[OOC: Haha! Welcome to the story, love the pictures, I think we need more of them

Don't worry about time lines, just so long as you put in a rough time after initial outbreak we should be able to tell where you are in the overall sceme of things.

Given the level of chaos etc you are seeing, I would put it probably during the initial panic, so probably about 40-60 hours after the outbreak, before people really knew what was happening, but long enough for there to be fairly widespread civil unrest, and a fairly large number of zombies.

Feel free to disagree with this as much as you want ]

"The best nights sleep id ever had heheh what a weird notion the best nights sleep id had was on a hospital bed and I wasnt even sick.Since meeting John I have had a boost of optimism someone well not someone a lot of people are alive this hospital has god knows how many people spread out families, strays mainly women, children, orphans when I first got here I wandered the corridors and saw them their faces they looked drained tired terrified and with good reason what we have all been through over the last few days beggers belief.Johns space looked anarchic at best boxes strewn here and there a microscope set up in the corners various petrie dishes and samples had he been working on finding out how this virus ticked? perhaps? time will tell"

Dave got up from the hospital bed he'd been laying on and looked around at the darkened room boxes were stacked in either corner of the room various supplies from whatever forays that had been made into the city. He got up and walked over to the boxes and examined them many had CD written in a triangle (Civil Defence) others had various warehouse notifications others were from the medical depot and were medical supplies he wondered if their was any food but thought better of touching any of the boxes in fear of being thrown out of this temporary paradise... Paradise was a longshot more like Sanctuary.

he put his shirt back on and walked into the corridor looked up and down it some people were asleep others were awake and chatting amongst themselves as he walked by they acknowledged him he nodded back he went into Johns office to find him sat looking through a microscope. He looked up and smiled
"Good morning Dave" he said a warm tone in his voice "Morning John found anything?" replied Dave Johns brow furrowed at this question and he took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes "This Virus is like nothing I have seen I introduced it to some various tissue samples from the pathology lab downstairs 12 hours after introduction it grips every cell in a chronic case of narcrosis the cells break down and the Virus takes hold its scary in the way it works so fast on living tissue faster" he looked of glazed again "Its like nothing I have ever seen" he added
"So no cure" replied dave "No not even a decelerant works it just thinks it way round it and continues to exclusively attack cells it rots the body it kills everything useful and leaves the base functions and for some reason the function to feed but why the need to feed on the living?" added John Dave shrugged "You had any sleep John" Said Dave concern in his voice "Sporadic fitful you see I have this need to see how this works because if we can understand it we can prevent it" replied John matter of factly "If we can stop this we can stem the tide of corpses that are slowly outnumbering the living" "if only I had a specimen to study" added John
"Woah you can forget that where one of these things are dozens maybe hundreds are we cant risk it survival is what we need to be thinking about screw a cure get us to Canada we need someone to keep a eye on us health wise this that your doing John is detracting from the main goal getting to Canada and to the safe zone" replied John
"If I could get a sample I could get a cure and we wouldnt need to leave" said John sternly "Surely we should raise some sort of vote with the others....." John was cut off
"Not getting into it John no way" said Dave walking out of the room

Dave started to worry why was a cure so important to John surely they should leave that was the goal Canada and survival not staying here and waiting for that carpet of corpses to roll over them and getting a "Live" specimen he hadnt heard something so ludicrous. He ordered his day in his mind first they would go and look for signs of any more survivors then they would go foraging for supplies or rather he would he had a feeling they had only scratched the tip of the iceberg as to how far this thing went.

[OOC: I assume this is some time after we met? As it stood, I had not really rounded up any survivors at the 100 hour mark when we met, so I guess there is a gap of perhaps 24-48 hours there.

{EDIT: Ok, I have changed my mind a bit, I think that John may well have found a few survivors and have been using the trolley to shuttle supplies to them, so the time frame could be reduced to 12-24 hours if required, making it ~112-124 hours after outbreak)}

I guess the supplies could have been brought to the hospital before everything shut down completely, so that makes a kind of sense.

Anyway, some good ideas and direction so far. I might go back and write a middle section to fill the gap when I get home, got some good ideas.

Keep up the good work )

<OOC> Very nice. I will write a blip in a bit that puts my characters along with Gutter Ridge's Char infront / near the Hospital. Great outbreak pictures. Agreed good chapter end is the hospital. Look forward to that outbreak of stories within it. *Snap out of your writers block gutter ridge!* From what I have read of yours I am keeping him as a reluctant observer who is a info gatherer. So I think he finds the smallest details ie the master of those wheres waldo games. Good character

[OOC: I was not too fussed... I thought the hospital was on the relative outskirts of town though (almost in the suburbs). Certainly in previous sections, zombies have started to walk way from the hospital into the centre of town where the citizens are being evacuated by the army.

The university would probably make a good rally ground for that as there are lots of open spaces for helicopters, buildings for sheltering people, and probably walls to help keep out the zombies, although they would obviously be using the airport as well.]

