices are about right.
Oh KK you said it!!!! now we know what GW will do next year to turn a profit

Um you do know GW metals are $12-17 each right?

The metal doesn't cost quite that much for a fig that small. I'd guess about $0.75.

If you bought Catachans back in 1999 for $22 for 20, could now sell them $25 for 10.
So taht's what, a 10% return per year? Not great but not too shabby.

I wonder if anyone even plays it. A game that's directly competing against Warhammer Fantasy (which isn't doing so well itself) which uses only metal models? I don't see how it could be anything but insanely expensive.

You don´t need the same amount of figures to play so that balances it.

I'm not sure, but I'd guess that a lot of people buy Reaper minis to use in other wargaming systems, as well as RPGs like D&D. A few serious Warlord players are probably just a bonus. I could be wrong though, maybe there's a bunch of Warlord players hiding out somewhere.

Reaper is really the heritor of Ral Partha: The largest and most diverse source of generic tabletop RPG miniatures. When you need to represent something specific in an adventure, buy Reaper. Kobolds to liche-lords to Turkish anarchist bombers. They specifically court the generic market, and do it well.

This is what I get for being lazy. I was planning on doing a short blurb on the impending release of Warlord 2nd edition, but things happened and I never got around to it.
Ignore the army books that you see on Reaper's site - they are completely unuseable now, except from a fluff standpoint. Reaper is about to release the 2nd edition of Warlord on July 27th. It is a skirmish-level game, and does not require the number of miniatures that you would need for a Warhammer army of the same point value (unless you do a grand Reven army - their Orcs and Gobbos - then you're talking a good number of models). For example, my 1000 point Dwarf army has around 23 miniatures in it - it's not a terribly fine tuned army, but it's all infantry with about three high point leader types.
The new rulebook retails for $19.95, is softcover and B&W inside (not too happy about the lack of color myself, but Reaper said that decision was made to keep the cost down, which I AM happy about). It contains full rules (of course) and the army lists for 10 factions. These are complete, permanent lists which will hopefully not go through the constant tinkering like they did in the past edition - Gus Landt, this version's writer, says that changes will be made "over (his) dead body".
The game uses Reaper's "Rage" game system - in a nutshell, it is d10 based with each model having one or more damage tracks. As a model takes in-game damage, it's stats degrade (which is similar to a clicky game without the clicky base, I just realized). Turns are taken by a mostly random unit activation sequence using the draw of cards, or different colored dice from a bag. This draw can be affected by certain models, such as adding extra cards in your favor or allowing you to put one of your opponent's cards "on hold" while you draw the next in the hopes that it will be one of yours. Most model types have some sort of Special Abilities that they can use (similar to USRs). These SAs can affect the model's fighting abilities, magic use/resistance, movment, even the turn sequence are previously noted. Personally, I loves me some Tough/#, which gives me a chance of saving a model with that SA from death.
Unfortunately, the game bogs down a bit at higher point values, but folks around here usually don't play at that level (3,000+ or so).
Don't like the official Reaper Warlord models? Reaper policy allows Warlord players to proxy any model from their lines (Dark Heaven, Legendary Encounters and the like). Of course, no one is stopping you from using ANY model in your collection, as long as it's not at an official Reaper event. My Warhammer Orcs moonlight as a Reven army at home while I teach my kids the rules.
So there's my blurb. Sorry if it's not too concise as I'm furtively typing it up at work. Hopefully, I wrote it as unbiased as possible as I am quite the Reaper fanboy - I live just 30 minutes from them and was recently invited to join the playtester group for future Warlord expansions. I have always liked Warlord over WHFB - then again, I tend to like skirmish games, period.
Still interested? Go to the Reaper web site forums.
Not interested? Three words for you - Dwarf Bear Cavalry. Oh yes, I love them so!

I have to go on with the chorus of people singing the praises of Reaper for RPGs. I've gone with them for modern-day games, though they are also one of the only companies that make minis for that context that aren't exclusively military.
