Interesting - I didn't know they were going to do special rules, now I'm curious to find out what they'll be.

Neither can I

Now, onto:

PART SEVEN: FACE THE FACTS

Unfortunately I could only scrape together about half an hour to work on him today, so I quickly tidied up a few things here and there in preparation for tomorrow. Most of my time was spent on his face and hair - I'm going to give him dark grey/black hair, because I think the face needs a different colour than white to draw focus to it. Normally in situations like this, I'd paint the face first, however on this model, there's an awkward bit of hair to get to that lies between his head and the inside of his armour - so when I paint it, I'd probably get a little paint on his face, so I'll leave the face until afterwards. The hair is almost done - it needs another ink wash or two for darkening, then a couple of minor highlights to smooth it out and it should be good:

Tomorrow I'm going to have to get at least everything but his cloak and sword finished and finalised, and maybe do a bit of work on them too, If I get the time.

I'm glad that there are people following along this blog - if anyone have any questions about any stage, or about what I'm planning for the rest of these models, don't hesitate to ask!

Cool

PART EIGHT: MY, WHAT A LONG SWORD YOU HAVE

I'm veryclose to finishing this model - I finished his face today and nearly finished his sword. It was really odd to try and paint a model with eyebrows as bushy as his - it's not something you encounter often! Also, If you have one of these but haven't painted it yet, here's a quick tip - painting his left eye is maddeningly difficult to do because the huge shoulder-plates and massive eyebrows force you to bring your brush in at an angle that is ridiculously steep. The best solution I found was to do it roughly, then shade the eyesocket to make it less noticeable. What I had assumed at first was a ding in his sword-blade turned out on closer inspection, to be a collapsed airbubble. I'm going to have to think about whether to fill it in and paint over it, or add a little more battle-wear to the blade to make it fit in.

So, cloak tomorrow, which I hope to get finished or very nearly so!

Wow this guy is turning out awesome! Hmmmm basing all the gold stuff yellow first, dang why didn't I think of that a long time ago. That makes it so much easier. Now a question about the armour, what colors and washes did you use? I know you said Dheneb stone and washes, but could you give me a step by step on it please? I can't wait to hime finished with the retinue.

A light brown works too, depending on the final colour of gold you wish to achieve - and if you use a foundation paint, it makes painting gold over black an absolute breeze

Now a question about the armour, what colors and washes did you use?
These are the steps I used, though of course they could be a lot simpler, since I was experimenting as I went along (mix ratios are a best guess as to how I remember it):
  • Basecoat Dheneb Stone
  • Wash with Devlan Mud
  • Highlight with Dheneb Stone
  • Wash with thinned Badab Black (about 2:1 Water/wash)
  • A touch of wash in some of the crevices with thinned Gryphonne Sepia for an extra antique look
  • Highlight with 2:1 Dheneb Stone / Skull White
  • Edge Highlight with 1:1 Dheneb Stone / Skull White
  • Very fine Edge Highlight with 1:2 Dheneb Stone / Skull White

  • I used the feathering technique I described in a previous post to help blend the layers together. I kept the paint thin to help with transparency, and on the larger panels, I would sometimes do a highlight stage a couple of times with the same mix to intensify the colour. Make sure the first layer is dry when you do this though, or the feathering technique can lift off the layer of paint underneath

It sounds like a lot more work than it is, but still, it's not something I'd do to a whole army! I hope this helps - let me know if you'd like anything explained in greater detail

    Now, on to:

    PART NINE: SEEING RED

Well, this took longer than expected - the cloak is a really broad, flat surface and took ages to paint and shade - just under two hours alone! I did it in the same colour red I used elsewhere - Mechrite Red, washed with Devlan Mud, Highlighted with Blood Red and then Iyanden Darksun and glazed with Baal Red to tie it all together. I'm still not 100% happy with it, you can see in the pictures that it's not hugely smooth, but it's much less noticeable on the model itself:

Tomorrow I'm going to have to finish him off - fortunately there's only the tassels, the trim on the cloak and a few spots of touching up needing to be done

    PART TEN: REX WRAPPED

I'm done with him I think - that's not to say I wont notice a couple of little things here and there over the next few days, and I'm still in two minds about his sword. However I can start to turn my attention to his cohorts, which shouldn't take anywhere near as long to do! I went with white on the trim for two reasons - so it matched the trim on his loincloth, but also because I think that more yellow at this point would be too much. I painted the tassels black, because I wanted to have something echo the black found in his hair.