OOC (Must write something so am going to write the next bit in Daves silent observations lol and info gathering trips where he found those maps. ) here we go!

"He called a meeting as soon as we broke up from the discussion we had it was his way of trying to get the moral high ground in the case of a cure. I of course looked at it as futile sure go out bag a corpse get it back to the Hospital and get bit on the way back no! it was ludicrous and stupid and fool hardy and I for one wasnt going to sugar coat it as something that would save mankind as a collective we needed to get moving I had a truck out front and there were APC's up the road and more canvas trucks. But John for some reason was hell bent on swaying the crowd to his findings"

"A cure is what we need to beat this thing back as soon as we start abandoning the cities we start abandoning civilisation" said John his voice risen over the din of dissent Dave walked forward and rose his arms
"Shut up! all of you too much noise and we wont need to find a corpse they will hammer the door down themselves" he turned to face John exasperated "No cure John we need to get moving Canada and Alaska are cold before I left Pittsburgh I heard on the radio that civilians were going there they think the virus wont survive there they think we should just go there wait it out wait for these things to starve then repatriate ourselves after.John looked blankly at Dave "And trapse across a wasted world when there is potentially a cure right under our nose's" he turned to the amassed crowd "We have food and supplies enough here it is fortified we can draw a line here send a message to them that we are not beaten get a cure fight back!" Dave shook his head "John how do you send a message to a dead man?..exactly? how do you fight back against thousands of corpses do you even hear what you are saying? Ian died I know but..
"Ian died because of these things I want to fight back I want to get a cure I dont want to keep on running if we run we will lose and if we keep running we will know nothing else our children will know nothing else generations after will know nothing else"! replied John heatedly
"Ex Excuse me" A woman put her hand up John and Dave looked at her and in unison gave the her the go ahead to talk
"I for one dont want to stay here she said this city is dead I feel unprotected and I am terrified" she gestured to the rest "We all want to go somewhere safe if he can lead us then I say we give him a chance" the rest of the crowd nodded and made their approval John walked away "For goodness sake" he said under his breath as he went

Dave looked at the crowd who turned to face him "I dont know if there is a safe haven in Canada Im only going on what the government said before they went off the air they also said about Alaska that the towns there were still going that Anchoridge was still going that the Russians had brought aid" The crowd started to talk amongst themselves excitedly hope was rekindled "are there Zombies there?" one man asked "Is the President alive?" another asked "Is there a refugee camp will that mean I can find my boyfriend?" another added Dave felt quite overwhelmed.

"Later that day I took a map of the city and a rifle and made my way out into the city here and there were a couple of corpses feeding on dead rotted corpses they shuffled in groups or sat lolling there heads from side to side I found a group in a car they sat there rocking backwards and forwards trying to get loose of the seatbelts and open the doors. It was if a surreal calm had decended I decided to make my way back to the FOB see if I could gather weapons and supplies for the journey ahead also see if the Government had left any maps and plans behind.I was rifling through one FOB when I made the most curious discovery"

Dave opened the corrigated iron door careful not to make too much noise the small hit him flies buzzed out he retched and put his sleeve up to his nose three Marines lay dead at a machine gun another at a desk his hands were over something a folder.Dave pushed the chair aside and the corpse dollied away into the shadows a small bump a groan and movement "gak" his second mistake he pulled out his pistol just as the Zombie shuffled around the corner one arm missing sinews sticking out Dave decided against a confrontation and grabbed the folder and sprinted out pushing the iron door shut behind him.He stuffed the folder into his back pack and made his way back supplies and this "Operation Wildfire" folder in his back pack.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

[OOC: I imagine that it is at the edge of the city, just before it breaks into the suburbs. I would imagine that we rounded up all the sick people we could find who had not been eaten and locked outselves into one of the secure wards (such as a paediatric ward, or intensive care) as well as anyone else who came by looking for aid.

I would imagine that John would have tried drafting a lot of people into caring for those who could not care for themselves. Dave would probably have drafted everyone else to look for supplies and guard the place.

There would be power, as hospitals have backups, but I imagine the whole city is probably powered by at least one nuclear station, so it could stay powered for a good long while (which is good ).

Some surviving army units might have fallen back to the hospital, but I do not think that has happened in the timeline as of yet (at about 120 hours after the outbreak, pending confirmation by Boss)

That is my take on the situation, but Boss may have other ideas]

OOC ( In relation to whats in and outside the hospital yes its on the outskirts past the last stand blockade erected by the Marines I mentioned yesterday before Dave met John in the hospital it is Dave,John 90-100 (Is that too much??) survivors and Dave being the only one that can wield a gun I should imagine John would be able to as well I should imagine there are also a couple of national guard and at least a squads worth of Marines with medic (If thats ok)

Plus that opens up possibilty for more characters to be explored.I also thing we need a summary of events soon broken down into hours of outbreak I shall leave that to Silver as he has the system buttoned down for Frenzied Potato your approach should be ok to the hospital some FOBs and a main blockade before the hospital at the moment the undead are scattered and sporadic in small groups the hospital is guarded by the national guard survivors as a small chalk with a marine sgt in command (again if thats ok for everyone)

For Silver the military is present but as I said a small 2 or 3 man National Guard and Marine squad level presence the rest bugged out or were decimated by the full zombie attack on the last stand blockade. With no chain of command they are starting to get mercenary about things the Marines are honourable but the 2 or 3 national guard being conscripts are starting to wonder what the point of staying true to their oaths is.

