Having worked in Video game marketing for years, I can tell you that MMORPG's are a very strange genre. There is very little 'expansion' to be seen, and mostly just 'shifting'. Meaning, there are a set group of players, as other people have mentioned here before, and that group tends to 'move between' games. Usually, when a new 'hot' game comes out people will flock over too if for a month or two. Some will stay with it, most will move on to whatever the newer game is. The odd thing here is, most of these people have a WoW account, and don't delete it. So, they continue to pay money to WoW while they're trying out new games, and will then go back to WoW when they are bored, or when a new expansion for that comes out. It is really quite interesting to see exactly how people react to certain games.
I'm still on the fence as to how this game will actually be, I wasn't overly impressed withe the fantasy one, and I don't know what to expect really from THQ for a MMO game, but I'll definately give it a try, just because i love 40K!!!

This MMO will fail or suck, just like every other WoW-clone.
At least until that rotting carcass of WoW eventually kills itself.
disclaimer: I played WoW for a year and a half raiding from MC to TK/SSC, and have tried other MMOs.

And here is the other reason I hate threads about this game popping up so often. Did you not bother to read any post I have made thus far? This game is not being developed to be anything near to WoW, yet everybody that has touched WoW seems to think that any MMO that starts development is going to be a clone of WoW.
Have you bothered to notice that when the Warhammer Fantasy MMO was slated for release that Blizzard waited until the week before it's release date to toss out a content patch which contained the majority of features Warhammer had come up with to make it stand apart from WoW?
To hate WoW so much you sure don't come off like it.

Yup, I made a thread about this months ago. But at least now there is more released about it then when I first heard. Still, hope its a cool game, because that would be a blast to play. Ive also always thought that DOW2 was merely a platform to "test" out some things

That's what ends up happening, because that's how the business model works. You kill X of Y creatures and Z piece of generic looking loot plus some experience, repeat ad nauseum. You shell out some money every month, get your shiny new thing and that little sensation in the back of your mind that says "DO IT AGAIN, I HAVE THINGS!". All of this is topped off with the social experience.
You don't want to end up like WoW? Don't make an MMO or be so brilliantly revolutionary (which I highly doubt a couple guys from NCSoft are going to be able to pull off) so WoW can't just copy you by adding one freaking zone (That Was Easy™) and have wallets deeper than WoW so you can compete via attrition.
Have you bothered to notice that when the Warhammer Fantasy MMO was slated for release that Blizzard waited until the week before it's release date to toss out a content patch which contained the majority of features Warhammer had come up with to make it stand apart from WoW?
If by "content patch" you mean "major expansion"... which yes, did add some extended PvP but it also added a lot of what WoW is good at: PvE and appealing to the masses. What did WAR have? Lag and bugs, something every fresh MMO suffers from.
But you know what's funny? WAR (today) has a hilariously pathetic userbase of <500 000 users. Even stuff like Halo 3 on LIVE crushes that daily, with the added embarassment of almost doubling the number of users. This means that they have failed to compete in their market being a whopping 5% of the userbase of WoW. WoW also started out fresh and new five years ago and had to compete with Lineage I and II, both from NCSoft. But WoW slowly dominated because it was doing something right and is still doing it right. If NCSoft couldn't compete with them then I very highly doubt their new company can, because they don't have the money or experience that Blizzard does.
Most naysayers claim that it will be "not a thing like WoW" or will be a "WoW killer" but they're all going to hell for lying Everyone who is "different" than WoW is really just "WoW with X or Y but worse". Remember Tabula Rasa? OH THIS IS NOT WoW AT ALL GUYS, IT'S AN MMOFPS AND IT WILL KILL WoW LOL. It was a scifi MMO with shooty elements and now it seems to have been shut down...
The only way WoW will die is if the very hand of god descents onto this mortal plain and helps the devs making the next MMO or WoW simply implodes on itself. The thought that this will be "different" is noble, but filled with peril and disappointment. I'll have to see it to believe it, but as it stands this game will end up costing a lot of money only to fill a very small niche.
EDIT: To clarify, I do hate WoW, but I hate MMOs in general because, in the end, they're always just an elaborate IM program with terrible gameplay stapled onto it... that you have to pay for.
Do you honestly think that the CEO of THQ isn't thinking "maybe if I fund this I can be like Blizzard and get a free cashcow!"?

Maybe a few years ago I would have agreed with that statement. However, with so many MMO's failing, the word is in, "MMOs =/= auto $$$" Not to mention the outlay of cash up front to get it going and... you have a large hurdle to think about.

the only problem with tabula rasa is the fact that its very hard to make a sci-fi mmo from scratch.
wow is set in fantasy and had games that helped set it up(warcraft1,2,3).
40k online will also have had games to help it along(dawn of war series, 40k spacemarine, 40k, squad command).
you cant compare a game that was ridiculously hyped up and isnt even an mmo (halo 3)and console games already have a larger amount of people to play so they aren't comparable.

No, I said content patch, which is where the majority of the content they copied from WAR came from, the expansion was two months after that. Never did I say 40k would kill WoW. WoW will not die until it becomes unfriendly to players, as opposed to now, where it is the most player friendly MMO available.
It's also foolish to compare an FPS console game's player base to a PC based MMOs player base, they don't attract the same sort of fanbase. This argument wouldn't have even happened had you not brought your hatred of MMOs to this thread, it's really just asking for an argument to happen.
Please take the negative attitude out of the thread, otherwise it's just gonna get locked, which means the entire thread is pointless.

.. as a WAR player, I sort of resent the implications, but it's true, we have a small player base. Personally, I enjoy WAR (I mean, come on, it's one thing to see a bone giant on a gaming table, it's another when it's six stories tall and bearing down on YOU...)
HolyCause, I might point out that, weirdly enough, the second most successful MMO is EvE Online, which has the LEAST friendly gaming experience... the GMs largly refuse to help the players, and greifing is damn near the point of the ENTIRE GAME. (take this from someone that flies a mothership and has killed over 100b isk worth of player ships...)
Oh, and you can lose your equipment at the drop of a hat, and even if caught in a game bug and killed, you probably won't get your stuff back in a petition.
So, tell me of this theory of yours again?
