Being in development for a long time does not mean a game will be good.

I remember the days when Blizzard didn't make cartoony and boring games. So far, Starcraft II just looks like the original game with new graphics.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Lol no . Thats not the point of what i said.
Within the past few years the most popular RTS are Supreme Command and DOW I&II
Blizzard isnt dumb enough to release SC2 when they have no confidence it'll be able to beat those rivals , especially
the game play for those 2 are very innovative.

Now they rather push back the release and gamble to see what can their devs come up with before their fan base ran out of patience.

EA Los Angeles (Westwood) weren't afraid to release Command and Conquer 3 when there was competition from Dawn of War and other popular RTS games. Blizzard always assure us that their games will be great, and they keep pushing them back even when they don't lack confidence. They weren't afraid to release Diablo II despite imminent competition from Neverwinter Nights and Dungeon Siege.

Blizzard aren't adding new content, they're too busy working on World of Warcrack.

Why are you convinced that Blizzard can do no wrong? Have you seen how revoltingly imbalanced Warcraft III was? Have you seen how outdated Diablo II's graphics were? How everything 'new' in WoW is just recycled content?

Wake up and sniff your coffee; Blizzard are idiots who wouldn't know balance and originality if it tried to crawl up their arses.

Oh, the D&D thing. I forgot about that ages ago. I don't really see how that's relevant to this discussion though.

Honestly, from what I've seen of SC2, it looks like an improved SC1... not that thats bad, but honestly, if they don't push the boundaries some and improve on what they once had, I don't think its gonna hold peoples attention for long, especially with koreans owning all of Bnet :/

Daikatana was a game that had spent years in development and was hyped all the way to the moon. It was supposed to be the end-all game of its genre forever and blow everyone in the industry away. It was set back in development many times, to the tune of a few years or so. When it was finally released, it was revealed to be a terrible game. Tanked.

I can't for the life of me see why it has such a great appeal. I've played both SC and Brood War but found them bland, Diablo 2 and it's expansion are ace, but the rest is rather MEH. Especially WoW, which I've played for a good 6 months.

Considering its 1 decade old ( going to 11 years now ) cant really expect SC1 to be able to be compared to modern RTS.
( with DOW's melee system , i wouldnt be surprised if they are trying to do something similar ) which SC1 didnt have.

Starcraft appealed to me primarily because it allowed me to play space monsters instead of conventional stuff. That's about it. Creative unit design and an interesting (if not wholly original) universe for those units to be killing each other in. I've never cared for the blatantly anti-casual multiplayer scene though.

I always thought that the lasting success of Starcraft and Warcraft 3 were due to the ease of modding them. The custom maps provided at least 3 or 4 free games every month with a very well established multiplayer community.

That was provided by dedicated players more than the company. I'm very wary about the lack of balance they've been using with WoW recently. The DKs still seem nigh unstoppable, and I can remember when a mage was nothing more than a vending machine. It may just be nostalgia, but I fondly remember Warcraft 3 being a relatively fair game.

True, Warcraft III is very easy to mod, and I'm making a campaign for Frozen Throne, which I really need to get back to work on. The maps like DotA and Zerg Infestation remind me of the good times on Battle.net, before Blizzard released the latest patch, which killed the new versions of DotA and apparently took it back to version 6.49 or something.

However, the cookie-cutter strategies were the reason I never played a tournament. Every single game it was Necrowagon, or Blademaster harrass, or Firelord abuse, or one of those other boring strategies. It was a right kick in the nuts to someone attempting Necrowagon when I went and trained a bunch of air units.

I never liked Warcraft 3, apart from the excellent campaign editor.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.