Current Hour 013:22 p.m.

"DON'T STOP JOHNSON!" Pushing as hard as he can the flatbed truck is moving at break neck speeds. Beat up and scratched to hell the grey truck roars towards a blockade.

Sarah continues to cry over Craig laying with his head on her lap unflinching. Mike is mainting a kneeling position firing short controlled bursts into the frey behind him. They are a few blocks back. The ruckus has caused a gathering. The overcast skies begin a small drizzle of rain. The driving conditions begin to turn for the worst as bodies and blood start to cause the truck to fishtail.

Mike turns his head back and stares down towards the blockade realizing soon they must bail. Three more shots ring out as he braces himself for the wild ride. He has a belt tied from the a notch in the side of the truck bed around his waist.

A warning siren rings out from the remaining marines...

<OOC> And no I did not think this would be the big tie in. I have a "plan." It just involves some back and forth from creative people

Dave ran into the lobby and pounded out to the barricade.

"Whats going on?" he asked the National guardsmen Private Beck as he remembered
"Some dudes charging the blockade in some beat up truck hes mental he gonna crash it the ruckus is going to attract those deadheads we're going to be up to our necks in those things" he said over the whip crack of m16 shots
"Lockie you still got the Javelin?" he yelled into his comms bead "Take that son of a bitch out before he kills us all" he ordered
Dave looked accusingly "Your going to fire a missile at them?" "Hell yeah Dawg" Beck replied giggling soon his shoulders were clamped by a bigger man and he was forced up against the iron barricade "Private what the hell in Jesus H Christ are you doing those are civvies out there we are going to save them get your boys on the line now get Lockie to open the gates" the bigger man a Colonel looks at Dave "Stop standing there and start looking useful your with me! you can handle a gun then heres a vest we're going dead head hunting."

Sgt Beildekker was a career soldier seen action in Iraq,Afghanistan before that Kosovo and Desert Shield/Storm plus black op's in numerous places he figured that this was going to be a walk in the park babysitting civilians and making sure sick people dont go anywhere their not meant to quarantine duty in war school it was dressed up as the easiest assignment going....How mistaken he was

The group of two marines Bieldekker and Dave went outside the perimeter dave struggled with the M16 and wished for his pistol the truck was careening towards the barricade. The M60 in the dugout roared to life mowing down undead in droves Beildekker and Dave added to the fire before the truck sped by and skidded to a halt in the perimeter. The Marines and Dave fell back by numbers well the marines Dave just sprinted Bieldekker noted that some of the civvies needed rudamentary training the National Guardsmen needed his boot up their asses "Honestly a Javelin what reckless donkey-caves" he thought to himself he was a vocal critic of weekend warriors many recruited on rehabilitation programs as ex crims.

"Out of the truck cowboy" roared Beck aiming his M16 at the truck
"Out of the way donkey-cave" said Beildekker pushing Beck out the way "This is sgt Beildekker is anyone hurt? do you need assistance?"
The truck door opened and a kid steps out a middle aged man jumps out off the flatbed shotgun in hand Beck pipped up again "Gun down donkey-cave yea put it down" he ordered
Beildekker looked at Beck who shrunk away he had to do a double take but he swore he knew the man with the shotty out of the truck also emerged a scruffy looking lad and a young girl oh 10 years old by the looks of it
"Im Sgt Bieldekker 8th Marine Corps you guys need assistance?"

OOC (Bieldekker is a soldier a warrior the reason he is still a sgt is because he refused promotion the old Kirk to Picard edict "dont let them promote you ship you out to sit behind a desk" he liked the thrill of command up front and personal he has served in Iraq and Afghanistan and the 4 other marines are members of his squad he took out to Iraq and fought alongside in the 1st and 2nd battles of fallujah"

"Mike McKaney thanks for not shwacking us." With a quick salute he helps Johnson out of the truck and carries his son Craig out with Sarah in tow.

"My son was attacked several hours ago. He is alive. Tell me you have a surviving doctor."

John quick to act wastes no time in beckoning him to an area, "Dave should take a look at him."

"Great lead on."

Johnson takes his first relifed breath in what seemed like a lifetime. Mike helps craig onto a makeshift opporating table with what orderlies Dave could muster. As he looks down he realises what is in front of him.

Dave spends a moment to realize what is in front of him. "Opportunity or danger?"

While Dave begins life saving treatments / precautions. John Stands beside Mike and his Daughter along with Colonel Beildekker.

"Are you ok soldier?" Sgt. Bieldekker says.

