The wrong Christmas present, being a 3rd edition boxed game of 40k. Turned my young life upside down.

To quote the Channel 4 show, Peep Show: "I'm cancelling out of shame, like my subscription to White Dwarf"

My cousin was having a birthday so I needed to get him a gift, something different, (this was 2002) so I went to a local hobby shop to see what he had. I saw some cool mini soldiers ( think flames of war) and wanted to get them, but didnt have money. Next time I went there, the minis were gone and I somehow ended up getting him eldar guardians.
Once we saw the space marines ( they looked so much like terrans from starcraft) we both picked em up and ive been playing since.

Me I got hooked by my parents and they don't play paint or understand any of it but I got nagged into games workshop for a trial game and since then I've had dwarves and a mate showed me 40k and from there I had a game of LotR and enjoyed it and so now I have 3 armies and some nids from macragge and some goblins from skull pass and mines of moria and am trying to sell my dwarves

A firm believer in yin and yang.

Well when I was little, my older brother got really into it. He got several books, the first being Execution Hour which was amazing, and then Storm of Iron. From there it all just grew. Now my little brother uses his space marine army and I'm on the Guard bandwagon

I first became interested in 40k after seeing a friends armies many years ago, however at the time money was tight and I couldn't afford the "luxary" of 40k.
A few years later an ex-girlfriends brother bought 2 copies of the 3rd ed box and gave me all the Dark Eldar,I built that army up and several others (lost all of them in Huricane Katrina) ,but have obviously stayed firmly hooked.

I have been a fan of a former FASA corp. game called Vor, the Maelstrom. It went out of print when they sold out to whizkids years ago, and the rights went back to the owner. I found the owner's forum, and patiently waited while he promised he was going to release the rules in a second edition of the game... two years later I got tired of waiting and saw a AoBR starter set... and then I found out that other people in my area actually play this game (unlike Vor)! And the rules and models are continually updated! (well kinda). I was sold.

I was tired of D & D and just happened on a Games Workshop store while going to another store. The employees and custormers were playing Epic 40K. I was fascinated by the game and all those tanks and troops so I bought the Space Marine boxed set. I added regular 40K a few years later the Rogue Trader book.

A friend showed me a beautiful lizard man model in a blister which he'd bought, not really knowing what it was. I was intrigued and we promptly got started - I bought a box of Eldar, then scrapped them, then bought a box of orks - hooked ever since.

When I was too young to really understand what it was, my parents bought my step-brother and I a boxed set of Warhammer Orks and Brettonians. We glued them together, making a monstrous mess of things, slopped obscene amounts of green and flesh paint on them, then promptly forgot about them before we even attempted to play a game. I still have that ancient, ancient rulebook.... For about ten years after that Warhammer didn't even cross my mind. Then one day I noticed an old Sentinel model sitting on my friend's bookshelf, forgotten by all. That sparked a rapid downward spiral into the black hole we know as 40k.

When I was very young, I used to go out with my mum for late night shopping at the local shopping centre - there I would see every thursdays a group of guys in a FLGS having a hell of a time playing SOMETHING on top of tables I couldn't even see the top of - only the towering buildings of some citadel campaign could I see. I eventually got the courage to go in and poke around. One of the store owners there told me I was too young to play (I wish they would do this to some of the children now!) and instead "allowed" me to buy some epic cards. From there the interest grew into the idiot you see today.

The wizards of the coast store I played Magic that sold warhammer stuff, and most of the staff played, and they hosted warhammer games very week. They sold me on the 3rd ed starter box. And after reading the codex from cover to cover at least 4 times over the next week, I was never the same again.

well i started lord of the rings when i was 8 made a massive mordor and gondor army at 12 i stop lord of the rings and finally save some money

4 years later i'm talking to my friends about computers when they aren't even listening and are talking about some stuiped game called warhammer 40k i startt hanging with other friends and every time i go see what they are talking about it is 40k starting to get pissed i read some fluff and i starting hating the game and its concept even more

UNTIL i read some tyranids fluff and begin to love the army i buy a codex see the carnifex and tyrant and all the forgeworld creatures i have now been captured by GW theres no turning back now

as i get into the game more i find there is way more than massive men running around in massive blue armour and yeah now i'm diehard 40k wanting to make armies for most armies sadly my budget won't allow it

The first place that my ex-husband and I lived in together, we also had a roommate who was into 40k and WHF. He used to try and get us into the Fantasy games, since both me and Mr. Ex had strong RPG backgrounds, but I didn't care for the humans, and the Skaven coat color schemes were too limited. A couple of years later, Mr. Ex bought Assault on Black Reach at AggieCon so that we could play together, but we never did. After we broke up, Mr. Ex took the Marines and I took the Orks, and I started to learn to play.

I was at a gaming convention for some D&D action and happened upon a game of epic 40k that was getting ready to happen. I think at the time it was just called Space Marine. I was invited to play on one of the teams and really loved the game.

I later started playing D&D with a guy who had a nicely painted and converted SW army for 40k and thought it looked incredible. I started building SWs and Orks at the time. The centerpiece to my ork army was the old school battlewagon model. It was a complete nightmare to assemble but it looked good even through my crapppy paint job.

I've dabbled in BFG, Blood Bowl, played talisman, space hulk, had a couple WHF armies but, but I'm pretty much a 40k player only these days.
