I roll in groups except when it's dramatic and we have the time. At the Big Waaagh I once suffered 9 wounds on a lone aspiring champion against a seer council. As it was turn 4 [bottom] and we still had over an hour left, I rolled them 1 at a time, pausing for each to land on its end result before rolling the next. As luck would have it he actually DID pass all 9 armor saves [though I won't advocate that rolling individually actually makes a model roll better], and he went on to cause a wound and almost send the whole seer council running - something two charging noisemarine squads, a charging CSM squad, and a non-charging daemon prince had ALL failed to do the round before.
The only other time I recall doing it was when my eversor assassin made a sweeping advance into a squad of tau fire warriors in 3rd edition. They all rapid-fired, and scored 14 wounds. Only a 4+ save, and 2 wounds..... he failed his first save, then proceeded to save every single one until the last one, which finally killed him. Such moments sure are dramatic though, and my opponents have not protested in either event.