Here he is, the base isn't done because I'll do those all together at the end:

I'm going to start work on that little cherubim tomorrow, get it out of the way then do the other four in two lots of two.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks guys, I hope you'll like the rest of the squad as much

PART ELEVEN: HOW DO THEY RISE UP?

Since some people have been interested in how I use Devlan Mud I thought I'd do a before/after on this little guy. I simply pant basic colours over the black undercoat, being neat-ish but using fairly light tones. Then I wash the whole thing to bring out detail and provide instant shading reference, This works a lot better than the old inks used to, and is a variant of the technique I used back then which essentially involved me making my own wash from paint, water, ink and dishwashing liquid. I like this way much better

Using this method you can instantly see how and what to highlight - but unfortunately I had already started highlighting the metal when I thought about doing this idea, but you can see my point anyway.

Thank you! - and both of you are correct

I was in a rush this afternoon, so I forgot to adjust the colour properly, which has made some of the highlighting tricky to see, My next pic of him will be better, I promise - I'm trying to give the skin a little something of a lifeless pallor. I still have to do his hair, blindfold and ribbon but that shouldn't take long!

    Guard wrote:Just...wow.

Thanks! Painting can still be difficult - I have been challenging myself on purpose with these models - but remember - 80% of a good paint job is brush control. (Plus 15% good colour choice and 5% swearing ). Painting guides never seem to cover this stuff, but learning how to use different parts of the brush in different ways is a huge help to your skills. As a basic example, using the brush at a shallow angle to the surface, applying more of the side of the brush than the tip, makes easier to predict where it will go, and is really good for applying paint to larger areas, as well as getting neatly into corners.

PART THIRTEEN: ONE DOWN, FOUR TO GO

I've finished the Cherubim today, which was not too tricky to be honest, since he was almost done already. I shaded/highlighted the red ribbons and painted his hair, blindfold and the purity seal on the back of the bolter. I went for blonde rather than white hair, because it would stand out better against the white wings. The hair is Iyanden Darksun and Bleached Bone, lightened with Skull White. The blindfold is highlighted with Bleached Bone and Skull White. The red parts and the purity seals I painted the same way as on Rex:

One thing I didn't mention when I posted about this before is the 'stripey' highlighting I used on his skin - I did this to try and create the impression that this is old, preserved flesh, not a truly living thing at all. I also see that I have missed a bit of highlighting on the bolter magazine - must remember to tidy that up tomorrow!

I also have roughed-in the next two henchmen, in preparation for a base wash:

That's a combination of working wet-in-wet for the base colours (where you apply the two colours together quickly, then blend them on the model whilst still wet) and using fine streaky highlights with more flesh-tone mixed in with the red, and then a final very light drybrush to bring out the puckered skin and make it look ragged.

    And now, on to:

    PART FOURTEEN: HENCHIN' IT UP

Got quite a way with these guys today, Though I spent ages trying to get the tabard on the warrior to look good, and it still needs some work. I really hate painting pure white. I've decided to reverse the whites on these two models - the sword-bearer is holding a warm-white scabbard, to show that it belongs to Rex, and so has a cool-white lining to his cloak. The Warrior therefore has a warm-white lining to his cloak and a cool-white tabard. These are similar techniques to the ones used on Rex, in order to visually link the models together. I also decided too give the sword-bearer a little inquisition tattoo, and I painted his skin extremely pale - as if he might be some vat-grown experiment:

I am toying with the idea of aging the warrior's armour back some more, but I'll see how I feel about it tomorrow - I'm hoping to get these guys close to finished!