"I'm ok Colonel, but my boy is the concern." Mike catches his breath and relaxes his grip on Sarah's hand but she clinches to her fathers leg.

"Lt.Colonel Mike McKaney Rangers 3rd battalion retired."

"Is there still a nurse in this hospital by the name of Angela McKaney?"

<OOC> Put in his twenty years and got out of it to spend it with the family that he believed suffered as he served. Beildekker paused for a moment "Lt.Colonel Mike McKaney you say?"
Mike nodded "Sgt Benjamin Bieldekker I served alongside your unit in 1991 Desert Storm I heard about your unit and i am sorry for all your losse's I assume this is why you retired loss to the service sir" he added saluting
"As for a nurse by the name of Angela" he looks at John he shakes his head "Noone by the name of Angela Mckaney here I'll check the lists and the FOB board to see if she left for the Echo Safe Haven" he added
Mike nodded "Sgt Bieldekker we can catch up soon I need you to help my son was attacked outside" he replied worried stricken look in his eyes John walked over "What attacked your son? was it one of them?" saked John anxiously
Mike looked around his eyes wide frantic he then brought up his shotgun "I wont let you kill him he was bitten right bitten by one of them"
Beck swung round "What the feth dawg you let a bit one in" he started to walk over to where Craig led unholstering his sidearm
"Stand down Private" roared Beildekker
"With all due respect feth you sir he is bit and he is gonna die and he is going to get up so feth ya'all" he added cocking his pistol and aiming down at Craigs writhing form
"You are out of line soldier I am giving you to three before I take your ass down 1..2.." A shot rang out and Beck went down hard Mike had shot him with his shotgun Lockie pivoted the M60 around "LOCKIE STAND THE feth DOWN!" roared Bieldekker "RIGHT NOW!" the other Marines had Lockies position clocked
Lockie put his hands in the air and backed away from the M60 "Doc whats your oppinion?" asked Bieldekker "Can you save him or at least make him comfortable?"
John nodded but inside he was enthralled by the event a perfect way to start his research another oppertunity to watch the Virus to cure it to delay it or to eradicate it inside John smiled Dave Glared at him
"Lets get him inside my lab" yelled John Bieldekker walked over to Mike "Hes your boy but sir you should have shown more control Ive lost a man for the line now sure Beck was an donkey-cave but I needed him neither the less"
"Im..sorry" was all Mike could say Dave walked over to Beildekker
"Sgt can I have a word?" Bieldekkers brow furrowed "of course.

Dave beckoned Bieldekker to one side
"Im worried about Dr Shaws intentions in this matter he has been..." Dave paused and looked for the words
"Spit it out not got all the time in the world son" replied Bieldekker "Im worried that Dr Wade wants to use the Mckaney boy as a test subject"
"Test subject I wasnt present at the meeting but I assume this is about that damned cure that Shaw is convinced he can engineer" "Crock of gak in my oppinion" he added "Bottom line do you think the Mckaney boy poses a threat?"
"He was bitten you know that but Dr Wade is swearing everyone to secrecy you know it cant be stopped the Virus so why are we letting Dr Wade do this?" said Dave "Its dangerous we should be planning on getting on the road you saw the amount of Zombies that followed them in"
"I agree the compound is in danger of being compromised hows that plan coming along by the way I have sent Lockie and Ford out to get intel on the other FOBS and Barricades see how many intact veihicles we have and then to get them here Im hoping they have found a Chinook out there god we need it"
"The plan is going fine I have reviewed the Radio signals no joy nothings out there but it clearly states Echo is up north" said Dave
"between Canada and Alaska if not in Alaska" added Bieldekker
"I assume thats all I will go and see Dr Wade later this evening" Bieldekker added "Try to make him see sense"
"One more thing" said Dave
"And that is son"? replied Bieldekker "When I looked around the Forward post west of here I retrieved a folder Im going to be frank what do you know of Wildfire a Operation Wildfire? added Dave
"Not a lot" said bieldekker
They looked at each other for a long time before Dave nodded "Dr Wade your gonna see him right?"
"I will get round to it" replied Bieldekker
Bieldekker watched Dave walk out of the FOB then opened a locker on the wall a identical folder was produced
"Wildfire what does he know" Bieldekker said to himself brow furrowed.

OOC (am going to do a Flashback for Bieldekker and the marines in a mo to flesh out their background in respects to the outbreak and where they are in the early hours.)

