Sleep deprivation training while in the Army, 5 days is far too long to go without any sleep, plus the trees kept jumping in front of my humvee!! Also I kept seeing things that I knew were really not there. Good times

Around the 5 day mark (give or take a few hours).
Like the above posters state, it gets weird and non-functional.

I've gone 72+ hours several times in my youth with accompanying side effects, but not these days. My insomnia is a blessing and a curse and I usually average 4-6 hours of sleep /day/week.

Every once in a while I just can't shut down and go 24-48 hours with no sleep and then "catch up" with a 10-hour isolation sleep binge.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

hmmm...
should around 94 hours, during a military exercise...
worst I ever did.... I remember that on day 3 a buddy of mine that walked in front of me on the road, suddenly walked down in the ditch and the up again. When I asked him why he did that, he responded: "I had to, didnt you see the dead cow lying in the road."....
Just an example what can happen to the human brain when you lack sleep for a long time.

Had to go to the hospital after 7 day, just couldn't sleep. Doctor called it sleep depravity because of chemical imbalance. I am on medication for it but still do 24 hours awake and about 10-14 asleep. Let me tell you, your body is a freakin wreck after the fifth day, nothing functions as it should in the head. I walked outside to pee because it seemed logical and at the seventh day I tried to fall unconscious by slamming my head into the wall. Didn't work but I got a scar between the brows from it... =p

I won't bother.

Military. Not fun. Wouldn't suggest it. Potentially dangerous, nothing seemed real that fourth day and a live round made it into the armory and was discharged (not by me) during clearing (thankfully up in the ceiling). Bad day, that one. Caffeine and the occasional 20 minute cat-nap only go so far past the second night. It was weird though. Strangely we would be energetic as hell for hours and then zombies. Back and forth but the fourth day was all zombie.

Once heard that a presidential candidate was going on a 3-day campaign blitz years ago, and determined in my youthful enthusiasm that I would "psychic battle" with him by staying awake for the entire 3 days.

Ran out of steam shortly before the 72 hour mark and had an emotional let down. Didn't realize how much energy I was using just coping with the stuff I was dealing with as a teenager.

But yeah, a good night's sleep and I was all better.

I used to skip a night's sleep all the time when I was younger, just to stay up doing something fun. I'd usually do something physical like walk or run at about 5/6 am if I had to go anywhere, as I found that helped pump me up enough to stay awake through school/work whatever.

I'd much rather go a night entirely without sleep than have my sleep interrupted, though. I used to live on a very noisy corner, and would only get about 2 hours at t a time, before being awakened. Weeks where I was getting a total of 4-5 hours a night with interruptions started to make me very, very grumpy.

My friend gets about 8 hrs of sleep a week.

When we were on school camp the other week, he was up both nights just sitting there. I'd wave to him to see if he was awake and he would wave back.

He is as tired as hell during the school week.

I remember there was a story on TV about a guy in the 50's(?) he was a radiohost, and wanted to get some publicity for the radiostation, so he announced he was going to set the Guinness Book of World Records record for longest time stayed awake. He got to a week or 5 days, I can't remember it might have been longer, but it broke him, he was asleep while he was awake, and it broke him, he divorced his wife, was fired from his job, because it had made him a different person, bitter and stuff.

72+. Was in college, working 30 hours a week, running 50 miles a week, and taking a ridiculous enginerring overload. Stayed up for two nights straight, and realized I had so much left to do that I had another couple coming. Went to the gas station at 5 am, got a bottle of mini-thins, read the label, it said do not exceed 6 tabs in 24 hours, I said cool and washed 6 down with a 1 liter mountain dew. Collapsed in a heap after somewhere just over 2 days later, and have never been the same. It takes so much to motivate me to lose sleep like that anymore that it just doesn't happen much.

60 is my best. I used to be able to stay up for 4+ days at a time when i was in high school. Then I figured that if i sleep I can't get yelled at by the numerous people in my life.

Almost exactly 72 hours is my longest consecutive waking period. I just wanted to see what it did to me. Had a little bit of hallucination at around the 50 hour mark, but it subsided after about 5 hours. Nothing special. I just had to focus on reference points on the wall to make sure my sleeping roommate wasn't rapidly vibrating and occasionally check my neighbor's door to make sure they weren't dropping furniture. I could have gone past the 72 hour mark but, at that point, it was 8 or 9am on a Sunday and all my friends were passed out. I figured I should crash then and recover for Monday.

I've done plenty of weeks with only one or two nights' worth of sleep and I've pulled plenty of all-nighters. I find that if you have even the slightest degree of regularity to your sleep schedule, your normal waking hours are easier to stay awake during. It makes perfect sense. If you're pulling an all-nighter, once you get over that tiring hump and into the next day, it gets easier. Plenty of all-night study sessions have left me dead to the world, more or less, but once I've taken that morning test, I don't go to sleep until the following night. Just don't feel the need.

Ah, college life.

76 hours. I don't know how or why, but I had places to go and things to do, and absolutely no time to sleep.

Basically sleepless flight to asia ( im terrified of height ) , by the time off the plane thats like 24 hours of no sleep already .
Then transfer at Naritta airport , 8 more hours of me running around looking at shops.

Then 4 more hours of flight i believe +2 hour take off/ land / customs and such.

Reaching the destination its usually again , in the morning . atleast 14 more hours of staying awake ...

that adds up to.... wow 52 hours.

My relatives used to call me a battery because i almost only seem to run , that and i fall asleep while standing up .

During the early phase of Tsunami Relief operations in 2004, I spent somewhere between 3-4 days working before I was relieved. With 10 hours to sleep until my next shift, I quickly went to bed, and had a dream that someone came, woke me up, and told me to get back to the site. So I went back to the site, and started working again, until I was found by my SNCO who told me to get the hell to bed.

When work invades your sleep you are truley misserable.
