A newbie question:

Isn't BA just a SM army? I know enough to know that Space Wolves are very different in tone than the "regular" SM. But isn't BA just another 1 of your main SM types? I have always wondered why there had been so many SM books.

So basically Tau is looking grim? I just read somewhere they were making new Pathfinders and test models for new battlesuits that were shown in UK Gamesday 09? And all those new articles on the website.

Well, BA is also very different in tone from the Ultramarines.
In 3rd ed, all BA units had black rage enabling them to move D6'' prior to the game.
Moreover, BA has the famous Death Company that used to take on every unit in cc.

I think you need to look at SMs from a GW perspective. GW includes SM in every starter, and the sub-Codices of SM provide an "upgrade" path for people after they've finished AOBR and are looking for something a bit more flavored.

That is, the various SMs are specifically designed with minor differences:
- basic SM are 10-man Tactical Drop Pod Rapid-Firers
- DA have Terminator & Bikes as Troops
- BA have Jump Pack assault Troops.
- BT are Mech assault
- SW are specialist SM
- CSM are Mech assault and uber-specialist.

If you like particular special models or units, then that's really how you decide how to go forward.

Then, when you want to move away from SM entirely, GW has a whole series of Xenos and GEQs as the last step.

The dark eldars are one of the most useless races of 40k! I have not seen a singel dark eldar army in my entire life with my own eyes, and very few on the internet and whatnot.

Perhaps because they are so old and don't have good models?

I've seen more DE players than players of all of the following combined:

You can't spell 'slaughter' without 'laughter'.
By the time they scream... It's too late.

An ad for Jervis Johnson's army? Suddenly the Pan Fo doesn't look so bad...