The tour of Afghanistan had been hell fighting intense with the Taliban Bieldekker sat in the C130 with his Platoon the rest of his men were laughing and joking talking and being Jovial he smiled these were his boys each and everyone like a son.
"Sarge want in the pool is quite big now" said a member of his squad
"Nah nah this old man needs some sleep" he replied waving his hand he made himself comfortable and tried to shut his eyes as he did he noticed something out of the corner of his eye. A couple of his men bunched round the radio set.He got up and stormed over
"What the hell..."
"Sarge something is happening" said the Marine monitoring the radio "the military channels are alive with chatter" he paused "Something about civil unrest we're being diverted to Denver "
Bieldekker walked to the cockpit "are we being diverted?"
"Affirmative Denver apparently we need to supervise the evacuation of civilians they say that there is some civil unrest everything is going to hell down there". replied the pilot
Bieldekker nodded and moved to the back of the aircraft in the cargo bay "Suit up we land in twenty full combat load theres something going down in Denver and we need to help secure the city we will have APC's and Humvee's waiting plus we're linking up with the 10th Guard its pretty hairy down there so be prepared for anything".
The C130 came in to land the ramp came down as soon as it taxied the scene that greeted them was pandemonium several fences had been erected and civilians were being herded through to Medics in full outbreak gear each was being checked for something beyond them Denver was burning a top brass general and a man in a suit came over to greet him.
"Sgt Bieldekker sir" he saluted the general saluted back
"Sgt as you can guess we have a situation 12 hours ago something happened. In something we mean several districts and precincts not only here but up and down the continental United States reported instances of Civil Unrest. replied the general the man in the suit held back suitcase in hand the General gestured for the case.
"In here is your orders we are working with all forces airforce, army, guard, navy also Comsat Norad and the missile command" added the general "open the case when you have set up your FOB".
"And where would that be exactly?" .asked Bieldekker
"Denver General Hospital you are to set up dig in and get as many uninfected out as you can" said the General
"Infected so this is NBC? why arent we suited up?" replied Bieldekker sternly "Because its not airbourne" and that its been theorised that this is a possible selective Bio attack". the general added "You have your Orders Sgt"
"And missile command I assume they have been brought in should the situation be lost"
The general looked back over his shoulder "Yes as a last resort" Bieldekker walked out and shouldered his M16 and walked over to his unit they all loitered around checking kit and equpitment "Sgt on deck" barked his corporal the squad snapped to attention "At ease" ordered Bieldekker
"We're going to Denver need to hold and defend apparently its a Bio attack started 12 hrs ago Command is reviewing all options including possible other's should the situation be total Fubar we sit pretty get as many uninfected out and hold the line should the crazies come a knocking now suit up!"
his Corporal nodded "Suit up transport by squad A Squad APC B Squad Truck"
Just as Bieldekker boarded a Bradley he noticed a commotion a young lady blood pouring from a bite or wound on her leg was being led away by Marines.Bieldekker shook his head "Hell of a 6 months" he then closed the hatch and the lights went red.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

[OOC: I am just posting this so people know what I am going to be doing, I will edit my actual story into this post in a second.

I am going to do a bit of story of how Dave and John got to the situation they were in in the hospital, then I will read what everyone else has done, then I may post some continuation. My spreadsheet is on my other computer, which I may or may not be bothered to go and turn on and upload, so who knows

*gets on with writing*]

++ 100 hours, hospital car park ++

"Do you have any plans, or do you want to join me in gathering up some essentials and holing up until we know what we are supposed to be doing?" asked John.

"I don't know, what do we have to work with here? Is it worth staying put?"

John thought for a moment. "Well, we have backup generators, so even if the power station goes offline, we should have power longer than anywhere else, plus we have a small solar collector as well. We have lots of meds, and quite a lot of food and there are a couple of secure wards we could block up and be pretty safe in. Best of all, there is all sorts of lab equipment so we can start looking into what this infection is and how it works, and possibly even how to stop it."

Dave looked skeptical "You mean we might be able to stop all this?"

"Well, maybe, but it is certainly worth a try. Plus there must be other survivors in the hospital. Some of the wards are closed wards, so there will be people in there who need medical care... we can't just leave them there."

Dave thought on it for a while "What do you suggest we do?"

John smiled, realising that Dave was coming round to his way of thinking "I suggest we clear one of the secure wards, make sure there are no zombies or infected in there, then head for one of the security stations... the hospital is full of cameras and we will be able to see everything. We can search for survivors. But we can also speak to them... there is a hospial wide intercom system, so we can guide them to the security station, or even direct to the ward we choose, making sure they avoid any zombies!"

Dave looked impressed "We can really do that?"

"Of course, then we can look for supplies, and guide the search teams past any zombies too."

They stood looking at each other for a moment before Dave slowly nodded his head "Well, we can certainly give it a go, if nothing else... let me just get my things from the truck."

++ ~105 hours after outbreak, secure ward ++

It had taken almost 4 hours to guide the survivors through the maze of corridors to the secure ward above the path lab, but now there were over 30 of them together. Granted some of them were bed ridden and could hardly move and there were a number of children, but there were a number of fairly able bodied people too, as well as a nurse and a security guard who had stayed behind to protect the children on the paediatric ward despite the orders from the Department of Health to evacuate.

Dave looked slightly disapointed there were so many critically ill patients and relatively few healthy adults, but John seemed happy that they had been able to save so many. "Every one we save is one less corpse or zombie." he said to Dave when he quietly voiced his concern.

"Yes, but every one is another mouth to feed too... and some of these people need urgent medical care." stated Dave, looking round the ward.

