Hopefully this doesn't fall on its face before the release date. A 40k MMO done well would be awesome.

Well, the big coolness with an MMO is that you have a steady income stream, rather than a one off burst of profit. That is why everyone wants to do it.

It could totally work - I see it being a bit like the Star Wars one, but with 40k fluff, obviously...

You know it will be a race between Starcraft and 40k.

But I have a feeling Blizzard will end up with the upper hand.

I disagree strongly. This one is Vigil's to lose. The sheer amount of background collateral and fanatical fanbase that they already have will even the playing field. As long as the UI doesn't suck, the visuals are less cartoony than WoW, and the fans are given the ability to assist in object and world design (which could work wonders on a limited budget), Vigil could easily beat Blizzard.

But 2012... well, a lot of innovation could happen before then. I'd rather see Vigil/GW release a limited product earlier and expand a lot than lose the race while they sit on top of their material and polish it.

Go back a few years and you would have said

Hmmm it is me or since Everquest was so succesful everything is trying to get its own MMO.

And what the next guy said is quite correct. An MMO delivers a regular monthly income stream from subscriptions, as long as it is successful.

Unfortunately, as might have been expected but wasn't, there is only a finite population who want to play MMORPG type games, so the pickings are slimmer than a lot of companies thought. And once you get stuck into one game, you don't have the time for any others.

No, it is not going to be like WoW, it's going to be much different than other MMOs that are available. You would be better off googling this than looking around here, it seems every time this is brought up that it becomes a bunch of wishlisting and Blizzard/GW bashing. Actually, here is some information, since it seems like I'm one of the very few Dakka members keep track of this

I happen to work at a MMORPG studio where many of us have a great passion for 40k...we've got a tournament going on now, game tables...but I digress.

I flew down to THQ way back in Novemberish 2005 (I think) and pitched for a 40k MMORPG. They decided against going with us and went instead with Vigil (who had previously worked for NCSoft).

Oddly, we went on to pick up another sci-fi IP which most of you know, but that's another story.

I hope the 40k game comes out and is awesome. I'm a huge 40k fanboy and would like nothing better than a good MMORPG. But it's tough to make one and even tougher to make a good one.

Has anyone been following the game "Borderlands"? More or less an online FPS/RPG that friends can play through together. I think this kind of game would be great for a 40k game, with the host being a squad sarge and the other players who connect being tac marines.

Level up, buy new wargear etc. DRIIIIVE A RHINO!

I'm just bringing this up because I don't think a 40k MMO could ever be pulled off correctly. 90% of players will go ultramarines with the rest of the population being orks and whatever else is left over. Stupid futuristic demographics..

Darksiders seems pretty interesting, and I am really intruiged to see what Joe Madureira comes up with on the design side for 40K concerning the region of space they pick.
Can't wait if I'm honest, its the one game that could really break me out of WoW and even my wife has said she would happily PvP in a 40K MMO as it is such an awesome setting. So Style of game matters not.

Hoping for at least three factions myself, Orks need to be on their own and able to bash on everyone.

Theres already a small but growing (small due to fact there is virtually no info yet) forum for the game over at www.warhammer40konline.net which is attempting to pool as much info as possible as it becomes available.

I had been under the impression this was going to be squad oriented... kinda like DOWII but where you have just one squad.

No one knows, the info so far is pretty limited, the only key comments of note from Vigil themselves being 'it will be a MMORPG, not a FPS, but guns will feature heavily' and 'All races important to the 40K universe will be there' which could blinkin mean anything.

Tbh After some chats elsewhere I am of the opinion that we won't see anything new info wise until after Darksiders is launched in Jan.

I think it would be cool if it was based on a war sign-up system where-by they set wars between races and you go to a specific place on your ship to sign up and fight (and level up) in the war with each war having it's own quests, also i think it would be funny seeing how the armory system would work ( i'm imagining an ork fight pit for each level ork (like ork boyz, nobz etc. etc.) and the best stuff goes to the best people (based on skill not luck).

I would be perfectly happy with a game that plays like WAR, except in 40k. Have me run as a Guardsman Sarge or Commisar... and have a squad of Guardsman pets for me to control. On the other hand, I think if you took DoW2 and ramped up the graphics you could play that game from 1st person and it would be a damn awesome MMO. Especially with the way the mechanics are done now, you could probably build an MMO directly off DoW2 and people would be perfectly satisifed.

I'll keep that in mind.

Considering the amount of interaction between studios and communities has increased of the years, it would be great to have a point person to dole out approved info to generate interest.

Actually there's much more info out there than what you think, Vigil has said much more than 'it will be a MMORPG, not a FPS, but guns will feature heavily'. They've went as far to say that character creation will be more in-depth than any current MMO, right down to tons of purity seals and skulls (which I'm starting to think is somewhere in everyone's GW contracts). They've also stated that the combat system will be different from all other MMOs, mentioning that it will rely heavily on cover and out-flanking maneuvers, much to the tune of Gears of War. I think the main reason I wish this thread would stop popping up is because I'm getting sick of making this same post over and over...maybe I should just save it to a notepad file and start doing copy paste...

As far as concrete info goes, probably late next year is when you'll be hearing things, Darksiders was supposed to drop last month and got pushed back to January, that means all the focus is on it right now.

Ah, its been a while since I read the interview, the main things that stuck in my mind where the two things I noted as most folks seem to think its going to be fps.

Cheers for that.

...World or Warcraft has been out for quite a while now, and MMOs aren't exactly a new thing. Personally, I'm surprised it's taken GW this long to put one out. Unfortunately, I can pretty much guarantee there won't be a true Space Wolf faction
