I disagree; animals usually kill because they feel it will benefit them and their bloodline. Humans usually kill because they think they'll benefit in some way as well, even if it's illogical to think so.
Using Sociopaths as an example doesn't make much sense. There are disorders that cause animals to attack without reason too.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I am not sure how you could go about doing something like that, especially given the fact that most if not all of the bystanders were not adults. I seriously hope that the adult they mentioned, gets a ridiculous amount of time in jail; but even then, it seems like the guy would just be getting what he wanted either way.
True. The fact that word spread enough that kids were leaving the dance to go and watch though raises some red flags.
Namely--Where the hell were the adults who shoulda been supervising the dance?
Now, I was in high school a decent bit ago--but still, at all those dances had multiple adults there, along with a cop presence patrolling. Add in all the adults having walkies tuned to the same channel...
Something like that NEVER would have happened, simply due to the fact that the adults would have caught on to the kids doing something.
So what the hell was going on, supervision wise in this case?
Latest news has the total as high as 10...ranging in age from 15 to 23. A 3rd suspect was arrested, a 21yr old.
As many as 24 people are suspected to have watched and taken pics and done nothing.
Ugh.

If they are over 14 they could be tried as adults in most states, even in the horrorshow that is California justice.
I bystander didn't have to stop it, but a bystander did have the duty to call the cops.
As someone who has been there done that and has a bit of nerve damage, you do something.

WOW! That is awful, how can someone just watch that? I'd have gone into berzerk/righteous fury mode, and at least distracted them with beating my ass. Call the cops or at the very least yell HEY! in a assertive voice. I hope the people who did this, become some convict's wife.
Every teenager on earth has a cellphone. There should have been dozens of calls. there should have been people running back to the gym to get the cops there.

That's what I can't understand.
Why on Earth would people just stand around and watch? I doubt I would want to throw myself in single-handed, but making a phone call to the police doesn't sound too hard to do.
BTW the installation of security cameras may make things worse. It psychologically reduces people's sense of their own responsibility for what goes on because they think the authorities will be on to it due to the cameras.
Frazzled wrote:Every teenager on earth has a cellphone. There should have been dozens of calls. there should have been people running back to the gym to get the cops there.
To play devil's advocate here are some possible reasons why the bystander effect and diffusion of responsibility happened:
1. The kids flat out hated that girl
2. The minors were likely drunk or doing gak that their parents/cops would screw 'em over for
3. The minors were drunk
4. The bystanders were friends or affiliates with the gang
5. Aforementioned bystander effect and diffusion of responsibility
Doesn't really justify anything but imo you really also can't expect much from drunken minors who are already breaking the law; especially when it comes to report another crime taking place where they'd be subject to police interrogations and likely be arrested themselves that night.

I dont, cause I lost it but otherwise I would.
In a situation like this, you have to be crazy to go over there and try and stop them. But finding a phone, pay phone or using a mates mobile is easy. Even If I was drunk, I would call the police. Who gives a gak if your caught drunk when something like that is happening.

I'd bet good money there a gang involvement here somewhere.

Yeah, with the perps in age from 15-low 20's. The 19yo was a FORMER student of that school.
Unless he's into preteen girls I only see one reason for guys in their 20's to be hanging out with minors near a school.
Though the way the article is worded some of the people that started as bystanders joined in helping to beat her and rob her and rape her so it doesn't seem as if all males who raped her were part of the initial "group".
She was airlifted in critical condition. I think it's safe to say that had someone not taking initiative to call the cops those 7 men would be facing manslaughter charges and maybe even possibly murder in the 3rd. She took a hell of a beating to damn near die from it.

The only appropriate punishment would, of course, be for those who stood there and watched and those who participated to be: first, gang raped for two hours straight (eye for an eye), second, have their genitals severed and shoved into their mouths, third, have their stomachs split open and entrails pulled out so they can slowly die and feel that weird ghostly feeling you get whenever something is moving around inside your abdominal cavity.

I know. I am 100% positive no judge would decide this is an appropriate punishment. I, however, after watching all 3 seasons of Dexter (and happen to know several large homosexuals with anger issues, don't ask...) am fairly certain that my ninja skills are capable of pulling such a feat off. Not the raping of course, I do draw the line somewhere, but the angry sailors however....