"True, we will have our work cut out for us, but there is plenty of food and more than enough medicine. We can all take it in turns guarding the doors and nursing the patients. Nurse Turner and I will teach everyone some basic first aid so that we can concentrate on the more difficult care, don't worry. We should be fine if we pull together. Plus with the path lab right next door, I should be able to at least start to figure out what this thing is. Why don't you get some rest? There is a spare bed near the back there... you must be exhausted."

Dave had to admit that he was pretty tired, even though he was probably too full of the horrors he had seen to sleep. "Well, if those are the doctors orders, I guess I had better try and get some sleep."

John smiled and ushered him off to bed.

++ ~115 hours after outbreak, path lab, just after Dave had come in and spoken to him ++

John was slightly worried by what Dave had said... he seemed more concerned with getting to some imagined safety in Canada than staying in a proven safe location with plenty of food, water, medicine and electricity... not to mention advanced scientific tehnology with which to learn about and hopefully find a way to combat the virus which was now sweeping the globe, not just the USA (according to the radio anyway).

John's back and neck cracked as he stretched. How long had he been staring at these slides? 6 hours? 7? And still little closer to finding out what this thing was.

It seemed to do something to any human tissue he had introduced it to (the few lab animals he had injected had died almost instantaneously but had not risen... it seemed they suffered more from a hyper-advanced allergic reaction, rather than any direct damage caused by the virus)... It seemed to kill the cell, yet somehow alter it, allowing it to function almost under minimal power... muscle cells could still contract, nerves could still fire, but their energy expenditure was minute, virtually zero. He had run a few calculations too, given how long it took the virus to spread through the tissue samples he was using and his own experiences "in the field", he had determined that any tissue directly contacted by the virus was almost immediately altered. He had worked out that it would take about 12 hours for the virus to work it's way though enough of the tissues of the body to cause enough "Altered Necrosis" (as he had termed it) to result in bodily death.

One of the most disturbing discoveries was what the virus did to brain and nerve tissue. It seemed to utterly corrupt them, forming masses and tumors, the function of which John was not quite sure of, but he suspected it may well result some how in the reanimation of the host organism.

If only he could get some more samples, or even a relatively intact reanimated corpse, it could provide so much more information than a few vials of infected tissue... Although very dangerous, a "live" specimin might be even more valuable.

Couldn't Dave see this?

++ ~120 hours, hospital ++

Several groups of soldiers and civillians were found walking through the hospital on one of our trips to the security station. They were guided to the stronghold and checked for infection. Our number now stands at 46 people.

3 of the soldiers drove here in an APC, which is parked outside the main entrance. It's arrival attracted quite a large following of Zombies, but after we had remained hidden for a while, they were obviously attracted back towards the city by something, possibly the gunfire that can occasionally be heard in the distance.

++ ~122 hours, meeting of the hospital survivors ++

The meeting descended into chaos, with people asking question after question that Dave could not hope to answer. He raised his hands to call for quiet "I don't know the answers to your questions, all I know is what I have told you... people on the radio were suggesting heading north is a good idea... they think that the cold weather will slow the zombies down, perhaps even kill them outright. All I know is that the longer we stay here, the more difficult it will be to move on, and the more chance there is of being caught by those things."

There were a few nodding heads at this suggestion, but then John started to speak "And how do these people know what will happen to these creatures in the cold? Have they tested this wild theory? I doubt it. Any temperatures cold enough to stop one will be cold enough to kill a human too. In fact, since a human needs to stay warm to survive, these things can probably last longer than any of us could."

"The only way to know where is safe is to examine these things, find their strengths, their weaknesses. Perhaps even find some way of inhibiting or destroying the virus to stop it spreading and to destroy those who are already infected. The only way we are going to be able to do that is to stay here! Here we have all the equipment we need to look at this disease and find out how to beat it! It may not be ideal, but we have a far better chance of doing it here and now than we will do traipsing through some frozen Canadian forrest, with no food, no shelter and no medicine."

"And what about those too ill to travel? Do we just leave them here? They will not last more than a few hours outside the hospital, certainly not being jolted around on the roads. That is another thing, you all saw how the zombies were attracted to the noise of the APC... what are we going to be able to do about that? We will need to stop for fuel, supplies, even rest... every zombie for miles will be able to hear us and will be heading right for us."

The group looked undecided now, wanting to do something, yet wanting to stay safe as well...

[OOC: Ok, how is that?

*goes to read everyone elses stuff*]

Made in us
Longtime Dakkanaut

The unfolding story of Cpl. Jones
Timeline: Zday +1 Day
Location: Denver International Airport

Denver City was like something out of a bad horror movie. A steady stream of dirty, panicked refugees of all ages soon was upon us. We barely had enough time for the engineers to secure and set up an outer cordon around the section of the Airport that we were using before they hit us in force. My unit was ordered to help man the main gate and help process the thousands of people looking for help.

