Yes, I was disappointed by the appearance of a blatant sales item in there, but it hasn't been a regular occurence in my eyes.

Now stop distracting me you lot, I've got an essay to write.

Yep. Agreed.

But the "blatant sales" don't appear until Thursday/Fridayish on the most part. They HAVE been showing a lot of personal staff projects, they HAVE been doing looks at gamer submitted armies, studio scenery projects, etc.

Just skip the last two days of the week or subscribe to their twitter feed and see what it'll be before you visit the site. It's not hard.

Then why bother doing it? (Not a dig at you.)

It's much better to under-promise and over-deliver.

GW have all the rest of their website, WD and all their shops to advertise stuff in. Just one page, once a week, surely could be managed by a £125 million company which is supposedly rooted in creativity and imagination in fluff and models.

Plenty of ordinary guys do that and more on their blogs in their spare time.

Once again the question arises, "WTF do all the studio do all day?" They've supposedly got dozens of sculptors, artists, writers and so on banging away making fantastic new stuff. How come they can't find one pic and 500 words once a week to stick on "What's New"?

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Maybe this is how they are under-promising and over-delivering.

If you don't like it don't buy it. You are of course free to label me a GW fanboi, but seriously, it's the the only good piece of advice the fanbois give out.

Yep agreed on the dont buy it thing. The ONLY way GW will listen to what is wanted is if everyone stopped buying from them. Once their profits go down and they can't up prices or downsize more to compensate then they'll have a rethink.
Small aside, can't be easy running a company, developing rules systems and so on can it? You got to meet costs, that I agree on. You got to make a living so profits split between investing in developing more stuff and wages, yep again, good. It's when they say they care about the hobby, customers blah blah blah and all they do is advertise instead of actually doing hobby stuff like they claim to I draw the line.
Frankly the hobby parts of the army sections are very poor, and a not so subtle advertisement of what bits from those armies they want you buying. Even their painting guides have a link to buy all the colours featured. Useful to some, again a take IMO having sales in the middle of a "hobby" section.
If only they would split website and store again.

Do it with Reaper. They're minis are beautiful, and the prepainted plastics look pretty good as well. Course, it'll cost quite a bit.

I'm already not buying it, so telling me to stop buying it over and over again is just going to piss me off more. If that's honestly the best advice you've got then please keep it to yourself.

No it's not. It's incongruous.

"I don't like the blatant advertising under the guise of 'helpful advice' - they should stop!"
"If you don't like it don't buy it."

See how that doesn't track at all?

It's like... getting angry at the Sci-Fi channel (or SyFy... *facepalm*) ruining episodes of television shows by placing key details and spoilers in their advertisements, and getting "If you don't like it don't watch it" as a response. It's ludicrous.

"I wish SyFy would stop giving away the endings in their ads."
"Well if you don't like the show, stop watching it!"

I just ignored that part and assumed he was talking about their products, but yeah, good point.

I love the GW website. It's the easiest way to find out how much money you are saving by not buying products from Australia.

I am switching from being an GW apologist on this issue to being mildly annoyed about their efforts this week. Aside from the appearance of Jan's handywork, it's been a bit dry on "What's New Today?". I consoled myself with the thought that lots of cool Skaven articles would apear on Friday and then...

...all the lazy bastards could manage was to tell us that some Brand New Skaven are being released tomorrow (well, duh!). Those awaiting Skaven tactica will have to wait until next week Bet the first article they do is an insult your intelligence guide to putting together Clanrats. These annoy me no end, particularly with Fantasy miniatures, when they could show you how to address the issue of ranking up with each kit, but restrict themselves to suggesting that you glue a head onto the torso and perhaps some arms would look good too.

Grr...

What bothers me about GW's marketing strategies is that they're so blatantly manipulative. "Here's what you should buy to go with Planetstrike1" What a coincidence, it's the new SPAYSS MERREENZ stuff. "Look at this cool new Codex." Huh, that forces me to buy a whole new army. Funny that. "Look, a new boxset!" Pretty much the same, but more expensive! Wow!
As H.B.M.C said, it would be easier to accept if they were at least honest. Or if they respected us enough to be subtle. But when they try such obvious cons it insults my intelligence.

Sorry, that was off topic really.
On topic: I haven't really had a good look at What's New, but I'm actually quite happy that they're at least trying. So long as the advertising doesn't take over too much, I can enjpoy it for what it is - at least it's still better than White Dwarf. But I don't think I'll go there often. There's much better hobby content elsewhere.
