My list of paints I use:

Vallejo MC and GC
Citadel Foundation and Washes
Tamiya
Createx Model Air and Wicked airbrush paints (yes they can be brushed on, not necessary to just airbrush)
Testors Model Master

I find lately that I use airbrush colors more, especially basic black and white.....normally a lot thinner than any hobby paint. The Createx Wicked line of paints lay down nice with a brush and can be thinned with alcohol or windex if the need arises (not really necessary unless a wash is needed, in that case Citadel Washes are best out there IME).

Unfortunately most airbrush paints come in 4oz up to 1gal jugs......4oz will do an entire army and then some. Wicked paints from Createx are in 16oz bottles....I have enough gold yellow paint to paint around 50k pts worth of Imperial Fist marines.....alot more if I airbrush the yellow on

For priming: Autoprimer from my local autosupplier.
For painting (brush): Vallejo game colour, GW, Tamiya even humbrol acrylics (depending on colour required).
For airbrushing: Tamiya/Gunze Sangyo (thinned).

Over all of them, GW washes (but I only use badab black, devlan mud and gryphonne sepia).

I use GW for flesh-tones and washes though.
Does anybody know how to get/make non GW washes?

Water down your craft paint. The trick is not to lay it on liberally like the GW washes. You need more precision when using Craft Paint Washes. Place it only in the areas you want and place it sparingly. For Craft Paint Washes, when large amounts dry, the color pigments tend to settle and dry on the outside border of your application. Therefore if you have a large drop of the cheap homemade washes, it would be best to take another brush and lift the excess with the bristles. Again, Craft paint alsways will need alot more work. If you do not have the patience to work with these paints, then I recommend finding a higher paying job to subsidize the Citadel or Vallejo paints.

When and if they become available at my local hobby store, I shall try them.

Until then, the GW ones fill the requirement.

Also, please note that Vallejo tubes come in 17 ml bottles versus the GW Citadel paint pots that only have 12 ml. Vallejo will be priced the same as CItadel because they have more paint. So, compare the per ml price when buying. The hobby store here has a 20% off all GW products and that makes the Citadel paints less than Vallejo.

Buy colored or black ink from your craft store and water it down to the point you want, just test out the darkness on something to see if it's what
you want (perhaps a part of a test model or something).

A mix of GW and VMC/VGC. I like the Vallejo most.
Looking forward to their new heavy coverage range
much like GW Foundation range.