The main entrance was made up of two layers of defence. The outer layer was made up of grey dirt filled jersey barriers that the army had been using for years overseas in the middle east to much success with razor wire running along the length of it along the top. The second layer of defence was the Airports Chain link fence that was reinforced with razor wire.

A sandbag funnel was made to help guide people in and around them to slow people down and prevent them from being able to run or drive something straight through the checkpoint. An old red and rusty shipping connex was pushed up here surrounded with more sandbags and had a improvised bunker sitting on top of it. Various spotlights and a loudspeaker could be seen coming from the bunker, along with a pair of Ma Deuce (.50cal) heavy machine guns which were aimed down at the crowd of already panicked civilians.

At this point it was our job to separate people from anything that they might be trying to take with them. Suitcases, backpacks, your life's positiions whatever. It was all discarded into a pile a little ways off and burned. From here they were forced into one of two paths both lined with chain link fence and patrolled by armed guards. One path lead off to the left and went over to the C.A.S.H (Combat Army Surgical Hospital) for further/closer examination.

The other path was where we sent anyone that showed signs of being infection or bite marks. This path lead off to an area that had thick camo netting over the fence so that people couldn't see what was going on on the other side. Thick black smoke with grey ash that occasionally fell from it was constantly coming from behind the fence. If anyone stuck around for awhile, they would have noticed that only Military personal emerged from the backside of this area or the JP8 fuel tanker which sat parked on the backside of it. We made sure however that nobody loitered around long enough to notice such things.

Once people made it to the CASH, they were sent one at a time under armed guard into one of the many tents that were set up. Here they were stripped of all clothing and examined more in depth for signs of infection. If given a clear bill of health, they were given an orange jumpsuit to put on (Since there old clothes were burned to prevent contamination) and they were sent to holding areas to await a flight via C130 to one of the military safe zones.

If they were not cleared by the CASH for whatever reason, they were taken away to the closed off section never to be seen again.

END OF PART 1

(OT)
(have to split this one into 2 parts due to the fact that I don't have much time at the moment to write this, will finish this one up in a few hours after I get back from my trip to town)

On the road into Denver the curbs were choked with Civilians people making their way to the airports walking cycling whatever they could do to get away from whatever the hell was going on down in the city below above the sound of helicopters could be heard the occasional scream as well what the hell was going on and why here.

"Sir" said one Marine
"Yea Rummy" said Bieldekker
"I have family a cousin a aunt I was wondering...." "You can keep on wondering" Bieldekker cut him off "That goes for the rest of you Denver is now a quarantined city the same goes for New York,Washington,Pittsburgh,Miami,Viginina, new info fresh from the top you have family in these cities they are now quarantined we have a job to do and we are going to do it!"
He took one last look round the cabin and sat down
He had his own worries his wife and kids were in Pittsburgh the the regiment home Pittsburgh was now a madhouse he would catch up on what was happening soon as he was done here and get home see his wife see his kids
"We're here" unload
"Ok hit it" roared Bieldekker the ramp rolled down and they filed out in the street were burning cars a crowd of paniked civilians pushing on a police cordon the marines fanned out and took up positions reinforcing the cordon around the hospital a police officer came up to Bieldekker "The next words I want out of your mouth is how many and how much time we have?" asked Bieldekker in a stern tone
The cop cleared his throat and composed himself "Their down there somewhere the ones who are infected we sent in 3 SWAT teams thousands of infected went over them like a carpet. We are holding them but they'll be here soon the civilians the mayor gave us orders through the comissioner to hold them here the hospital is overrun ive been hearing things from in there"
"What things?" asked Bieldekker eyebrow raised
"Now this will sound stupid possibly mad but they say the dead are getting up and attacking people" replied the cop he picked up his radio and started talking then he moved on.
"Rummy we need a cordon set it up 50 cal there and there a M60 there back up the bradley swing her round and park it here train the guns down the street killzone 15 to 20 metres out deflade fire from those two windows Tip and Rei are with us arent they?. I want them in the windows lets lock it down"
the Marines ran about and enacted his orders he made his way towards the command centre the marines and National guard in there saluted "Bieldekker I presume" came a pompous voice from the command bunker "Leitman 10th National Guard battalion Captain pleasure to have your boys here to reinforce us" he offered his hand Bieldekker looked down and moved on.
"Your in position? ready yes should the worst happen?" asked Bieldekker "We've been here for 15 bloody hours we're ready" guffawed Leitman
"Ok we'll see" said Bieldekker
Truth is he hated the National Guard weekend warriors not pure bred trained fighters he served with some in Iraq cant fault Army cant fault Marines and Rangers fething fantasic but Guard sure have an issue with orders most of them in his oppnion were ex cons and school drop outs and preppy spolit School Boys being taught disapline so they can feth around for a year then join dad on the corporate board.
Gunfire and screams outside signalled the start Bieldekker cocked his rifle and headed out Leitman stood fixed to the spot "Not coming captain?" Bieldekker asked the Captain shook his head "fething typical" said Bieldekker as he headed out.

