I believe that 40k is just an "extension" on our timeline, i.e. in the future galactic expansion becomes reality, we finally meet aliens, etc.

Though how humanity becomes a bunch of religious nuts, how exactly did we create the warp through our actions, and why only in the year 40k does the tyranids show up and start face pwning everyone is beyond me. I believe part of the beauty of the lore is it makes as much sense while being illogical at the same time. You can't really go from point A, to B, to C in the warhammer galaxy, especially with all thats going on. Plus there doesn't really seem to be a "linear" progression at certain points, especially when you realize the typical SM lives for a few centuries.

BTW, there is no 'set' religeon or 'way of thinking' when it comes to the Emprah. In 'Faith and Fire' it is stressed the the Ecclesiarchy are trying to ensure that instead of taking over their religeons, the Emrpah merely falls into place with them.

For example, on some feral world the hunters believe that the Emprah is the 'night spirit' that watches over them while they hunt.

So some would indeed believe that the Emprah would exist since creation, and others would have differeing views. (Though nothing even close to the SM view that he was merely a man).

I don't have access to either my rulebook or Horus Heresy artbook to give exact page numbers for their timelines, but I hope these will suffice.

Dark Age of technology and human expansion begin before the fall

"As the Warp is becalmed, the Age of Strife ends, and the Great Crusade begins. The twenty Space Marine Legions, initially led only by the Emperor, erupt out of Terra and expand the Imperium "

Just for fun...to show when the Emperor was "born" by all the tribal shamans and nascent psykers of humanity ritually killing themselves and purposefully reincarnating into a single being. This tale is told more fully in the Horus Heresy artbook

Possibly because of the huge number of physkers who started shooting out of nowhere like lunch from a super-model.They could'nt control thier powers. At least they got burned to the stake or eaten by daemons.

My guess is the Atomic War that engulfed Terra before the Unification. The raw hatred and amount of suffering probably caused a large enough ripple to bring about more warp storms. When the Emperor unified Terra, he had greatly increased in power and the peace he brought probably extinguished them, along with a little bit of help from his wonderfully tasty brain.

That's not how it happened though. Human development and technological expansion proceeded unheeded from the Age of Terra through the Dark Age of Technology. THEN Warp storms (for the first time) isolate Terra and other holdings causing the Age of Strife. Humanity backslides and Terra becomes a barbarous place. Near the end of the Age of Strife the Emperor unites mankind. THEN Slaanesh is born, the warp storms cease, the Eye of Terror is born, and the Great Crusade begins.

This is how it is generally laid out on pages 122-123 of the rulebook and how it is more specifically laid out in the beginning pages of every Horus Heresy "Visions of..." book. Humanity and the Eldar likely shared the stars for a long portion of time. My guess is that the height of the Eldar empire, when they were getting to be their most decadent, caused the warp storms and the Age of Strife. When it finally culminated in the birth of Slaanesh millennia later the Eldar empire was gone and we were free to pick up the pieces.
