Triple boot FTW! XP, OSX, and Ubuntu bitches!

XP for games, OSX for productivity, and Unbunto for nothing because it's useless but its fun to say you have? Standard faire. I dual boot vista and OSX, I'll probably end up installing win7 to decrease the OS footprint on my game partition, though they don't have mac drivers for it yet, and I'll eat a phonebook before I attempt a reverse hackingtosh.

When I was still at school Linux was for losers. The biggest loser in our class was ace at Linux, too bad his expertise was of no use to us. All he ever did was nag, nag, nag about "using the wrong typeset" that normal computers could read but not his Linux box. UGH.

For now my Win7 is temporary. New laptop for Xmas will of course have Win7 on it and guess what? I'll be using the win7 disks to put win7 on my desktop so either way I will have win7.

I read an article somewhere that some M$ exec himself admits vista was fail. I like it but apparently 90% of the community did not. Win7 though has gotten nothing but rave reviews and positives.

Don't let Vista judge your decision. Win7 is what Vista should have been. Vista was a system raper and to this day the 64bit version still has compatibility issues with hardware. As it stands right now Win7 has less hardware issues upon it's final release as of a week ago (some OEM's got theirs early, so did the M$ launch parties) than Vista to this day.

Of course, per usual, if you have hardware that is pre-Vista from a more unusual vendor check the website to make sure it's compatible. Only thing of mine that is not compatible yet is my 3yo laser from Hp but that get's drivers next month according to the HP website. So I think I'll end up reinstalling XP until then just so I can print.

Vista's failure is absolutely going to be a part of my decision! If one company makes a product that is gak and then makes a second product and people are saying, this is what that first product should have been, it doesn't exactly instill confidence.

If it helps Cnet compared Win7 to Snow Leopard, and even though snow leopard edged it out by like .2 (out of a scale of 5) any previous windows operating system would have been blown away. Cnets generally pretty good about review scores. Microsoft dropped the bs with this version and actually produced something useable and innovative.

I agree with Ozzy. Microsoft should be giving everybody free upgrades to 7 in apology for releasing Vista.

But now they want to charge me again so I can have what Vista should have been? I think not sir!

Then enjoy your decade old operating system with poor memory and multicore support? That is unless you switch over to osx or the like, in which case, good on ya.

Yeah, sad fact of life. If you want to keep up with hardware at some point in time you need to upgrade the OS.

Granted, 64bit XP supports multi-core and over 3G RAM but I'd bet performance wise comps running Win7 x64 with all bells and whistles will outperform comps with the exact same hardware running WinXP x64.

Not saying go and buy Win7 today but I'd seriously consider it within the next 6 months. Too many people I know would rather spend $600 on a video card to gain %10 performance increase in games over their old card but scoff at paying $200 for the latest OS which might (with exception of Vista) increase OVERALL performance by double that.

Going from 30fps to 50fps in Crysis is nice but going up 20% when doing ANYTHING Windows related is nicer.

No brothers! Fight the Great Satan!

The only way to for consumers to truly show their displeasure with a company is not to buy their product. You're perpetuating the Microsoft monopoly!

You don't defeat monopolies by avoiding their products. If it's actually a monopoly that should be near physically impossible for any sort of necessary good.

Shame M$ isn't a monopoly as everytime M$ tries to do something the gov't sticks it's nose in.

If you don't like M$ than don't buy their products but not all consumers of M$ products dislike said products. I get hours of entertainment from my 360 and IMO Windows is loads better than Mac. If someone gave me the latest Mac I'd trade it for a PC, or failing that, use it to prop open my tool shed door on windy days.

Without the fact that this is a windows 7 thread, and I posted a video talking about the BK Windows 7 burger madness... you MAY, have had an actual point.

I built my current rig just so I could be semi-modern for once. It ran XP better than any computer I used before. I received a free copy of Vista SP1 because of (not) attending an IT seminar on Windows One Care. I installed it on the same machine but on a different hard drive (same model though). Seemed to run as well as as XP did. I liked most of the major changes except it is does too much metafile work trying to copy stuff, so it is slower copying files than it should be. I used both of the Beta and RC of Windows 7. I got the RTM as part of my TechNet account in August, much better than Vista but still has the stupid metafile copying issue. Sadly, I finally deleted the drive that had XP on it to make the current Win7 install, so I can't compare them using the same machine. I am using 64 bit so I miss out on some of the old 16 bit & DOS stuff I used to run, but everything else works as well or better than it did with XP.

I always did fresh installs for Vista and all 3 versions of Win7. My roommates did inplace upgrades from Vista to Win7. So far, none of us have had any issues or problems with Windows 7.

Spurious argument at best. What are you trying to achieve that takes "twenty lines of gak code" that can be accomplished by double clicking in windows? I'll bet you I can do the same thing double clicking on linux.

BrookM wrote:When I was still at school Linux was for losers. The biggest loser in our class was ace at Linux, too bad his expertise was of no use to us. All he ever did was nag, nag, nag about "using the wrong typeset" that normal computers could read but not his Linux box. UGH.

Again what "expertiese" did you need? Just more sound and noise.

I don't know if the situation is improved with later versions of windows, but with linux I can get from bare metal to full blown development environment right from the install, while with windows you have to install the os, hunt down drivers, pay $$$$ for a version of visual studio that has all of the capabilities I need. Never mind the fact that windows isn't anywhere near posix compliant, you can't rebuild it to optimize for your rig, can't fix broken modules, had weak user permissions (supposedly better in newer versions). Sure you can run games and Office, but for real computing I'll take something unix based any day of the week.