OOC (Silver amazing as always I think we should ramp up Dave and Johns conflict with the arrival of Craig Mckaney (The live subject) John is going to get a visit from Bieldekker (With unexpected results) and we have the arc with possible travel to deal with the first act nears its closure the second will then begin soon I want everyone to start thinking beyond the hospital and of Techseer and Wildfire as the Zombies are not the only danger out there.

We need more flashbacks as well possibly of John before this all kicked off and one for Mike Mckaney during Desert Storm fleshing out the relationship between him and Bieldekker. just life things to show their lives before this event. things are going to turn on their heads very soon... mwahahahahaahahaha)

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

[OOC: I take it that the hospital was defended in the earlier part of the conflict by the guard, marines and police?

I guess they pulled out when my character was asleep

Does that mean they retired somewhere, to return to the hospital later when the rest of the city fell?

Anyway, good stories. Really enjoying how everyone is running into each other, though I really think we need some times putting onto each one, so we know what order they come in, as it is quite confusing at the moment ]

OOC (Shall we compile the events so as we know what order their in??

And yea the general hospital where you worked was defended by the 8th and the 10th Guard and Marine Corps. Being out of it you may never have known until the perimeter was breached and all hell broke loose.

And what of Corporal Jones??

But a story for another time ... Now for continuation

Another grenade went off and Bieldekker rammed another clip home it was chaos a melee of civilians Soldiers and god knows what the guard were pretty much destroyed one poor unfortunate was dragged around his arm half on half off beildekker put one round in him and one in whoever was attacking him the whatever it was strugged off the round and carried on.

"This is bieldekker sitrep anyone?" Screams rang out over the comms
He got up and ran for the second defence line and leapt over a sandbag a afro Carribean guardsman and 3 marines manned the dug out another big Guardsman sat at a 50 calibre
"This has gone to gak aint it!" smiled the Black Guardsman Bieldekker paid him no attention he just started to reorganise the shambled remains of what was 120 men "Anyone who is left rally on the hospital I repeat rally on the hospital! lay down fire short bursts retreat by squads back to the hospital" he roared the radio went dead "Why havent we got air support? what kind of cockamele op is this?" he cursed
the big guy on the 50 cal opened up halving one infected and spalttering two others he turned and smiled under his combat stripes pearly whites rang out "Thats Lockie he loves this gak he loves a war woooooo!!" said the Black Guardsman firing as he fell back the other 3 Marines fell back with them. They got to the entrance he threw a look over his shoulder bloodied civilians were led all over the place doctors tending to them in the courtyard on the lawn was a chopper people in suits were loading up he broke off and ran over
"That chopper what the hell are you doing with it"! he was ignored black fatigued men in gasmasks with guns ushered the suits on board.
"Dont fething ignore me!" he roared "What are you doing with this chopper soldier?" one of the men broke off he got a good look at the uniform black spec ops fatigues a patch on the shoulder had a Eye eqyptian looking the man said two words "feth off" he shoved bieldekker
they then closed up and took off Bieldekker was thrown about by the downdraft he heard a scream Leitman stumbled out held onto by three or four infected they sank their teeth into his head and his neck he fell shaking as they started to tear him apart. Bieldekker ran back to the men frantically firing from the door
"Barricade this door and fall back" said Bieldekker the doors were locked shut the moaning from the outside and the moaning from the inside merged into one "Lock this area off no telling how many are inside" he ordered the black soldier and the big man stood there idlely the Marines went straight to it. Bieldekker walked over to the guardsmen "Problem?" he asked "Nah just figured world is going to gak im the one with the gun" he looked desirably at his rifle "As long as you wear that uniform your a soldier and you will obey a senior officer now get to it!" barked bieldekker "alright" said the Black soldier walking off and gesturing to Lockie "Name" roared Bieldekker " Private Beck Syrus Beck dawg remember it I aint saying it again" he snapped as he walked off Bieldekker called his Marines too him.
"The situation is Fubar I wont be surprised if they launch something at us soon I want these people moved to the basement if they do I want to be down deep down depending on yield id say it will tear this city apart" he said gravely even he had gone white
His radio guy pipped up "Sir command on the line" Bieldekker gestured for him to pass it over
"Bieldekker go" he breathed deep expecting it to be an notification for retreat of all uncompromised forces and for him to hanker down as a B2 was in the air.
"Understood" he replaced the radio set
"We're to stay here await further orders dig in and redress our position".He added
"Here cant they see its Fubar they want us to hold what a hospital foyer this is gak bs! replied his Marine
"Yea we stay we hold and we redress the position await help and reinforcements fortify and hanker down also gather intel on the behaviour and spread of the Virus also command wants me to find someone a Dr Wade specialist in bio mechanics and Viral pathogenics last intel put him here" replied bieldekker
"feth more babysitting 24 hours ago we were ending a tour of duty for this gak" added Rummy
"We go where we go now shut up ladies sew em up we're here we're here when we find Wade we get to go you guys copy?"
They nodded their agreement "Ok lets do it"
